i was looking at getting a new one, but decided i didn't have room, can't recommend anything really, it differs massively depending what sort of thing you want... if you just want a basic thing you might be ok, but if you want weighted keys and realistic instrument sounds you'll struggle on that budget...

the store that used to be carlsbro down from sainsbury's in town has a pretty good range if you're in leicester, best go play, see what feels good...

no idea, sorry :dunno:

According to people at my college I should get weighted keys.

Might have to stretch the budget a bit then.

it really depends what level you want to play at, and what you want get from it.

you can get just a stage keyboard or midi keyboard with no sound bank and connect it to a lap top or pc and use the inbuilt sounds on your computer, which will save you money, but can be a bit of a fuss.

what are you planning to do with it?

I'm pretty much a total beginner except for a few things like Triads etc.

But I'm actually going to leave it til Crimbo and save up a few hundred to put towards it.

Anyone got any recomendations on a cheap keyboard?

Hoping to teach myself how to play it, so would have to be something aimed at beginners, brand new or second hand isnt really an issue... only price.

So recomendations of what to look for, or where to look?

:)

I have a Yamaha P70 which is £500 so that's probably a bit much. :P

But whatever you get, for Christ's sake get weighted keys! Please!

Weighted keys? On a better keyboard, the keys are more like those on a proper piano. If you've ever played a keyboard and a piano (which I'm sure you would have), you'd know there's a massive difference in the keys. It's just like that really.

Basically you can put your fingers under non-weighted keys. Also, they sound shite.

Oh cheers for that info, and cheers Joe aswell.

I forgot to mention that I shall be wanting to hook the leyboard upto the computer, whether that makes any difference on the type of keyboard I should be looking at or not...

with regard to weighted keys, the sound is not directly effected by the weighting, other than you can vary the velocity (volume) of the note, but you can get this on most keyboards these days and will be called something like 'touch'

the real benefit of weighted keys is in the performance. the weighting gives you resistance and response, recreating the feel of a real piano.

the sound tends to be better on this kind of keyboard as they tend to be used by people who take their playing more seriously, all of which explains the pricing.

if you are just using a keyboard to make chords or electronic stuff you can probably live without weighting, but definitely get touch sensitive velocity.
