Ric Flair Posted 23 March 2005 Posted 23 March 2005 I can't understand what's happening with Canero, it's one of the strangest things ever. Levein seems an honest man and tells us everything we need to know, but there's definately something not quite right with Canero. Canero was quality last season when he played and I remember his debut for Scotland where he came on and played behind the strikers and he was excellent. It's so frustrating that he's not getting a look in. The problem is we've signed Maybury who's brilliant and we've got Stearman who i'm desperate to see succeed. It's a shame, I think if he'd stayed injury free we would have seen the best right back/winger in the league this season. I hope he's put out of his misery and allowed to leave if Levein doesn't want him as although I don't like seeing good players leave this club, I feel we owe it to him. Can't Mad Biker shed any light? I find it really odd, you'd think Levein would love to team up with one of the most promising players from back home. At 23, surely Canero has something to offer???

Why do I say this, well you will notice that it is always (or nearly) Canero who is the only senior player when there is a game involving many Academy players. I know he probably relishes the prospect of playing in the same team as the mighty Chambo , but does it also mean that he is as close to getting in the First team as Chambo. I think we should be told.

I mean if Levein has managed to get rid of the likes of Benjamin, Makin, Scowcroft, Keown and Pressman you'd think he'd easily be able to dispose of Canero. There would be plenty of takers back up north, i'd even hazard a guess we could get a fee. Celtic wanted him for **** sake! Perhaps we could use him as bait in a deal to bring Webster here from Hearts or Diamond from Aberdeen. We paid £250,000 for him but that was only because his contract was expiring, he was rated at a £1,000,000 not that long ago. The nail in the coffin was that Makin was got rid of and that Levein felt it was necessary to bring another right back in (Kenton) it's not as if Canero can't play in other positions, infact he can play almost anywhere. After his debut for Scotland, i'd be interested to see him in a Keiron Dyer role that he plays at Newcastle. The Canero sage is the only criticism I have of Levein, I think we deserve to know the score.
Guest Posted 23 March 2005 Posted 23 March 2005 We've been talking about this, and it is strange. He was in the squad for the Westerby Cup last night, again. It can't be that he isn't match fit, surely? Has he done something? Why won't someone tell us?

Random Burglar Posted 23 March 2005 Posted 23 March 2005 Levein should put him straight in the 1st team if hes fit!! Hes a sensible guy he should see what Canero has to offer!! There must b another reason!!
Louise Posted 23 March 2005 Posted 23 March 2005 Apparently he's the opposite of a ghost and that's the problem I think the media have to take some blame for it really, Levein can only talk about things he's asked about and most people who interview him are so inept they have no idea of any player's names outside the 20 that play regularly, so no-one ever asks about Canero. (or of course its a great big cover up to make us forget about him so we can offload in the summer without anyone noticing )

I think he's better than Kenton and can play about as many roles.

I rated Kenton before he came here and although he's been quite steady he isn't any better than Canero and he certainly isn't better than Maybury or Stearman.
breadandcheese Posted 23 March 2005 Posted 23 March 2005 I saw Canero at the Forest game and posted up on here then. He came across as a genuinely decent guy. He wasn't in anyway arrogant or anything like that. I asked him whether he was near the first team, and what was going on? He basically said that he wasn't too sure. He had apparently spoken to Levein but hadn't really got an answer. He said he wants to speak to Levein further, simply to know whether he is in the long-term plans. At the end of the day, he wants to know if he has a future here because he wants first-team football. I thought it was refreshing to talk to a player who was genuinely concerned about first-team football and not so much about sticking it out for money. I have to agree with the sentiments shared here. I think Kenton is a decent player, but I do not see what he offers that Canero can't. The times I have seen Canero play, I have always been impressed with his commitment and he does not seem too short on ability either.

