Driving Lessons.

Fooking ridiculous. Passed my test back in November, but if the insurance companies think I'm going to pay £1,800 then they are seriously mistaken!

Went on confused.com, cheapest £1,800 and the most expensive is £3,400  also been on compare the market.

I've tried numerous times to get a quote, and tried lots of combinations. What makes it more ridiculous it that the charge of £1,800 is with the poorest car possible from autotrader and with the biggest excess I can have.

I paid for all my lessons myself and buying the car/insurance would have to be made my me. That doesn't include the numerous repairs, road tax, petrol etc.

Are you lot just sponging off the folks?!

EDIT: Just went on a site 'specialising' in student insurance. Filled all the details in then they say that can not offer me a quote due to my unique criteria. I'm a typical sodding student.

Welcome to the world of driving. Its a fucking expensive game, theres no doubt about it. I would guess that 75% of people who pass quite simply have to sponge off the parents - it's just too expensive.

I passed in about June, didnt get my car until September. My insurance is with Admiral, found through a search engine, £1350, my own policy, fully comp. Thats driving a 1 litre Corsa. Then there's petrol.

If you can afford to run a car while at uni, then you must be sponging off your parents, unless you got some massive grant or something.

EDIT:

Well done Tilley and Joe. Took me 3 goes to pass, its awful failing, because the pressure mounts every time you do it. Well done.

Cheers mate. And regarding the quote in bold: how the hell?! I can't find anything less than £1800 for something like that anywhere.

Theres loads of rating factors mate. Area, where the cars parked over-night, type of car of course. I dont think my excess is too bad either (shocking that I dont know what it actually is considering I actually work in insurance lol). Insurance is all about the pooling and sharing of risks - it wouldnt surprise me if premiums had gone up due to a large number of claims during the period of awful weather we had a month or so ago.

£1800 is a nightmare though. Have you got a car already? I'd advise you to save up of you havent. It's brilliant being able to drive and that, but the cost of it isnt, unless you're working a decent number if hours per week. You can pay the premiums monthly if that helps though.

Nah not got a car yet, but I think I should have the money available through some bonus bonds that will mature soon enough.

The plan is to get a car now; I can't pass and then neglect it completely. Not really that interested in going on my mum's insurance either, it's not worth it for £1200 for the year. Not looking at getting anything too special, just a 1-1.2 litre thing that runs alright will do me nicely.

Dont go on your parents insurance - it's brilliant, cheaper premium etc.... until after an few years you decide to take out your own policy and they ask how many years no claims - well, erm none actually. A lot of insurance companies dont accept no claims if you're a named driver.

Get your own policy, take the hit, and you'll reap the rewards come next years renewal (assuming you have no claims of course).

My quote from Admiral? £3400. lol

Going to see about adding a parent or two to the policy, should bring it down elsewhere somewhat hopefully.

I'm with Norwich Union (or whatever it is now) and paying £1100 for 9 months. If I stay no claims then I'll get 50% off for the next 12 months which is pretty good imo.

Obviously the best idea is to get a 1 or 1.2 litre (mine's 1.2) and have parent(s) on the policy too.

Nope, nothing like that. That was on a 1.0 litre Corsa as well. Madness.

Thats very strange. There must be something thats making the price be so high. What about mileage?

Just made my first journey after sorting the insurance, first time in my car too. I was more nervous driving on my own than I was driving in my test. :sweating:

young lad + Corsa = stereotype, in the eyes of insurers, I'd have thought?

I'd reccomend Endsleigh for students, they don't have students down as one of their high-risk occupations and Adrian Flux are usually pretty good on prices for high-risk stuff like new drivers etc - insured me on a slightly modfied Alfa 2.0 for just over £600 with only 2 years NCB, even if they love the paperwork.

Also, Grandad spec cars (Volvo 440, Rovers etc.) are usually fairly cheap to insure, cause statistics wise they don't get crashed so much even if they're a 1.6 or whatever. If its something that you're only going to use at weekends etc. keep the estimated mileage low and you'll get something ~£1250 probably if your post code isn't too bad.

Well done to Joe. Got my test in a few weeks, just bought a car, 01 KA. All KA's I've put in to the various insurance websites have given me around the £1300 - £1400 mark. As mine is a collectors model its going to cost me £1500! Never mind! I'm well happy with the car though so will happily pay the bit extra. I'm also proud to say with my hard earned savings I've payed for the car, lessons (all but 3 or 4) and will pay for the insurance.
