Best Ever Guitarist

I'd just like to know who you rank as the best guitarist ever.

For me I'd like to nominate Eric Clapton, as I am a huge fan of blues rock.

To be inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame 3 times (As a solo artist, With Cream, With The Yardbirds) speaks volumes as to how great he is.

So please post who you think is the best ever guitarist.

Toss up between Jimmy Page and David Gilmour, for me.

Yeah im always surprised Gilmour doesn't rank higher in some of the polls I've seen. Did some outstanding work with Pink Floyd.

It would have to be one of Jimi Hendrix Eric Clapton,Pete Townsend, Peter Green and Eric Clapton.

Can't choose which though so I am not going to!

I am a huge Pink Floyd fan (First band I ever saw - 27 years ago!) but Gilmour hasn't got the emotional impact in his playing that the other guys have.

Although I'm a big fan of a lot of the classic rock type guitarists, like Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix, for the sheer beauty and musicality of his work, Johnny Marr is my favourite by a mile (although best ignore his stuff with the Healers).

If you want to hear some of his best work without Morrissey warbling over the top of it, this geezer http://www.youtube.com/user/danielearwicker has recorded some very accurate versions of Marr's stuff with the Smiths, but it's the version of Billy Bragg's 'Greetings to the New Brunette' which demonstrates best of all what I like about Johnny Marr.

I'm also a fan of Bert Jansch and am getting into some of Vini Reilly's stuff at the minute

I dont see how you can look past Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page!!

Both amazing players, changed the concept of the word " genius "

there are a lot of good guitar players but there are not many " genius " guitar players and as you can see i use that word lightly!!

Maybe not 'Best Ever', and I'm no expert, but Lindsey Buckingham appears to know his way round a guitar. Take 3 minutes out of your life to watch/listen to this: Big Love (Live Acoustic). Blows my socks off!

Neil Peart - Rush (not a huge fan of the band, but an amazing drummer); Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater; Mick Fleetwood.

Gotta mention Phil Collins too, I guess.

Bit of a Fleetwood Mac fan are we?

'tis a great performance all around! guitar itself not that impressive though, he's fast but what he's playing isn't that hard by any means

I'm sure that's a classic guitar too?

My favourite guitarist of the modern day is Tommy Emmanuel, not sure how many of you have heard of him. Went to see him in concert at Coventry and he was sensational.

I'd recommend some of his stuff on Youtube.

If we're talking about sheer technical proficiency then these guys are at the top of the list, along with Steve Vai.

If we're talking about expression and melody then I'll say Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. I'm not a massive Pink Floyd fan, but I can definitely see why some people are saying Dave Gilmour. Also can't believe no-one's said Slash yet!

In terms of modern guitarists I really rate Mark Tremonti (Alter Bridge, ex-Creed), his technical proficiency coupled with his feeling of just a damn good melody is unsurpassed by any of the new breed of guitarists IMO. If people look past the 'he was in Creed' thing and listen to the new stuff, then they'd see exactly why I was saying this.
