Fez of Mahrez Posted 11 January 2008 Posted 11 January 2008 Thank you. Taken a back seat from the media since Olly arrived and is now delivering the goods financially to aid some really interesting signings. I hope the new players settle in and perform quickly whilst also raising the barrier for some of the frustrating players we already have. I'm wary of being too OTT but it's nice to see so much positivity on here for a change - now the players and fans must respond and create another special atmosphere and performance tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully this will be the start of something good. Let's not expect too much from the Hungarians, especially Bori who doesn't even speak English. In time, they could be great but our fans have a track record of expecting people to hit the ground running and it doesn't always work like that. I've been in touch with a number of you through the day and everyone seems bang up for it. Let's do our job in the stands and give the players the best possible platform to go and win the game. Blue Army.

Blue Army. That sounds suspiciously like getting in some excuses for the Hungarians before they start. I lost count of the excuses made for Kaebi. Would anyone make excuses for Gradel or Porter? I don't remember em. I'm living in hope about these fellas but let em be judged on the same basis as everyone else if they're going to play in the first team. Wenger wouldn't do that, of course. Wenger would acclimatise them for six months. But, certainly in the case of Bori, we've loaned out the one player who could probably come into the side while the newboy acclimatises. In other words Holloway's saying I don't need Gradel, this boy's better. Well, if he is, no-one's going to enjoy tomorrow afternoon more than me.
Babylon Posted 11 January 2008 Posted 11 January 2008 Would anyone make excuses for Gradel or Porter? I don't remember em. Because you hype up players so much people expect bloody miracles!!! Say they are good, and keep it at that. People hated Sheehan before he kicked a ball because they were bloody sick of hearing about him!!!!
termite111 Posted 11 January 2008 Posted 11 January 2008 and a VERY WELL DONE goes for olly aswel i see all these FICKLE DOUBTERS have now shut up! what a difference a signing makes!!!!!! come on get behind olly now for f**k sake

To be fair Thrac, just about everyone on here actually wants the likes of Porter and Gradel to do the job, but if Ollie thinks Gradel is best at Bournemouth and these guys are more ready we have to give him a chance to prove it. Porter may well be challenging these guys for a place as soon as he is back fit. Wenger would in fact have bought in about 20 such kids and never played half of them ever. Hardly the same situation as we have is it?

I take your point Thracian but you're in danger of needing this book!

People hated Sheehan before he kicked a ball because they were bloody sick of hearing about him!!!! And how much have Kaebi and Fantasy Fryatt been talked about? This is a weird club. We had eight fans and a coachload of parents at the Academy play-off final compared with 4,600 Sunderland supporters. There was no doubting what they thought of their Under 18's. Down here we think far more of signings from outside. Fryatt's what 22? And still people sing his praises. Stearman's roughly the same age but gets hammered mercilessly. And don't blame Stearman on me. I've hardly been his biggest fan. But he's sure done as much for the cause as Fryatt these last two years.

I'm not suggesting it is the same situation, just pointing out that Wenger believes in acclimatising players before plunging them into the first team. Presumably, part of the reason is that the Arsenal crowd wouldn't take kindly to poor performances whether the players were new to the side or not.

Come on Thracian that's a 7.5 hour round trip hardly a fair comparison. Why wasn't it at neutral venue anyway! The only thing you can say about any of our players is that they are not universally adored practically everyone has been slated on here. As for the new guys, people are desperate to see some football and most of it is wishful thinking anyway and who can blame them. As for Gradel maybe he chose to go back, for a start it's possibly easier for him to nip over to France, we just don't know the background. Having read most of Ollie's book ( not the Plymouth bit) one thing that comes across is that he cares for his players and always looks to listen to them and to do the best for them.
Babylon Posted 11 January 2008 Posted 11 January 2008 And how much have Kaebi and Fantasy Fryatt been talked about? Not as much as Sheehan... Princess Diana has had less words written about her than that bloody lad!!! People turned against Kaebi also because of the ridiculous hype, no way has Fryatt been hyped up the way you have some of the academy lads. People over rate him massively, but not every thread turns into Fryatt love-athon... most sensible people see him as nothing more than back up with the team as it was!! We had eight fans and a coachload of parents at the Academy play-off final compared with 4,600 Sunderland supporters. There was no doubting what they thought of their Under 18's. Down here we think far more of signings from outside. Nonsense... we were away for goodness sake. Do you honestly think 4,500 sunderland fans would have come down here, you'd of been lucky to get 50!!!! But he's sure done as much for the cause as Fryatt these last two years. Aye... feck all.
davieG Posted 11 January 2008 Posted 11 January 2008 I'm not getting too excited about anyone before I see them play. Nor am I but after all the dross you can hardly blame people for getting a tad excited at worst we could have 11 round pegs in 11 round holes, that would be a first for more than 3 years. I'm so desperate even that would excite me.
Hullfox Posted 11 January 2008 Posted 11 January 2008 I just think it's great to see real optimism around here. (Well for most people anyway)

Presumably, part of the reason is that the Arsenal crowd wouldn't take kindly to poor performances whether the players were new to the side or not. Unfortunately we currently don't have a midfield containing Hleb, Seth and friends... we have Kenton and Chambers. In most normal circumstances i'd agree but we have no choice but to chuck them in. Gradel would have been as big a risk, not forgetting the poor lads recent home problems. If Porter was fit it would have helped we easing them in, but he isn't.

I'm so desperate even that would excite me. Exactly. And my original post was just a few words about tempering that excitement after the Kaebi debacle, not a dig at Levi bloody Porter!

Presumably, part of the reason is that the Arsenal crowd wouldn't take kindly to poor performances whether the players were new to the side or not. Arsenal can afford to do that. Arsenal can get away with not playing the youngsters and foreign imports straight away because of the quality in their side. We need players for right now, not for the future.
