18. Mysteries - Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man

good, nothing amaazing, guitar was a bit samey, her voice bland. 5/10

nice leaving the venue, roll credits music, not much more than that tho....

cheers, a good compilation, all in all... drop the middle couple of tunes, and the noisy shit at the end, and thats a great party/summer drive mix, that i will be sharing...

Here is my review.

Bonobo

I loved this. Very strong opening track. Atmospheric, chilled out and constantly interesting. Twisting and turning. The voice is very interesting too - it's unusual in a way I can't put my finger on. Not a short track but left me wanting more. 8/10.

Quantic

1st time through I enjoyed this track without really noticing much about it. Second time through I listened a bit harder and I didn't enjoy it. It annoyed me somehow. It's semi-Jazz leanings and the vocals turned me off a little to be honest. Better in my opinion as background. 6/10

Quantic again.

Really enjoyed the vocals this time around. Really good groove. Really worked for me. 7.5/10

Breakestra

Awesome. This is why I listen to mixes. An immediate favourite. Not many tracks like this, smooth, groovy and soulful have an immediacy that this does. Really enjoyed the vocals.. it just all works. 9/10.

Quest.

I feel like I should like it.. but after a couple of listens, it's left me cold. The bass line is promising but it needs a hook to pull me in. 6/10

Ray Charles.

Epic. I've always loved Ray Charles and always loved this track since the 1st time I heard it. Ray works perfectly on this mix. Stands proud as part of the collective as a mix and indeed on it's own. 9/10

Seu Jorge

Didn't enjoy it at all. Felt a bit tacky and jangly. I just don't get it, I think. Not easy to follow RC - but not my cuppa tea. Too busy and never lifts itself above the mediocre - if it even gets there. 5/10.

The Count Five

Good change of pace. Nice and lovely. Loved the intro and it was pleasant throughout. 7/10

Love

A fan of this song. Have been for some time now... I do always find myself waiting for it to REALLY explode.. and it doesn't. It teases you, then a little explosion... then brings it down again. I think the restraint is part of it's charm. 7.5/10

Hank The Knife.

Enjoyed this. Bit of a foot-tapper. Strong tune. Catchy. I like fun and this is fun. 8/10

Mules.

Nope. Not a fan. Monotonous and nagging. I'm yet to hear a Mules song I enjoy. 3/10

Fields.

Immediate return to form. Lovely build up and a bloody good song. Will be checking out more by them. Continues to grow on me with each listen. 8.5/10

Lions

I feel like I've heard (and probably skipped) it all before. Just a bit dull really. 5/10.

Ikara Kolt.

Loved the intro. Perhaps lost it's way a little bit but certainly an enjoyable listen. Liked the driving beat. 7.5/10

FotL

This grated. Discordant and unenjoyable. Not my bag. 2/10

High Contrast.

This is more like it, however. Edgy, atmospheric, layered, cool, solemn and soulful all wrapped up in a bitesize chunk of good tunesmithery. 9/10.

Errors.

I almost skipped this track but it picked up and I've found myself enjoying it after a few listens. It lacked the immediacy that some of these tracks have in spades, but there is something I like there. It feels familiar but fresh and I enjoyed it. 7/10.

Beth Gibbons.

I enjoyed this more than I expected to. In fact, it was something of a highlight. Very moody and the vocals are strong... almost hauntingly beautiful. Gorgeous little track. Unexpected gem. 9/10.

Pretentious French Bollocks.

Enjoyable while it lasted, but what the fu ck was it? Unrated.

OVERALL

After 3 listens this review was written. After each listen, my favourite changed from one track to another. Some good stuff on here and it works well as a mix too, in my opinion. Breakestra, The Fields, High Contrast and the Beth Gibbons track took me by surprise, in a pleasant way, whilst Love and Ray Charles were expected positives.

I just don't get the Mules or that Seu Jorge track.

Overall, it's greater than the sum of it's parts as it hangs together well. 8/10.

The "pretentious French bollocks" comments by everyone demonstrate how music can be taken out of context completely! Les Negresses Vertes are a proper band with a large back catalogue and the album this is taken from (Mlah, 1991) is one of my favourite foreign-language albums and that's the opening track but the rest are more "proper songs".

