WetFlannel Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 At least almost everyone got out okay... Must be a tad frightening on board a crashing plane
samingram_uk Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 I was watching it on SN, just after it happend, must be terrifying on board.
lookwhaticando Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 Heavy stuff. It's a relatively new plane, too... 7 years old and has 23,000 hours under its belt. I imagine it's been written off in this accident.
Thracian Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 It's easy to take air travel for granted but things like this emphasise that things do go wrong. At least on this occasion it seems that the safety procedures worked efficiently and effectively. You just wonder how it happened. Must have been a bit dramatic for the road traffic on the aircraft's flightpath with this monster dropping down almost on their vehicles.
Maybes Posted 17 January 2008 Author Posted 17 January 2008 You have to give credit to all the BA staff especially the pilots. The pilot seems to have landed pretty much perfect in the soft grass. Top marks!
Monk Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 It's difficult to see what has really happened here. Either they knew the landing gear was going to collapse so they ditched it on the grass to avoid a fire, or something serious happend on the final descent. Either way it looks like the pilots did a good job of bringing it to a halt so fast and getting everyone off. Just by chance I saw a video on youtube last night called 'crazy landings - crosswinds in hong kong' or something like that. Try searching for it, I can't link to it as youtube is blocked at work. Basically the pilot lands the plane on the runway at a ridiculous angle. Awesome skill. I'd love to own a small aircraft some day. A Harrier jet preferably so I can come and deliver the match ball some saturdays
Trav Le Bleu Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 As the old pilots saying goes, "any landing you can walk away from is a good landing." Good landing mate!
Staf Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 Cant believe knowone got hurt i bet everyone onboard is shaken
Ashley Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 Shocking, the people who were on the plane surely will be scared of flying again.
Monk Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 The thing is that there are so few fatal air crashes these days. I mean, in Europe, the last one was what 2002 when Concord crashed? A plane leaves Heathrow every 3-4 minutes. Just think statistically what the chances are of being in an accident, let alone a fatal one. AND I watched Castaway last night.

The pilot has been quoted as saying he lost all power on the final approach - he was essentially operating a 150,000+ kilo glider for the last few moments of flight. No avionics either, it's been said.

Just think statistically what the chances are of being in an accident, let alone a fatal one.AND I watched Castaway last night. The last few accidents were since Concorde (which was 2001). There was a mid-air collision over Germany in 2002 - 71 died. In 2003 there was an accident in France (1 fatality). In 2006, 3 died in Norway.

Sound like a battery problem then. No power to engines, no power to the avionics = no control at all of plane. They must have been right at the end of final approach, luckily!
Monk Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 Pilot must have browned himself. Maybe it stalled or something. Still makes it more of a miracle no one was killed then!
Lillehamring Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 quite handy for the car hire tho... i used to live in richmond, right under the flight path, and one day, don't know if anyone can remember this, two eastern european refugees stowed away in the under carriage of a airliner, and when it was lowered one of them fell out into the warehouse behind my house... i think the other one died of hyperthermia, they were just wearing shirts i think, it was summer

I flew back from Amsterdam last Thursday and I was kakking myself! Been on about a 20 planes alone in the past 12 months but for some reason this time I was bricking it
Monk Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5GAKBSNoLE Yeah thats the one!
Monk Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 Imgine that bad boy that one is hilarious. As is this one.
Suffolk_fox Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 "It's a miracle. The man deserves a medal as big as a frying pan." BA worker commenting on the pilot. I would tend to agree....
