Niiiiiiiiiiice, super chilled out track that would feel right at home in a ganja farm. Loved it. 8/10

I thought it was Mark Ronson at the start :whistle: Tee Hee Hee Spanky. (This Missus Hated This One, Made Me Turn It Off lol) 6/10

Another track that is super chilled out with a Daniel Meriwether-esque voice over (apologies for the Ronson nods its my only sounding board for this type of music) 6.5/10

5. Oh My God - A Tribe Called Quest

The track i was most looking forward too beside Ray Charles. LOVED IT. Tastic. 9/10

6. What'd I Say - Ray Charles

Love it. Since the biopic a few year ago ive really started to get into Ray Charles and this is another fine example. 9/10

7. Carolina - Seu Jorge

2 words. Enrique Inglesias. Just awful. Sorry mate that was utter shite. I had to turn it off. I thought i had stumbled into a themed spanish restaurant. 2/10

8. Psychotic Reaction - The Count Five

The only song on the album that ive already heard. Quality slice of rockabilly action. Good times. However Dan Sartain and Vincent Vincent do it far better. 8/10

9. A House Is Not A Motel - Love

Im sure Love were amazing back in the day but i missed the boat and havent gotten into it since. Its okay i spose just aint my bag baby. 5/10

10. Stan The Gunman - Hank The Knife

Have been looking forward to this one :D Some more rockabilly pop action, more good times. 7/10

11. Polly-O - The Mules

Not a bad tune. Worth another listen. 7/10

12. Song For The Fields - Fields

Never heard anything by Fields before. Look forward to this. Im talking utter bollocks, ive just checked and ive actually seen these live a few years ago supporting Brakes and Editors. I remember them being all foreign and good looking with a gorgeous front woman/keyboardist. Liked this song too by the way, don't know if ive heard it before. 7/10

13. Song For Luna - As Tall As Lions

I think it was TPH that said earlier about him forgetting he was listening to music even when he was trying to concentrate. This song had the same effect on me. I just pissed off somewhere else for a while. The start of the Ikara Colt woke me up again. 4/10

14. At The Lodge - Ikara Colt

Well it opened well waking me up after the last song, but the fellas voice pissed me off and 'it transpires becomes resolute' is annoyingly pretentious even by my standards. 6/10

15. The Lord Hates A Coward - Future Of The Left

I really wanted to hate this and when i had to double take to pick out 'Pickled Onions' in the lyrics i lightened up and began to dislike it even more. It sounds like the wanky bollocks i used to listen to when i was a depressed little shite. Was told to turn it off again lol 5/10 for 'Pickled Onions'

16. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - High Contrast

MUCH BETTER! The perfect music for a cornetto advert at the start turns into a pill popping party. Lovely stuff. 7/10

17. Salut! France - Errors

Starts off very very strongly with the Hot Chip action, i expected a little speccy man to start warning me about breaking my face but then it calmed down all nice. 7/10

18. Mysteries - Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man

Looked forward to this too. As a fan of that other band she was in im pre programmed to like this and it was really good.

19. La Valse - Les Negresses Vertes

Attrocious ironic frenchie shite. I enjoyed it. 7/10

Im having a mission trying to catergorise these into genre!

Album Highlight - A Tribe Called Quest, Ray Charles and Beth Gibbons. All safe choices in my eyes.

Album Lowpoint - As Tall As Lions and that wanky Enrique Lazyarse song.

Overall: As obscure as can be expected having heard of very few of these bands i was hoping to be enlightened. Was ok just as was last time, most of this just aint my bag. 6/10

1. Bonobo- Days to Come

I'll admit, this one didn't grab me, but it wasn't bad either. Definitely listenable though so it gets a 6/10 for me.

2. Quantic- The Sound of Everything

Liked the funky, jazz feel to this one. Preferred it to the first track. 7/10

3. Spanky Wilson and the Quantic Soul Orchestra- Waiting For Your Touch

Again, this was very similar to the second track (I'm guessing them both involving Quantic would have something to do with it) and I quite liked it. 7/10

4. Breakestra- Hiding

Liked the beat going through this one, very smooth. The best one so far for me. 7.5/10

5. A Tribe Called Quest- Oh My God

Nice song here Fez, get's a solid 7/10 from me.

