MPH Posted 4 September 2007 Posted 4 September 2007 The new guy wasn't in the squad. Shame really, was looking forward to seeing him. which new guy!? ferreira or umm.. mr denmark? i'll get the hang of his name eventually- just woke up so in no rush to look his name up either but i think officially the loan deals window doesnt open until saturday so 'officially' he wont be a leicester player until then- which could be why info of his signing had disapeared from the main website....
Flynny Posted 4 September 2007 Posted 4 September 2007 Another win which is always pleasing! Nice to hear some say Kaebi did well in forward positions. To be honest, we have far too many right-backs and Newton hasn't impressed at RM so Kaebi would be ideal as a RM until he toughens up a bit and gets used to English football. I know he gets ripped apart on here by many but the underlying fact is Matty Fryatt scored again. I know on the face of it goals seem simple if they are penos or 8 yard taps in but the fact that he is there to do it says plenty about what proper strikers do. I'm not too sure what he has to do to get ahead of Cort and MDV though. I'm no statistician but he has scored more goals in pre-season than anyone else and continues to score for the reserves (4 in 2??) as well but still he doesn't get enough game time. I hope he comes good because yes he at times doesnt give the right ball or make the correct decision but he is a goal scorer with decent pace who gives defenders a headache by running at them. Campbell's got two in the league and he looks and sounds a bit crap so far.
Manwell Pablo Posted 4 September 2007 Posted 4 September 2007 Campbell's got two in the league and he looks and sounds a bit crap so far. Campbell has looked deeply unimpressive so far considering the amount we paid for him as I said he would, but as long as he's scoreing goals we can't really complain.
Ultra Posted 4 September 2007 Posted 4 September 2007 i thought kaebi was amazing. Looks like he could play anywhere. Seemed to cover every blade of grass although he made a poor back pass in which fell to a lincoln player and they should of scored. Did a lovely cruyff turn in the first half which for me made up for the mistake. Also Hellings had a lovely strike on goal in the first half and Lincoln should have had a penalty in the first half. Cant remember who made the challenge. My attention was distracted ala weso's missus. Not a perv. Honest. Hehe Careful. Daggers might be reading this. If so, expect all kinds of wild accusations to head in your direction!
Geo V Posted 4 September 2007 Posted 4 September 2007 Campbell's got two in the league and he looks and sounds a bit crap so far. I agree. He hasn't been that impressive but as long as he continues that strike-rate we`ll all be happy. Good old Jug eared Gaz Lineker was a bit shite as well at times but developed to be a good finisher but IMO had a disastrous touch and ran with his head down to often. We wouldn't mind the Deejster to be as half as valuable as he was thats for sure! I`d still like to see Fryatt playing in our current side instead of MDVs. I`m sure he`ll play much better with better players around him.

If you want anyone in our side instead of MDV it should be Carl Cort. a 100% fit Cort would be a excellent target man at this level, and there are signs that he's getting there.
Ric Flair Posted 4 September 2007 Posted 4 September 2007 Campbell has looked deeply unimpressive so far considering the amount we paid for him as I said he would, but as long as he's scoreing goals we can't really complain. Agreed. I was hoping he'd prove me wrong, but he's living up to everything I said he would. He'd frustrate but chip in with a few goals. What surprises me the most is how un-fit he looks though, I always thought his strengths were his pace and in your face style of play ala Dickov. He doesn't look as quick as he did at Brentford or Birmingham. I'm hoping that he regains that turn of pace about him, because without it, he looks shite.

Im sure Cort will be good if he gets near his best but he isn't the one who is scoring gaols in pre-season and the reserves. Thats the point I am making. Most people who have impressed a little seem to have got a chance. Kenton was mentioned as being outstanding in one game and then he played at Forest. MDV dropped some weight and performed well in pre-season and he too got his chance. I am merely asking what MF will have to do or who has he upset at the club which makes him 5th choice striker?! Also DavieG, I would play Hume at right mid and DJ with Fryatt up front just to see how they work with the other players. Im far from saying it is bound to work or coming out with an absurd remark about any guaranteed outcome with them in the side but am saying that we now have a better GK, more solid defence, quality central midfield and maybe a quality wide player in Ferreira. I`m just interested to see how good MF would be in a good team not that pile of shite we had on display for a lot of last season.