Seu Jorge fair enough doesn't seem to appeal to many but I still love that song. If I'm completely honest, I thought that would go down as well as anything! Goes to show how wrong you can be.

The Future of the Left album is one of my favourite of the past year or two. I probably should have played it safe and gone for Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues by Mclusky if I was trying to score points but I'm a Leicester fan - it's not in my nature.

The Breakestra album is called Hit The Floor and although that is probably the strongest song on there, the whole thing is great. I could actually have put #2 Gotta Let Me Know or #8 Recognize on there instead and they'd have had the same reaction. Recommended.

1. Bonobo - Days To Come

Good opener. Unspectacular, but setting a chilled mood. Nice and neutral. 6/10

2. Quantic - The Sound Of Everything

Very nice flow from the opening track! Very hard to keep oneself from moving in the chair and tapping along with the feet. Great funky bass line, and soothing vocals. The positioning of the song gives it an extra whole point for me. 8/10

3. Waiting For Your Touch - Spanky Wilson & The Quantic Soul Orchestra

Yup, the theme is shaping up nicely here. This track just feels like a filler and found it got a bit monotonous towards the end, but that said, this is still a fine piece of funky music. 6/10

4. Hiding – Breakestra

Another great bass line in this one, and liked the overall groove of it. Just as good as track #2. Am getting into this now… 8/10

5. Oh My God - A Tribe Called Quest

Hats off to the flow of the mix so far. Hip hop’ish, funkish and all that (I’m not good at identifying genres). I’d much rather listen to this kind of music than what they currently air on radio or TV. Nice. 7/10

6. What'd I Say - Ray Charles

Ray Charles, a safe and suitable pick on this album. Like him or not, it’s good music! 7/10

7. Carolina - Seu Jorge

Ohh yes, you’ve got a good mix going here and a latino is another good choice. I haven’t heard much latino that doesn’t get on my nerves, but I quite enjoyed this one. 7,5/10

8. Psychotic Reaction - The Count Five

Started out nicely, and while I do like the tempo change, that part is a bit iffy. With all these different genres getting thrown in to the mix, there’s always the odd one that’ll catch one’s attention and the odd one that you’ll overhear. This is one of the latter. 5,5/10

9. A House Is Not A Motel – Love

Another change, another genre. It slightly disrupts the flow, but ok. I like the classic build up of this song, and the CCR sounding end does it no harm, it’s just slightly mediocre. 6/10

10. Stan The Gunman - Hank The Knife

I know this song! Didn’t know that I did, heh. Nice upbeat and catchy tune that should be played very loudly to really get that bass all around the room! Don’t like the fading end though… 7/10

Hmmm… Nah. I can’t put my finger on what’s wrong with it, but it doesn’t work for me. 5/10

12. Song For The Fields – Fields

Love that intro! Was everything the previous song wasn’t, and just might be the pick of the bunch so far. Loved the vocals and definitely deserves a few more listens. 8,5/10

13. Song For Luna - As Tall As Lions

Something strangely appealing about this song, and liked the Peter Gabriel-like vocals. Another example of a song that flows well with the previous one. 7/10

14. At The Lodge - Ikara Colt

The tempo made for a nice change and I should maybe have a second listen straight away, but it just seemed disjointed. I mostly want clean sounds and attentive production, and I’m not in the mood to listen to the ‘trashy’ sounds of this right away. 5,5/10

15. The Lord Hates A Coward - Future Of The Left

Lot of distortion and oozes of frustration. I irked at the beginning and that didn’t go away until right before the ending. On the first listen, I didn’t quite like it, but this is one that should get listened to again, and I will do so… later! On to the next song first… N/A

16. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - High Contrast

Liked the start, adjusted myself to her voice and then… well, didn’t see that coming! Not really music to my taste, but having listened to a fair bit of electronica, it wasn’t that bad. The sample worked well I think. 6/10

17. Salut! France – Errors

No, terrible I’m afraid. Boring, annoying and Gameboy sounds don’t do it for me. 2/10

18. Mysteries - Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man

Another hairpin turn in genre. Mix getting a little erratic since track 14, but it’s a nice and soothing song which I could easily fall asleep to (which is not a bad thing). Beautiful voice and a simple ballad. 6,5/10

19. La Valse - Les Negresses Vertes

And to finish off you get a nice flow from track #18 to the final one. It gets the mood back to something like it was after the first chilled song. Good choice. 6/10

Overall 6,4 ~ 7.