6. Ray Charles- What'd I Say

Good genre change here from a great soul artist. 6.5/10

7. Seu Jorge- Carolina

Personally didn't take to this one too much, but it wasn't unlistenable either. Got better as it went on. 6/10

8. The Count Five- Psychotic Reaction

Didn't do it for me unfortunately, just one I didn't really take to. 5.5/10

9. Love- A House Is Not A Motel

When I first heard the introductory 30 seconds I thought I wouldn't be impressed but it definitely got better as it went on. 6/10

1. Banobo.

Hmmm, Daggers. I'm not sure about Quentin Tarrantino. It's very soundtrack, I'd agree, the riff and beat is a perfect cruising-a-city-nightscape-in-a-car song. Fairly nice chill-out stuff, I wouldn't buy it but it was okay. 6/10.

2. Quantic.

Nice transitions and a fantastic beat. Very 'trendy-cool', sharp. A song for thick, black shades and ciggars. 7/10.

3. Spanky Wilson.

I tell you what this is. It's a Guy Ritchie soundtrack. Is there some James Brown coming up? 6.5/10.

4. Breakestra.

Another fantastic beat, I can see this becoming a theme. This also has an equally cool bassist. Funk isn't really my thing and the front-man wants to Jimi Hendrix; but that's okay. A lot of the tracks so far have been relatively predictable, but this seemed to go somewhere. Another 7/10.

5. A Tribe Called Quest.

Have we spoken about Quest before? I'm sure we have. Anyway, fantastic tune, the best on here so far. 9/10.

6. Ray Charles.

Another solid selection, but then he isn't one of the biggest R&B names of all time for nothing. I enjoy R&B and jazz, it's just not something I'd ever go out of my way to listen to when something else works. Again, solid just not really my cup of tea. 7/10.

7. Seu George.

Knockout Ned. :D Lifted itself away from the average, for me, one of my favourites so far. Just more body, more life in it than the rest. 8/10

8. The Count Five.

Couldn't make it's mind up what it wanted to be. I enjoyed the faster movements and tapped my foot along, not one of the songs I'd go back to. 6/10

9. Love.

Fantastic movement into the solo. Great song in general, really. Question being, would we have BRMC without Love? 8/10.

10. Hank the Knife.

*Twists, boogies, wiggles.* 8/10.

11. The Mules.

I thought I'd put Joe's compilation back on by accident and had to double check. Not really my thing, I liked the parts without vocals, the beat and riff were generally quite funky but otherwise a bit too 'scene' por moi. 6/10

12. Fields.

I liked the shift at the two minute point, the second half of the song was very listenable. 6.5/10.

13. As Tall As Lions.

Mmmmhhh. No. Again, I appreciated the crescendo and enjoyed the shift but it just lacked the power to keep me hooked. A little disappointing. 6/10.

14. Ikara Colt.

Sat eagerly through fourteen tracks waiting for this. LFF doesn't know what he's talking about, son, great tune. If "transpires becomes resolute" offended so much, the man clearly never got down to much At The Drive In / Mars Volta. They're far worse! (Exoskeletal junction at the railroad delayed?) My only problem with the Ikara Colt on record is just... well... it isn't live. 9/10.

15. Future of the Left.

Yeah. But t'aint Mclusky. :cry: Fantastic song though, far more my thing than Ray Charles. 9/10. (I'm thinking LFF and I aren't going to agree much musically.)

16. High Contrast.

I'm definitely liking the second half of this mixtape than the first, and it has nothing to do with the heavy Welsh influence. ;) Fairly solid bit of drum and base. Have you spent much time in Fabric? 8/10.

17. Errors.

Wasn't quite expecting a shift back to the easier listening stuff, but to me this was far more listenable than any jazz or soul record. I can pretty much hear half of my old halls of residence tutting at me from here. 8/10.

18. Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man.

When I stop crying into my readybreak I'll let you know (I had to turn this off.) 10/10.

19. Les Negresses Vertes.

lol okay now THIS you just put on to be pretentious. Smarmy twat. 7/10.

Overall: 8/10. I think the entire mix requires a certain mood and you were lucky to catch me in it. Generally I found the drum and bass and hip hop far more to my tastes than the jazz, r&b and soul stuff earlier on. I was a little surprised, I was expecting something really immensely pretentious when I saw Ray Charles on the list but I thought this was calm, dignified and nice to listen to. Took me back to the smell of grass, the taste of cheap alcohol and lounging around smokey, claustrophobic halls of residence rooms. Much appreciated, will certainly be listened to again.

