MikeyT Posted 12 June 2008 Posted 12 June 2008 http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11966_3678920,00.html Scolari to become Blues boss Chelsea confirm Brazilian will replace Grant from July Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will become the new Chelsea manager on 1st July. Scolari, who is currently masterminding Portugal's Euro 2008 challenge, has accepted an offer to replace Avram Grant at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have confirmed that the Brazilian World-Cup winning coach will take charge after the European Championship. "Chelsea Football Club is delighted to confirm that Luiz Felipe Scolari will be the club's new manager from July 1, 2008," read a club statement. Outstanding choice "Felipe has great qualities. He is one of the world's top coaches with a record of success at country and club level, he gets the best out of a talented squad of players and his ambitions and expectations match ours. "He was the outstanding choice. "Out of respect for his current role as Head Coach of the Portuguese national team, and to ensure minimum disruption to this work, there will be no further comment from Chelsea FC nor from Felipe about his new role until his employment with us commences." Since sacking Grant last month, Chelsea had been linked with a string of high-profile coaches across the continent. Carlo Ancelotti had appeared to be the favourite for the role before confirming his intention to stay in the Milan hot seat. Former Blues striker Mark Hughes was also understood to have been a contender before opting to leave Blackburn Rovers for Manchester City. Other names rumoured to have been in the frame included Guus Hiddink, Sven Goran Eriksson, Roberto Mancini, Frank Rijkaard and Luciano Spalletti. Winning pedigree Scolari has yet to coach at club level in Europe, but won the Copa Libertadores during stints in charge of Gremio and Palmeiras. He led Brazil to World Cup success in 2002 before later taking on the Portugal job and leading the host nation to the final of Euro 2004. The 59-year-old had been in the running to replace Eriksson as England coach in 2006 before deciding to stay with Portugal. His contract with the Portuguese Football Federation expires after Euro 2008 and he will now embark on a new adventure in the Premier League with Chelsea.
Uncle Albert Posted 12 June 2008 Posted 12 June 2008 Carvalho will now certainly stay. This appointment may see Lamps move to Inter, especilly if Deco is brought in.
Ric Flair Posted 12 June 2008 Posted 12 June 2008 Deco and Moutinho to Chelsea if Lampard moves on. Decent appointment, but thought Mancini had it nailed on to be honest.
lavrentis Posted 12 June 2008 Posted 12 June 2008 Deco and Moutinho to Chelsea if Lampard moves on. Decent appointment, but thought Mancini had it nailed on to be honest. Mancini thought Leicester would be better.
Father Ted Posted 12 June 2008 Posted 12 June 2008 Great choice but tbh Mancini would have been a better appointment.
Simi Posted 12 June 2008 Posted 12 June 2008 Cracking appointment for me.Apart from he doesn't speak any English yet. Ah well, worked for the Tinkerman. It's a myth. He does speak English. Not sure about this at all. I keep saying shite pundits saying "He's succesful at both club and country". No he isn't. What's he achieved at club level? **** all. Can see this going tits up for them. Hopefully.

Tilley Posted 12 June 2008 Posted 12 June 2008 Fantastic international manager, Slightly unproven at club level, apart from a few trophies in South America, It's a gamble if you ask me.
Simi Posted 12 June 2008 Posted 12 June 2008 Well he's won the Copa Libertadores twice, so not exactly **** all. Sorry, the South American Champs League sort of thing. I'm sure that compares to the Prem!!
lildave3 Posted 12 June 2008 Posted 12 June 2008 Sorry, the South American Champs League sort of thing. I'm sure that compares to the Prem!! Well if he's only managed in South America, that's the only place he can win things.
Simi Posted 12 June 2008 Posted 12 June 2008 Well if he's only managed in South America, that's the only place he can win things. You can be as petty as you want mate. The fact is, he is not proven at club level with a half decent team.
lildave3 Posted 12 June 2008 Posted 12 June 2008 You can be as petty as you want mate. The fact is, he is not proven at club level with a half decent team. That's not what you said though. You were denying he's been succesful for club and country and that he's done **** all at club level.
Simi Posted 12 June 2008 Posted 12 June 2008 That's not what you said though. You were denying he's been succesful for club and country and that he's done **** all at club level. Trying to claim that some South American cup counts as something when in line for the Chelsea job is ridiculous! Yes, he may of won the trophy a couple of times but it's not on par with some of the rewards that Mancini and the like have done is it?
purpleronnie Posted 12 June 2008 Posted 12 June 2008 It's possible, but i'm not expecting it tbh. Me neither, but I think it would be good if more english players go abroad.

No, obviously the Italian league is superior to the Brazilian league. But it does count for something, because it still means he's been a success wherever he's been.
Matt Posted 15 June 2008 Posted 15 June 2008 Luiz Felipe Scolari: I went for the moneyPortugal coach says his main motivation for accepting Chelsea job was financial and denies damaging country's campaign LUIZ FELIPE SCOLARI last night explained his reasons for taking the Chelsea manager’s job for the first time. The Portugal coach, whose side were the first to qualify for the Euro 2008 quarter-finals, said his main motivation for accepting had been financial. He also defended himself against charges that the news of his appointment, made on Wednesday night, would disrupt the country’s campaign. Scolari, who is believed to have been offered a salary of £5.5m a year in contrast to the annual £1.75m he earns with Portugal, said he had wanted to stay but that his current employers had been unable to match the Chelsea deal. “I am 59, will soon turn 60, and I don’t want to work until 70 as a technician. I want to work for four or five more years and then retire. We wanted a similar proposal but none of them won [out]. So I was told I was free to negotiate with others. You only get one opportunity like this and I had to take it.” Asked about his fiery reputation, he said: “You have to ask my wife, she knows more than I do. Get in touch with her. I like to play, I like to make jokes and I like to work with my players in a good atmosphere. I feel comfortable anywhere in the world because I can establish good relationships with people around me. I don’t like high society, I’m not someone who likes to go to parties and socialise, I’m shy. I speak English with my players. I speak German, Italian, Spanish, you name it. There is only one language in football.” We all know money is normally at the centre of a move, but I don't think i'd be to happy if a Leicester manager or player came out a publically announced "Yeah I only came for the decent wages" Hahahaha...I hope he takes the piss out of Chelsea.

Seems he'll carry on their traditions. Reading in this mornings papers that he openly admits to cheating.
