Finnegan Posted 5 November 2007 Posted 5 November 2007 A lot gets said about the SPL and a lot of it isn't positive. But it's been a really, really entertaining league this year. As a sort of hobby I've been following the fortunes of Hibs this season, watching their highlights on the BBC website (have good, five minute coverage of every game. Really worth a look) and it's really pleasantly surprising. Anyone else taken the opportunity to get a good dose of Jock football off the BBC? Well worth it. As a slight aside, I have to say Scott McDonald as absolutely fooking class.

Rarely watch it other than the odd bit of scouting for Leicester i remember wanting us to get Naismith when he was 16 & kris Boyd a couple of seasons ago & was annoyed when derby got pearson on the cheap I think Steven Fletcher is worth a punt now
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 5 November 2007 Posted 5 November 2007 LEGEND GIVE HIM A ROO CAP FFS I remember watching Scotty Mac play for the joeys aussie u/19 loving him was clearly our best back then and it's about time he is finally getting a chance and regcognition he deserves as was banging them in for Motherewell and wished he would come to city

He looks brilliant. You can moan on about the standard he plays against in the SPL, but you don't need to be playing Man Yoo or Arsenal to show grace and speed with a fantastically deft touch. And you can't deny his eye for goal, either. He looks class. As for Steven Fletcher, I don't think he's a particularly unknown talent and I imagine he'd cost a wee bit to drag away from Hibs.
DanTheFoxBhoy Posted 6 November 2007 Posted 6 November 2007 He not even capped? He had the opportunity to get on the Australia list for the Asian Cup, but instead chose to commit to Celtic's pre-season to try and score himself a first team place. A rather sensible choice now in light of how well he's doing, and that he has surpassed Venegoor of Hesselink in terms of selection. A double against Killie and his second hatrick v Motherwell the week before, great stuff! If he had've played in the disatrous Asian Cup campaign I daresay his confidence would have taken a hit and Celtic wouldn't be top of the league.

SOCCERROO FOX Posted 7 November 2007 Posted 7 November 2007 He's already been capped hasn't he? Yeah but in Shity qualifiers that don't really count cos no "first team choice players" as none make them selfs avaliable But he in for our friendly against Nigeria in a couple of weeks
Head Honcho Posted 7 November 2007 Posted 7 November 2007 Anyone see the tackle on brown last night? Just watched it Absolute shocker and needs to be stamped on No seriously though! Uefa need to increase any punishment usually expected from a red card for this type of offence-double bubble would only be scratching the surface-this guy needs a lengthy ban!
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 7 November 2007 Posted 7 November 2007 Benji from Hibs is quality, shame they lost most of their top-notch players (Thompson, Brown, Whittaker, Killen, Riordan)to Rnagers and Celtic.

Finnegan Posted 7 November 2007 Author Posted 7 November 2007 Tis the way of things in Scotland. Thee has talent, thee plays will wind up at the old firm eventully. Shame, really. Especially in cases like Riordan's where he'd probably be much happier in life if he'd just stayed put.

Head Honcho Posted 7 November 2007 Posted 7 November 2007 Thats what annoys me and puts me off the spl Cherry picking all the best players isn't isolated to the SPL so why should the SPL annoy you? All the best Italians play for the best Italian sides same in England and Spain! I don't get it why say the SPL annoys you when it's pretty much widespread?
Aberdeen_fox Posted 7 November 2007 Posted 7 November 2007 I'll throw my tuppance worth in since I'm also an Aberdeen fan. Have picked up a bit after a poor start to the season and a crunch UEFA Cup match with Lokomotiv Moscow tomorrow night in front of a sell out Pittodrie (6 Moscow fans travelling over) so hopefully will get the win. Live on BBC Scotland for those of you that can access it/can be bothered watching!
DanTheFoxBhoy Posted 8 November 2007 Posted 8 November 2007 Shame, really. Especially in cases like Riordan's where he'd probably be much happier in life if he'd just stayed put. I've seen that a few times obviously, but it's ultimately up to the players. If they come over because they want to score a first team place and the glory that goes with it, and then don't play well and sit around on the bench for a year, then it comes down to their judgement. Course the 'Old Firm' are two fishes far too big for the pond that they're in, but what are you gonna do? Like I've said before, I think it's more a case of bottom six unable to compete with top six so hopefully the new league structure coming in will start to stabilise things a bit better. I've also advocated moving the Glasgow clubs over to the English FA in the past, but even while that would increase competition in Scotland it would also take a lot of money away from the Scottish clubs, maybe even resulting in having the league fall to obscurity like the Welsh Premier League.

Because theres 2 competitive teams and then the rest at least in EPL you get the bottom teams causeing the occasional upsets and at least being competitve on a regular basis. The class difference is too big that it gets frustrating watching. You don't have to agree Head Honcho but you can't tell me teams like Gretna are ever going to be competitve against the likes of Celtic.

Hmm... They almost won our last fixture, was only one of those pull-two-goals-out-of-your-arse-way-too-late-in-the-game things that saved us Chelsea game comes to mind

I just wish those smaller clubs could keep some of there better players instead of constantly being poached which wont happen because finacially can't match the top 2.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 8 November 2007 Posted 8 November 2007 Hibs beat both the Old Firm in the space of three weeks.
Vennegoor10 Posted 8 November 2007 Posted 8 November 2007 Scott MCcdonald is an excellent player, top score by a long way at the moment. Follow the spl as you can probably guess who is my favourite player!

No you're quite right-but even in England teams like Newcastle, Everton and Tottenham can't compete with the big four!
