A fox for life Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 http://stats.football365.com/dom/ENG/D1/glsagst.html i'm sure most of you are aware but thought i post it. Most managers say you have to build from the back and i'm convinced that we have one of the best defences in the league, as soon as we sign fulup and replace stearman i think we'll be very hard to score against!

A fox for life Posted 28 November 2007 Author Posted 28 November 2007 and just noticed southampton are bottom so if dont score on saturday something must be wrong!
Fez of Mahrez Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 Only Forest and Darlington have conceded less in the whole of the Football League - and they are both going to get promoted this season.
Tommy G Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 Why replace stearman? If it aint broke dont fix it as they say
mat_j101 Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 I thought Stearman looked better on Monday night than he has done for the rest of the season, but still not as good as he played when he first broke into the team.
hairy Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 and just noticed southampton are bottom so if dont score on saturday something must be wrong! That may comeback to haunt you
Tommy G Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 That may comeback to haunt you yep, shouldn't have said that
Bluefoxtim Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 Had 2 clean sheets from the previous 2 games whilst playing 4-4-2. Shows that you don't have to play 5-4-1! Another interesting thing from that website..."we always play well against the better sides"... Well that's true, against top half opposition we are in 6th place, but against bottom half opposition we are 22nd! Innability to get motivated for these games?
Scow Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 It certainly helps when you have McAuley, Kisnorbo and N'Gotty to choose from at centreback. I can't think of many better than those three in this division.
Thracian Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 It certainly helps when you have McAuley, Kisnorbo and N'Gotty to choose from at centreback. I can't think of many better than those three in this division. Maybe but playing three of them for some of the time decimated our attacking potential which was poor enough anyway and results when we've played 4-4-2 suggest it was totally unnecesssary as well. However all three have had their problems when having to work as a pair, like in most teams, and certainly McAuley and Kisnorbo have stacks of work to do on their distribution before either can start feeling smug. Defensively they are outstanding when the opposition attacks in the air. They're better than I thought on the ground too and, particularly last season, they both chipped in with vital goals. All well and good but they give the ball away far too easily and hoist the ball in the air far too willingly when we're in possession. Collectively though the defence has worked well in preventing goals and I see no reason now our midfield is back to strength that they shouldn't improve offensively as well.

There are very few teams in this division that can boast about having central defenders who are particularly comfortable on the ball. For example, Watford have Shittu who is a very effective defender in this division, but couldn't pass to save his life. Looking back on last season, McAuley and Kisnorbo when paired together were very strong defensively in terms of the goals we conceded. We tended to let goals in when we had McCarthy in the side.
morris1234 Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 yes its good having a great defense but we could and should be a lot better the other end. its like fulham on first half performances theyd be top of the prem!
The Stig Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 I thought Stearman looked better on Monday night than he has done for the rest of the season, but still not as good as he played when he first broke into the team. Can't have been much good in the other games as defensively he was still not anywhere near good enough.

I don't disagree with that but it's no reason, if we have ambitions of promotion, that they shouldn't improve their distribution and nor should people ignore the extra pressure it puts on us when they do give the ball away careflessly or thoughtlessly. What you say also indicates that there's no reason whatsoever to use all three of them at once - at least in normal circumstances.
Staf Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 Our defence is quality and when we get a goalscorer we will be awesome
Ric Flair Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 You wait until we start defending on the half way line and we start to concede a few!! Holloway prefers his teams to attack, attack, attack. Clean sheets won't bother him.

Scow Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 I don't think that's actually true. Louise did a stat about it and they were the worst pair of the three IIRC. I'm sure at one point last season McAuley and Kisnorbo were the strongest pairing after half the season was gone - but I could well be wrong basing that assumption over the whole season.

I think we should agree to put a halt to this discussion before we are revealed both to be gibbering idiots without a sniff of a statistic or fact in the air. I apologise for my call to arms.

sdb Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 we've not lost after scoring 1st either - won 4 and drawn 2. not too shabby
Milans Foxes Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 Only Palace and Charlton have scored more than one goal past us this season in the league. In all games if you don't count the forest gift goal, only Chelsea have scored more than one past us all season in all competitions. If only we could learn to score two goals in each game, we will be climbing the table in no time. We just need a midfield to create. Our strikers aren't that bad! I don't think the likes of Wesolowski and Newton are creative enough. Hayes, King and Hume with Clemence should create more chances with Clemence playing the holding role. Even Kaebi at right wing would create more. In january, we need a creative midfielder either on loan or permanent and assuming Kaebi continues to be left out, we need an out and out winger. Someone like Lee Martin would be good. There is no reason with a bit of creativity that we can't climb the league!
Lichfieldfox. Posted 28 November 2007 Posted 28 November 2007 Lies damn lies and statistics. If you look at GOALS scored we'd be in the bottom 4. We defend well but don't score enough which is why we are where we are boys and girls. We have a good defence, a fair set of strikers but insufficeint midfield quality at present. Clem and Weso are too similar (good defensive MF), King looks promising but.... Kishishev a poor buy (also defensive), Newton looks as if he's either good or awful (often both in same match), Porter was promising but can't beat last man, Hayes looked okay on first showing, Sheehan great dead ball/crosser - keep out of defence. Santa for January sales bring us some MF quality Milan and Ollie
