Bellend Sebastian Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 My favourite guitarist of the modern day is Tommy Emmanuel, not sure how many of you have heard of him. Went to see him in concert at Coventry and he was sensational. I'd recommend some of his stuff on Youtube. Is that the guy that basically makes the guitar sound like pretty much everything except a guitar? If it is, I saw him at the Guildhall a couple of years ago and he was really impressive. I was in Sheehans today and they had a tablature book for him - that might be quite a challenge
Foxhateram Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 Joe Satrianihttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cEzIcm6BeBQ Eddie Van Halen http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ULEBSxP725w amen to that!!!!!!!
Kilworthfox Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 How about these babies? Gary Rossington Lynard Skynard remember Sweet Home Alabama This is their best song! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=FSD7cfi3JPQ Wait till the end 4:56 onwards! Absolute classic Mark & David Knopfler Dire Straits http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=LB3b1W6rEDw Sultans Of Swing http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=aNaKWXqXkhw Money For Nothing
Kilworthfox Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 If we're talking about sheer technical proficiency then these guys are at the top of the list, along with Steve Vai.If we're talking about expression and melody then I'll say Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. I'm not a massive Pink Floyd fan, but I can definitely see why some people are saying Dave Gilmour. Also can't believe no-one's said Slash yet! In terms of modern guitarists I really rate Mark Tremonti (Alter Bridge, ex-Creed), his technical proficiency coupled with his feeling of just a damn good melody is unsurpassed by any of the new breed of guitarists IMO. If people look past the 'he was in Creed' thing and listen to the new stuff, then they'd see exactly why I was saying this. Great shout, don't know how I missed him out! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=35ft52fOiGQ
Libertine Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 Paul Gilbert. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Yml4V-zcf3A http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=VGuNxeOSP4I Rory Gallagher. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=33Jaodra7AY http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Yml4V-zcf3A Obviously speed isn't everything.

Like I say, look at some of his stuff on YouTube and you'll be impressed. The guy's an entertainer and I cannot see how anybody in the world is better than him at the moment if I'm honest.

Mickey O'Neil Posted 4 January 2008 Posted 4 January 2008 I struggle with the Hendrix 'Thing'. I think you need to be on drugs to enjoy that!! On a serious note, I think if you can't enjoy a particular style of music, then surely you can't fully appreciate how good someone is. People keep saying Clapton and Hendrix to me, & I can see what they're saying, but I don't appreciate their style of music so I won't get it. Tom Morello for me from the modern guitarists though. and Fieldy on his 5 string Bass!
Trav Le Bleu Posted 6 January 2008 Posted 6 January 2008 Why haven't I seen J Mascis mentioned yet? More guitar skill in his little finger than in most guitarists' whole body! Hendrix is obviously a class act though! And finally Tom Morello just simply for being innovative - no use being brilliant and playing the same old same old!
Simon Posted 6 January 2008 Posted 6 January 2008 I'm trying, but I really can't.Creed dammit, CREED! I can see why! But his stuff since then with Alter Bridge has been awesome, simply awesome. The shout for Tom Morello was also a good one Trav- can't believe I didn't mention him!
Fil Posted 6 January 2008 Posted 6 January 2008 Surprised nobody has mentioned Tony Iomni yet, he created so many killer riffs in Black Sabbath. However Jimi Hendrix is better with his teeth than most with their hands and has more flair than Ronaldo, Henry and Trundle put together! To be the best guitarist in my book you've got to be a showman and Hendrix certainly was that as well as being one of the most technically gifted as well.

To be the best guitarist in my book you've got to be a showman and Hendrix certainly was that as well as being one of the most technically gifted as well. a guitarist has gotta have soul, some are great technically, steve vai, brian may, eddie van halen but they play without soul, it seems like lead guitar-by numbers. jimi hendrix, peter green, bbking, john lee hooker, jimmy page can't think of any modern ones, but i'm sure there are some....!
MikeyT Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 Oh theres been a few. Jimi Hendrix, Gary Moore, Joe Satriani and Richie Sambora, would be my top 4! All legends in their own right!
shen Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 Great shout, don't know how I missed him out!http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=35ft52fOiGQ Add John Petrucci to that list along with Yngwie Malmsteen

To be the best guitarist in my book you've got to be a showman and Hendrix certainly was that as well as being one of the most technically gifted as well. Surely to be the "best" guitarist in the world you've got to be the best technically, be the best at playing every style of music, be the best at playing with emotion and feeling, be the best best showman, the the best at innovating........in other words, IMHO, there is no best guitarist in the world, as any guitarist could potentially be better than the "best" in some way.... Having said that, I'd put the likes of Petrucci, Michael Romeo (Symphony X), Hendrix, Al Di Meola and Frank Gambale up there amongst the best.

On the second one its best to go to 3:24
stez Posted 9 January 2008 Posted 9 January 2008 On the second one its best to go to 3:24 i was being a bit saucey, a bit oldman-ish. i love muse, and that lad out of ash although they're not that modern these days
Bellend Sebastian Posted 9 January 2008 Posted 9 January 2008 He rocks pretty hard for a bloke from Devon
MrsJohnMurphy Posted 11 January 2008 Posted 11 January 2008 J Mascis everytime. No-one else plays with as much soul.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 12 January 2008 Posted 12 January 2008 J Mascis everytime. No-one else plays with as much soul. Is what I said earlier bro!