I`m sure he`ll play much better with better players around him. Fryatt's never going to be a Lineker or anything like. And he can't complain about the players he's had around him. They don't slow him up, make him easily shouldered off the ball, or fail to get his head up. They don't make him unable to head the ball or unable to shoot much from distance. Fryatt has scored two general play goals in his last two reserves matches and he even had perhaps his best effort narrowly disallowed for offside last night but several people I spoke to who were there were not convinced he would do any better in the Championship than he's done before because he's not consistently fast enough or strong enoguh to make his assets tell at that level. No-one has ever contested that Fryatt scores goals to a certain level. But beyond that he looks suspect and it is only the fact that we're hardly shining in the striker department that his name is being mentioned again now. Reference has also been made to Cort but the reserves looked awful lumping the ball up to him at Telford although it was good to see him playing again. Frankly I'd want to know what the problem is with our strikers before I shipped any out. Cos I don't know if its the strikers or a lack of close and numerical support that's the problem. I would fill the side with potential scorers/creators and then make up my mind. We're bound to stutter with so little creativity in so many places as Mandaric has clearly realised. But I'm damned if I'd have us in retreat against the likes of Accrington, Nottingham Forest and Plymouth and if that meant bringing in new strikers, new wingers and a new creative midfield player so be it. However, I'd first see what a proper team of the guys we've got played like first. Because I don't think they're playing anything like as well as they should.

No offence, but i`d prefer to listen to the judgment of the Wolves manager and scouts who decided to pay £1.5m for Freddie Eastwood when the likes of us paid £2.1m for DJ. I`d also back there judgment having snapped up Keogh from S****horpe for £850k and Michael Kightly from non-league club Grays. They have seen enough talent in Matty Fryatt to table a bid and they would hope to get the best out of him. Also, your point that Matty Fryatt wouldnt stand a chance at playing better if he was surrounded by a better class of player is ridiculous and just proves to me that you`ll say anything to prove your point as lets face it, you havent rated him and would prefer the likes of Dodds to play ahead of him. Any idiot can see that a player stands a far better chance of performing to a higher standard if he has better quality service, more options and other players around him to take the pressure off of him. MF and Hume had far too much on their shoulders last season as we had useless wingers and midfielders apart from maybe Weso who was and still is maturing. Hume responded well, MF didnt and started picking up all these little injuries and looked far from fit. If we can give MDV the chance after two years away, why cant we have the same level of belief with MF?

And from what I can gather Wolves swiftly backed off from Fryatt once they'd signed their other targets and certainly didn't seemkeen to lift their valuation. On top of that Wolves managers and scouts have hardly distinguished themselves over the last 50 years judging by their achievements. As for Matty getting "chances" he's had lots and will doubtless get a place on the bench Saturday which is fine by me. I hope he does well but he'll need more than one performance to convince me he can be a 15-goals-plus per season striker in the Championship.

I wasnt talking about the last 50 years, just recent history for Wolves. Its strange to say but not too many of our players seem to have been subject to what can be described as relatively big bids. Our Club Captain was offered a contract and sold when he refused but that still only brought in £650k and most think that was about £500k too much . MF was reportedly subject of a 900k bid and thats for a player who had a shocker last time around. The point I am making is that people who know how to judge a player can see enough in MF to know that with a bit of luck he can be a very good player. You don't get that with many of the others we have. BTW it just shows how bad our squad was last season when we can only attract these paultry bids for our players. I remember 20 odd years ago when I picked up the Merc to read that Pleat I think turned down £750k for Ally Mauchlen who was fuming as it was from his boyhood club Rangers! I would like to say we have come along way but we hadn't last season and if it wasn't for MM, we would be talking of £200k transfers and not £2m ones like we have seen this season.

The someone who chose to bid £900,000 for Matty Fryatt based on his form of last season was a braver man with his money than I'd be. No-one can judge the wisdom of any bid that doesn't materialise but even given a generous budget, its not the sort of sum I'd have risked on the lad. I'd only rate him as a worthwhile option first team wise, so perhaps £0.5m tops. The lunacy of past times when journeymen strikers like Ade Akinbiyi fetched over £5m only shows the poor judgement of far too many football people when given too much of someone else's money, rather than how admirable they were and I've no reason to believe the levels of judgement have improved considering some who've turned up here in recent years. I'm not sure it's easier having a big budget anyway. As a dealer for over 20 years I've always done better when I've had to watch the pennies than when I was flushed. Good footballers can still be found cheaply if you are prepared to spend time and effort getting a particular task out of them and if you can give them the confidence in themselves to reach heights they never imagined. Ready made players are invariably expensive and if you can't inspire them it won't make any difference what you've paid. They'll almost certainly be disappointing over any length of time.

I agree that there are hidden gems out there but if your scouting system is up the swanny you have little chance. Wolves didn't seem to have a big budget BTW compared to other clubs. They spent there money wisely and dealed a bit like selling McIndoe and getting Jarvis in, getting Cort off the wage bill and bringing in Eastwood to compete with Keogh, Bothroyd and there other new signing, Stephen Elliot. As for Ades £5m fee, its easy to judge that after the event but at the time it seemed like a decent gamble. Managers today continue to spend silly money on the likes of Chopra, Nugent, Kenwyne Jones amongst others because there is a real problem in the UK to find quality young strikers. I'm not classing MF with these guys, especially the first two who have scored regularly at this level but you can see why people might be interested in a striker who scored a few for Walsall`s successful side and then did OK for us but at times has shown enough for fans like me to think he is worth hanging on to.