Can anyone else shed any light?
Scarby Posted 23 March 2005 Posted 23 March 2005 Maybe he had an injury which we were not told about and this cup game was one to get peter back to match fitness
Tomassi Posted 23 March 2005 Posted 23 March 2005 maybe with gillespie possibly leaving next season he is waiting to play him then??
Ric Flair Posted 23 March 2005 Author Posted 23 March 2005 Maybe he had an injury which we were not told about and this cup game was one to get peter back to match fitness 82193 Wake up. That isn't the reason at all. I would possibly agree with you if this was the first time it had happened, but he played in the westerby cup a couple of months ago aswell. Also he often plays for the reserves as the only first team player, which isn't a problem if he'd come back from an injury but he's been fit for 3 months.

Anyway something needs to be said by the coaching staff, it's the least Canero, and the fans, deserve. I believe Canero started in Levein's first 3 games aswell, i remember he was very impressive against Cov aswell, linking up with Gillespie. Can't remember if he got injured after that but Makin's form for the reserves got him a recall apparantely.
Anish Posted 23 March 2005 Posted 23 March 2005 Hoof, I agree with you completely. I made my views clear in the Westerby Cup thread: It's an absolute disgrace that Canero is the only player over 21 playing. It is patently obvious for all to see that he is not part of Levein's plans (whether rightly or wrongly) but to humiliate him by making him play with the kids is piss poor management. We might as well terminate his contract and pay him compensation because we are simply denying another youngster the chance to play in Canero's position - somebody that MAY break through into the first team squad. I'm sure Canero is gutted by Levein's decisions but it's doing nobody any good by keeping him here when he has no future. I feel sorry for the lad, he can't afford to resign from the club and it's obvious that the management don't rate him...so why can't they do a deal like they did with Scowy/Benji? 81844 All this secrecy by LCFC (yet again) is an insult to the fans and this cover up about injuries/match fitness is unfair on Canero. It's just going to put off any other clubs that might be interested and prevent Canero being given a chance to get some regular football under his belt.
Shauno45 Posted 23 March 2005 Posted 23 March 2005 should sing his name at the next home game see what levein does about it. He looked promising last season whats goin on...

He didn't look overweight or unfit at the Forest game. Unless he's gone on a 72-hour curry marathon repeatedly over the last few weeks, he is not overweight. As Hoof said, he's played in a number of games now so must be at match fitness by now. I guess Levein just doesn't rate him.
Ikon_Klow Posted 24 March 2005 Posted 24 March 2005 I heard that he is mentally not strong enough. Apparently he is convinced that he has an injury even though the scans and Docs can't find anything wrong. It is a case of building up his confidence and giving him back his belief in his body.
Jonbluefox9 Posted 24 March 2005 Posted 24 March 2005 Canero was training with the first team today. I don't think he's had a fall out with Levein because he would be left to train with the youth team or something along those lines. The most likely reason for him not getting a look in is because he's not as good as Kenton, Maybury or even Stearman.
davieG Posted 29 March 2005 Posted 29 March 2005 I sent this email to Peter Jones on 24th March Hope you are well. Is there any chance of letting us know what the situation is regarding Peter Canero, he seems to be playing for the reserves but can't make it to the subs bench or the first team. Is there any particular reason for this or is it a secret - CL never mentions him in his injury reports. Got this reply today Thank you for your e mail. Peter is part of the first team squad and is fighting back to full fitness after a number of injuries. He is training and would no doubt hope to be part of the squad for the up and coming matches. I am not able to add anything else. Best wishes Peter Jones Supporter Relations Manager 0116 229 4527 Seems ok except for "I am not able to add anything else. " which makes it sound like there are other reasons but he's not saying
Ricey Posted 29 March 2005 Posted 29 March 2005 It's a shame having a player like Canero in our squad but not featuring. I remember how excited I was at the end of last season after seeing him play a number of times. He is a good player, I think he deserves a chance but with Maybury, Kenton and Stearman here I doubt he will get that chance.