I’ve rounded up because this really was a nice mix (literally!) and it seems like a bit of effort was put into it. You’ve done this more than a few times now haven’t you? Got a good ear for music and there’s stuff in that compilation I will definitely listen to again! Thanks a lot for a good experience

wayhey, at long last I've started getting round to some more reviewing. Fez's got 'properly' listened to last night and i'll do some more today. Anyways, review...

1 Bonobo – It's Bonobo so I was knew I would enjoy this. Love the album. Strong opener. 9/10

2 Quantic – I generally like Quantic but this isn't one of my favourites. Bit too jazzy for my liking. 7/10

3 Spanky Wilson & Quantic – funk, funk, funk - tis all flowing well so far. 8/10

4 Breakestra – oohhh, yes please. By this point I'd turned down the lights and was grooving round the room, balcony doors wide open (well, the rest of the village needed to hear it!), glass of wine and cigarette in hand. Smooth tune, well put together 'full' sound. Must find out more about them. 10/10

5 A Tribe Called Quest – I'm fussy about my hip hop... and this didn't really do it for me. Bit 'rappy' for me, perhaps? 7/10

6 Ray Charles – Hmmm, sorry, not convinced. I know the tune, obviously, but this kinda broke the mood for me. 6/10

7 Seu Jorge – oh, no, no, no. Bleeuugh – reminded me of being serenaded by those tacky 'troupes' you get in beachfront cafes in the Algarve. (Yes, I know they're actually Brazilian, I'm using poetic license!). "A rose for the lady...?" – "no, bugger off and leave us in peace" 2/10

8 The Count Five – Ahhh, we're getting there again. Wasn't quite convinced on first listen but definitely a grower. As others have said, sounds like it should be a film soundtrack. A summer driving song, this. 8/10

9 Love – works well in conjunction with the other tracks on this mix. I love the changes of pace/mood. Again, I'm getting 'movie soundtrack' from this. 6.5/10

10 Hank the Knife – and...... rock 'n' roll, kids. This actually made me laugh out loud. The neighbours (who dared to venture out) are throwing bemused glances in my direction! Not sure it's something I'd actually listen to that often though. 6.5/10

11 The Mules – I seem to recall you trying to convince me about The Mules before – it didn't work then and this has done nothing to persuade me. Irritating voice. 3/10

12 Fields – This all feels to me like they were just being a bit self-indulgent. Didn't really work for me – started to feel the need to skip it. 5/10

13 As Tall As Lions – hmmm, I like this – lots. Has a kinda 'soaring' epic quality to it. Is it supposed to stop that suddenly? Anyway, who are these people? Why do I not know them? Must investigate further. 9/10

14 Ikara Colt – too frenetic and 'shouty' for me. Maybe I'm getting old – maybe it just broke the mood. Dunno. 4/10

15 Future of the Left – WTF? Promptly skipped. 1/10

16 High Contrast – phew, I can breathe again. Liked this from the very beginning (before I'd even realised what the track was). The intro was very 'me' but I was happy enough even when it picked up pace and got more trippy. Cool stuff. 8/10

17 Errors – yeah, I like this. Inoffensive and I'd probably get more into it if I listened a few more times. Was kinda waiting for the vocals that never happened. 7/10

18 Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man – I know this well and Beth Gibbons can do little wrong as far as I'm concerned. Tentative and haunting, I think she's done stronger tracks that are more to my taste. Made me go and dig the album out again though – no bad thing at all. 7.5/10

19 Les Negresses Vertes – Bizarre, weird French stuff. Hmmm. 4/10

Overall – a great mix that I (mostly) enjoyed. Very soundtrack-esque. Highs for me were Breakestra and As Tall As Lions – both new to me and I'm gonna have to find out more. A few fav's that I knew I'd enjoy too. Lows: ermm, the French thing at the end, the Spanish (Portuguese!) Costas song, and The Mules. Oh, and I seriously thought you'd lost the plot with Future of the Left!!