You're in good company on that - and as an option I can't see a problem. But to possibly get the best out of Fryatt, if his pace will allow it, you've got to have people who can deliver the sort of precision pass that King fed him for his disallowed goal against Lincoln and wingers/midfielders who can pass the ball low or precisely into the box. He's not a natural header of the ball so almost anything in the air is a waste.

The other day you said it shouldn't make a difference who is playing alongside him but today you suggest that he needs players to pass the ball low to him or with more quality in the box to see the best of him! Thats what I have been saying! I think he deserves the chance to play alongside this new look team which has much better quality players amongst it and a bit of confidence. If MF manages to feel part of that system then I feel we will see the best of him but at the very least, with the goalscoring form he has produced in pre-season and the reserves, I think he deserves a chance.
Bareknucklefoxer. Posted 5 September 2007 Posted 5 September 2007 Good Evening. I don't post on here a lot, however I do read and enjoy the site. Thrac.. I believe I seen you at the Hinkley ground for the reserves game against the Imps. Just wanted to say that I enjoyed the evening as it was my first time going to the Marston Stadium to watch the reserves. A couple of things before I get onto the game itself, firstly, I thought it was really good to see the young first team players there as well as DeVries and the new guy Deziri(sp) showing support for their fellow pros. I thought the game itself was pretty much disjointed, I'm putting this down to Kaebi and Maybury (He's never a right midfielder!) and to be honest Kaebi didn't look like a right back, don't get me wrong he has a great centre of gravity and uses his eys and feet well to jink the ball about, I think he'd be a good right winger or wingback, he did like to have a little run at players and turn them quickly with his first touch, and also he did make a couple of nice interceptions in the first half. First impressions were very good, just gotta stick Chambers right back with Kaebi in front of him, them overlapping will be a strong part of our side in theory ! A better option than Maybury ! I was pretty impressed with Stearman and King in the centre of defence, both got above huge Lincoln attackers to head the ball clear and both were compossed on the ball. I was sdisappointed when Hellings got injured (Any ideas how he is?) becuse I thought he was a good driving force, I'm not sure how old he is however he seems like a strong lad, and with the right eye for a pass he could be an asset. I thought Matty Fryatt had a pretty solid game, I liked the way he was actually dropping back looking for the ball, and also when he made a mistake at the start of the second half nd ran back to stop their attack, he showed some hunger. I did have to leave as Billy Kee came on so I didn't get a chance to see him play, however I did see him warming up and he looks a strong lad, if he has the skill he'll be a top player, you can just tell by looking at him. Did he have a good run out ? From reading a report on the game we seemed to be attacking at will in hte latter parts of the game Q Was this influanced by Kee ? Sorry for the long post.. One more thing THRAC... Hope you don't mind me saying this, however, if you're the guy i think you are, would you say you were separated at birth with Kaebi's translator ?

Are you saying I look like a hit-man? Kee had a promising run out and was trying desperately to make an impact by trying to shoot at every opportunity. His best chance from left of goal about 28 yards out was dragged wide. Leicester enjoyed quite a good last 20 minutes or so because Beaglehole pushed players - including Kaebi - further upfield and this gradually pressured Lincoln into errors although the referee did play his part in the eventual breakthrough. Once ahead, Lincoln's need to be more expansive only helped people like Fryatt, Kee and Kaebi find a bit more space and there never seemed much chance of City surrendering their lead except when Tuttle gave away an unnecessary free kick near the edge of the Citty box. I agree about Kee despite Apexgeo's scepticism and would probably agree about the right flank too seeing Gradel is not an option anyway. King quietly looked a quality player and delivered by far the best pass of the night and Stearman - as DavieG mentioned at the time - seems to benefit from the extra time and options he finds at centre-back.
Geo V Posted 5 September 2007 Posted 5 September 2007 WTF??!! I hope you bring your rose and pin it to your jacket next time Thrac to avoid confusion!!

Milky Posted 5 September 2007 Author Posted 5 September 2007 I was pretty impressed with Stearman and King in the centre of defence, both got above huge Lincoln attackers to head the ball clear and both were compossed on the ball. King is a centre mid! Kenton was at CB with stears.
Manwell Pablo Posted 5 September 2007 Posted 5 September 2007 Good Evening. I don't post on here a lot, however I do read and enjoy the site.Thrac.. Jesus Fing Christ. Now there are two of them.
