Saving Penalties

Marton Fulop is a class goalkeeper, its only his kicking that prevents him being labelled top class IMO

Now I am a goalkeeping coach, nothing like the level of the professional game but I have Level 2 and coach keepers week in week out for a local side

In the past three weeks Fulop has faced two penalties

On each occasion he has dived, anticipating the direction of the kick, way too early

Last night, he was almost touching the right post before the Counago's penalty hit the back of the net, centre of the goal

I'd like to see him told to wait a second before moving, he won't get to the perfect penalty of course but he'd stand more chance of getting other penalties than anticipating so early that the striker has ine ffect the full goal to aim at.

There's an art to saving penalties, beyond trying to guess from foot movement and eyes of the taker, and a goalkeeper can tilt the odds slightly more in his favour by delaying his move a touch to at least ensure he will get a slightly mis-hit shot.

Not every keeper can be a Paul Cooper (one for the old timers) but at present Fulop's giving himself no chance.

Maybe we should just not conceed them :frusty:

will have to speak to certain referees about that!

by the way I'm not criticising Fulop as such, he's a talented guy, I think that Stowell though needs to get him to change a technique or two for penalties

But if he leaves it too late he's got no chance of saving the pen if Coungao hits it perfectly :dunno:.

A keeper is rarely going to save a perfectly hit penalty. My point is he has more chance of getting one not completely in the corner if he doesn't go too early!

Being a keeper and a coach, penalties are like a lottery. It doesnt matter how much you work on them in training when it comes to a game its pot luck.

If he left it later then he might do the obvious a go to go the wrong way, see the ball going to the opposite corner and then do a half arsed dive.. Then he would have everyone on here and the Championship pundits slagging him off he not making any effort.

A Striker should never miss the target on a penalty. A Keeper has a 50% chance of saving one.

If Counago hits it perfectly then he's not saving it full stop.

Prehaps perfects the wrong word lol

if Coungao hits it "Pretty well" he's got less chance of saving it.

Cn we re sign Zelko (sic) Kalac? He was (allegedly) awesome at saving peno's. He just never got the chance.

Seen him at training a few times, thought he was gash!!

Lanky fooker though

Didn't Alan Lee take the penalty :dunno:

if so, sorry. I thought it was Counago and it was announced as such at the ground.

Lee is built like a brick $$$$house!

Yeah but Kalac must have been at least 8ft!

Kalac 6 ft 7+1⁄2 in

Fulop 6 ft 6 in

Just for the record, Dudek who is a decent penalty stopper is only 6 ft 1 in.

So its a myth that the taller the keeper the better they are at saving penalties

I don't buy that, if you face enough you can give yourself much more chance of saving them through learning the tricks & how players run up to hit it to certain spots. A mate of mine used to be a goalie & whenever we're watching a game and there's a pen, he says during the run-up where it's going. He very rarely gets one wrong, he's also saved almost every penalty he's ever faced.

You can read the body shape in the run-up, even if the player's trying to put you off with looking at certain places etc.. Only the best players can really disguise where it's going. Look at how many Reina saves, don't tell me that's down to luck

Top flight footballers can be and are deceptive. in 1 month count how many penalies are given in the premier league and how many are saved/conceded by the keeper going the wrong way. come back to me and if your right and there are more saved than conceded than I'll have to re-think my training drills

As for your mate, if he saved almost every penalty against him, he must have been shite on crosses and 1 on 1's otherwise he'd have been playing proffesionally!!

How do you make that out? A goal isn't two-dimensional, and even if it were, wouldn't it be 33% (Right, left and centre)?

Even if a keeper dives then his legs stay central for the middle. ala Dudek against Milan.

I'd say 33% aswell