Ahh this is getting better now. I'd heard a couple of As Tall As Lions tracks before and liked them and this one was no exception. Definitely one I'd listen to again. 7.5/10

14. Ikara Colt- At The Lodge

Not bad, but unfortunately forgot I was listening to it so didn't grab my attention enough obviously! 6/10

15. Future Of The Left- The Lord Hates a Coward

Very different to anything else on this CD, I thought it was OK, nothing more. 5.5/10

16. High Contrast- Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Good to have a bit of drum and bass in here. Thought it was a bit too long, but still a decent track. 6/10

17. Errors- Salut! France

I liked this one, had a bit more to it than the last track. Another one I'd listen to again. 7/10

18. Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man- Mysteries

Another welcome bit of acoustic-ness but I couldn't help but be slightly irritated by the female singer's voice. 5/10

19. Les Negresses Vertes- La Valse

I don't get it, I was expecting a great finale! This song just didn't do anything for me, sorry Fez! 3/10

Changed a few of my intial ratings because I felt I was being a little generous compared to what I actually thought. Overall there's a few songs I'm glad you put on here and I'd listen to again, and that's the whole point of this right? So thanks for that Fez.

Overall it gets a 6/10 from me. :thumbup:

And i actually liked At The Drive In back in the day. One Armed Scissor was in my top 10 songs ever for a while. I never took to the Mars Volta much though.

I was writing a post as I listened. I'm on track 15 now but I accidentally just refreshed. ARGH.

I've stopped on 16, which I was really enjoying. I hated 15. I liked 2, 6 and 8-14.

The Seu Jorge track disappointed me cos I thought it'd be like his stuff on The Life Aquatic.

Yes. The second half of the mix is pretty different, I think you'll enjoy it far more than the first.

Sometime ago a Conservative MP stood on a train station platform, he was approached by a furtive figure. The man stood uneasily looking from side to side, his sweaty palms clutching a brown envelope. An exchange was made, two court cases ensued and Jeffrey Archer went to prison where he (unfortunately) did not meet with an untimely demise resulting from a fork being lodged into his ocular cavity.

During the first court case, the judge referred to the wife of the prossie-shagging, mendacious and smug Thatcher-loving git as fragrant. This song too is very fragrant.

This style of funk reminds me of the nightclub I used to go to at Souldrop, some God-forsaken village between Rushden and Bedford. I never understood why they built a nightclub in the middle of nowhere nor why we had to go there on weekends. I never liked the music and I never so much as spoke to a girl let alone have sex with one. I blamed the music directly for my lack of sex with girls.

Over the intervening 20 years I have had consensual sex on at least one occasion and firmly believe that she was a woman. I have forgiven Funk and now believe that it offers something as long as it is not wearing a stupid hat.

The vocals are weak, which is a shame as you need something more punchy to carry this song. On the other hand, I like the name Spanky. I like it so much that I am now demanding everyone calls me Spanky Dave. This is going to cause a problem in Primary schools but I just don’t care. I don’t care because I’m Spanky Dave.

I like horns. I like horns that build. If someone could teach the deer at Bradgate Park to construct something using box girders then I would be really over the moon.

This takes me back to the early 1993 when this sound gave us a break from getting all angry to the Seattle sound. It was always “a good thing”, very Definition of Sound.

A few years back I got pulled by a cop just after I crested a bridge over the Mississippi. I had lost myself in the glory of a day where the sun shone, a paddle steamer was passing underneath me and Ray was screaming from the car speakers. I thought to myself, this day is so good I’m going to say ‘fook the law!’ I did, and went 3 miles an hour over the speed limit. I now know how Rodney King felt…only substituting a racist duffing up for a good stiff talking to. Which I deserved.

But I’m not all of a quandary, the judge simply doesn’t know if his love will remain unrequited – he has fear to his fuzziness. Not me. I’m listening to an uplifting song.

Quiet loud quiet done in the style of Mark E Smith joins the Buzzcocks (listen to “Waiting for the train” and any Fall song). It’s inoffensive. Unlike Thatcher’s claim to be the party of the family and family values. Pfft. It’s no surprise that eventually Labour reformed themselves.

