Porsche without an Engine

OLLIE'S PRIORITY IS TO BOLSTER ATTACK

Attackers will head the list of Leicester City targets when the transfer window opens at the end of this month.

That was the outcome of an intensive meeting last night between chairman Milan Mandaric, boss Ian Holloway and head of recruitment Gary Penrice.

Penrice, who rated the current state of the club as "a Porsche with no engine", is described by Holloway as the most important cog in the machine.

He is the key man in setting up the January signings which City hope can drive the team up the Championship table.

Holloway, who takes his team to Ipswich tonight (7.45), has made no secret of his priorities and Penrice, right, added: "You are only as good as your attacking options and that is what we will be trying to improve.

"Ollie's teams at QPR and Plymouth have always had good wingers and good front men.

"His style is to produce football which is entertaining and, at times, we were criticised for being too attack-minded.

"I have watched the side and I think we know we have a decent defence, the record shows that, and the team needs help in other areas.

"That is not having a go at the players already here because they have had so much to put up with, so many changes, and they just need some help from a few new signings.

"It cannot have been easy being part of a squad signed by three different managers in such a short space of time, and it needs to settle down.

"After QPR and Plymouth, this is a different kettle of fish for us. It is a big club but like a Porsche without an engine at the moment, and we aim to put that right."

Penrice cannot, for obvious reasons, reveal any names on the list compiled, and is optimistic that, come January, there will be significant additions.

Mandaric had already declared when Holloway arrived that he will support transfer plans, as he has done with every manager, and Penrice said: "Mr Mandaric was very supportive and everything about him is positive.

"He has been fantastic. The will is there and he has been absolutely superb."

Penrice has had little time to set up a scouting network but has been working through his contacts and those of the chairman.

He said: "The game is now global and he has a lot of international contacts which will help me, but it is frustrating that time is so short.

"The character of a player is important and that takes time to judge.

"I have sometimes watched a player for a year before making a move.

"Now I only have two or three weeks but we, the players and fans, know what has to be done."
