last minute nerves - has megson cracked it?

ok, so for most of us the jury is still out on megson, but one thing tat seems to be emerging is that we seem to be a million miles from the teams of the last few seasons (upto and including allen) who conceed silly late goals.

yes fulop contributes to this, but some of the goals we used to let in late would have been unsavable by any keeper...

has megson finally instilled some kind of fitness and concentration that will see an end to conceeding late soft goals.

i certainly hope so; what ever people may say about him and his football being boring, it is these little (massive) things that could single him out as a potentially great manager for us... early days, but certainly something to consider.

Unanswerable so far, we haven't gone into the last 10 minutes of a game under Megson winning by just the single goal so only time will tell.

Villa?

Your point stands though, you have to look at games over a much longer period to make observations like that.

I'll tell you what doesn't help with this. At home, when things are a bit nervey towards the end, the crowd start stiring up panic by screeching "out" "get out". It's a horrible noise.

heheh - it's funny because it's true...

but, it doesn't have to be a particular scoreline, christ we've lost big leads to late goals... i know it's early doors, but even against stoke and the other draws, we've never really looked as bad as in the past in the final minutes, right?

All you have to do is look at Megson's record here.

Won 3 (Forest, Villa, Wednesday)

Drawn 3 (QPR, Stoke, Wolves)

Lost 1 (Charlton)

Any manager would consider that to be a good start at a club. He has sorted the defence out and hopefully the strikers will start scoring more. If that happens, theres no reason why we cannot start moving up the league. The game in hand will help  Its not the biggest embarrassment to lose your only game to second placed Charlton.

Thats a good record but it is easy for me to say that considering the only 3 games out of that bunch I've been to were the three victories :D

I wouldn't rely too much on the game in hand, it's at Ipswich who have a 100% home record and we very rarelly get anything from them even when we've been good and they've been bad.

Mind you that means at least a point now i've posted that :D

If any other manager had achieved that start, most fans would be full of praise for that manager. The fact that its Megson that for some reason people dont like, and what ever he achieves, will never be good enough.

Indeed. If we can beat Villa I see no reason we should be quivering in fear over Ipswich. Nothing like spoiling someone's proud record.

Megson's had a commendable start but tactically his closing out of some games has been highly questionable.

The two defensive substitutions against QPR when we should have won and the replacing of King with Kenton at Sheffield which seemed to open us up like a culinder, albeit without any lasting consequences.

For me you can stick all substitutions in competitive matches unless they effect an improvement in what we are trying to do.

I now believe that megson is the right man for this job although I am slightly worried by some of the decisions that 'ginger mourinho' is making.

-At hillsborough the kenton/King sub as well as the players weren't finishing the game off like they should have been doing

-Vs stoke, not starting with hume or fryatt

-Sending MDV out on loan instead of cort

-Dropping sheehan when he was finally getting games with us and playing well

-etc

Not sure if it's Megson that's solved the last minute nerves thing.

Suspect Tagg's has had something to do with it being an experienced defender, he can drill into them the discipline required for such a role.

Could be the appointment of Taggs suited Megson since Megs believes in being strong defensively, then hopefully nicking a goal or two at the other end.

thats true, either way 2 of the wins and two of the draws could easily have been thrown away but weren't, and forest was even won in the last few minutes, something is going right, and while people talk about 'dropping points' when we've drawn, we could have still lost these games, the fact is we aren't conceding late goals like we used to.

whether its GM or GT, something seems to have clicked in the team, and that's certainly a reason to be cheerful

Performances aside (why the hell CAN'T we play like Brazil, hmm?) that record of Megson's is actually quite impressive.