I have to laugh. It’s like I planned this review to flow seamlessly. willy puller Archer having a fork thrust into his eye in a hostel causing Labour to reform as the new future of the left…

I like the film of the same name, so many don’t but I do. Is this what young people call trip-hop? It doesn’t matter if it is. Or isn’t. I like it. When I play lovely tunes like this in the car my wife looks at me. She looks at me as though I have just confessed to giving a prostitute a wedge of money and will she stand by me through the media storm and lie in court. She looks at me like the cop did when I told him that I can drive any damn how I like because I am British. You want future of the bloody left? That’s Britishness for you Gordon Brown. You want Primary school children doing that all over America? Do You?

Of course not. Get them to take drugs and listen to this song instead.

I’ve grown up with the synthesiser. My parents adopted him when he was taken from Brian Eno by Social Services. We used to cuddle on the bed near the radiator during cold wintery evenings. I lost touch with him when he went off to be in The Human League and I became Spanky Dave. I’m delighted he appears to be doing so well for himself and I will now make the effort to check out what else Errors have done.

1 Bonobo - Just about exactly where I am at musically at the minute going back and getting back into my Ninja Tunes and Mo'wax stuff big time so.... :thumbup: good stuff

2 Quantic - You can't beat a bit of Quanitc he has produced some outstanding tunes so another :thumbup:

3 Quantic/Spanky Wilson - not as impressed as above as not sure about the vocals haven't got this Quanitc album so :dunno:

4 Breakstra - Some nice beats and I think I will be checking these out on a more indepth level so :thumbup:

5 A Tribe Called Quest - well what can you say you really can't argue with the tribe, if only Hip Hop today was as inovative as The Tribe back in the day instead of this Soulja Boy shite :thumbup::thumbup:

6 Ray Charles a legend no doubt and not someone I would usually seek out but in the context of an eclectic mix album works well

17 Errors - very nice song would ideally like some vocals but you can't have everything.

18 Beth Gibbons - Nice chilled out finishing song before it goes all crazy and French for about a minute... :)

Overall

very very nice eclectic mix just as I like them, including songs that you wouldn't normally listen to but work very well together as a whole as it should be so would give it 5 out of 5 as I may well keep this mix as it is and listen to it again!!

Loving the Tru Thoughts sound at the minute and know this song well. Another fantastic tune, an excellent one to follow Bonobo.

This is all flowing very well... A real 70's funk feel to this track. Not heard it before but I'll be listening again. Probably my favourite record label with Ninja Tune at the minute.

Fez recommended these to me awhile ago but this is the first time I've heard one of their songs. Another nice slab of funky soul. Shame I'm sitting in my bedroom on a Tuesday night and not out dancing like a fool to this. What's the album called?!

Not my thing. At least it's original though. Like I alluded to in my review of Joe's it always a positive thing to hear music you've never heard before even if you don't go back to it. Polite way of saying - not great! Hehe.

12. Song For The Fields - Fields

A cut above a lot of guitar based music but again straying into areas I rarely venture. Decent.

13. Song For Luna - As Tall As Lions

Reminded just a little bit of Stateless which can only be a good thing. I think it's the drums that do it. Yeah I really like this actually. Builds up very pleasingly before a nice chilled ending.

14. At The Lodge - Ikara Colt

Not too keen to be honest. His voice annoys me for some reason. Bit hectic.

15. The Lord Hates A Coward - Future Of The Left

Scary screaming man. Did an Emo sneak into your bedroom and plant this in your mix Fez? "Violence solves everything" - hmmm...

16. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - High Contrast

Yes yes yes. High Contrast has been untouchable for awhile. Very very good tune. Surprised I haven't heard this out clubbing. Maybe I have. F**k knows, all I do know is this is a tune and a half.

17. Salut! France - Errors

Was looking forward to this one. Could do with being a little more heavyweight in the drums I reckon but yeah I like it. Bit if an Underworld feel to it in a way. Sounds good when the bass kicks in after a couple of minutes. Actually come to think of it this is a bit like Aphex Twin. Good tune.

18. Mysteries - Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man

Beth Gibbons makes me ejaculate.

19. La Valse - Les Negresses Vertes

Haha. My girlfriend loves the French. I think it might have rubbed off on me a little. This was funny and rather enjoyable. Nice finish!

Overall

The man has taste. Even the middle section of stuff I would rarely listen to got me interested. Only criticism would be that it maybe needed a bit more umph at times. Maybe another drum n bass tune or some electro, I know you like that shit!

Overall though very high quality. Nothing less than expected.
