Sods Posted 21 June 2008 Posted 21 June 2008 I'm glad the Russians won tonight, it was thoroughly deserved. I don't think anybody can dispute that. It was just such a good team performance. They should really have won it within the 90 minutes but even after Holland scored they didn't give up, nor did they play for the draw. I respect them for that. As an aside, Arshavin is surely destined for the Premiership. Arsenal would be a fantastic destination for both him and the club and I hope to see him much more next season. As for the Dutch, it's the classic "start too well and fall short". Fantastic in the group stages, won their group very comfortably against tough oppsition but looked drab and disorganised tonight. Another failure for the Dutch in a major tournament. Arshavin looked imense, a couple others of them did as well. Hopefully he joins a team I enjoy in the Premiership rather then the United, Liverpool or Chelsea. Arsenal would be the obvious choice, he was just outstanding tonight.
Fox You Forest Posted 21 June 2008 Posted 21 June 2008 I had the right scoreline but backed the wrong team. Better change flag again.
dandannieldanok Posted 21 June 2008 Posted 21 June 2008 Well done Russia, brilliant performance, deserved to win the game in 90 minutes never mind 120. Holland were compltetly abject. Also, although it's my personal opinion that managers are portrayed as both complete idiots or messiahs to a ridiculous extent in the media, I think it's fair to say Hiddink is a mastermind and Van Basten is too naive and too quick to make his changes (tonight anyway).
Thracian Posted 21 June 2008 Posted 21 June 2008 I hope Oakley, Weso and Clemence were watching! Some good examples tonight of midfielders breaking at speed, driving hard into the box and having a crack at goal from distance. Interesting to hear Russia are the youngest team in the competition because the Dutch defence offered the nearest thing to surrender that I can remember seeing from a leading nation come extra time.
Jonezy Posted 21 June 2008 Posted 21 June 2008 I love Holland, I really do. My grandfather was dutch, their shirts are cool and they normally play some nice football. But tonight the Gus Hiddink inspired Russians gave Holland a lesson! Some of that movement were unearthly.... The way that guy, who scored the 2-1 goal just came bursting into the box when the chance looked wasted and the dutch defenders thought the situation was under control, was the sign of a team that believes. Really really hope the Russians can keep this up and win the tournament.
davieG Posted 22 June 2008 Posted 22 June 2008 I see Hiddink had no qualms about his celebration after beating his home country.
Sparky Posted 22 June 2008 Posted 22 June 2008 still got my fiver each way on russia since before the tournament so hoping for a shock tonight And so the fiver each way is still alive ! Win 1 more and the guarenteed a pay out
StroudFox Posted 22 June 2008 Posted 22 June 2008 Ched's name change jinx strikes again... I was thinking the same thing! Who is he going to jinx next!
James. Posted 22 June 2008 Posted 22 June 2008  I blame Ched. Guess I'm Orange 'til mid-late June now instead.
Simi Posted 22 June 2008 Posted 22 June 2008  I blame Ched. Guess I'm Orange 'til mid-late June now instead. I blame myself as well, everytime I change it seems that the team loses the next match. Just watched the highlights, Russia looked devastating.
Ultra Posted 22 June 2008 Posted 22 June 2008 I see Hiddink had no qualms about his celebration after beating his home country. Why should he? He's a professional paid to do a job. National allegiance shouldn't be a factor. Maybe Capello will prove this when we beat Italy in the 2010 World Cup..

I like this comment Thrac! I am expecting Clemence to be Arshavin next season.... I do not want to be let down!!! As for last nights game, what else can i say that has not been said already!! Arshavin is bloody class, the Russian team play some nice stuff, say what you like about Hiddink, what a fantastic coach he is!!

I wasn't saying he should or shouldn't - It was a comment made in the light of the Podolski debate and how he didn't celebrate his goal against Poland
syston_fox Posted 22 June 2008 Posted 22 June 2008 And so the fiver each way is still alive ! Win 1 more and the guarenteed a pay out Ive backed the russians from the start but never put any money on them
Finnegan Posted 22 June 2008 Posted 22 June 2008 Arshavin really does have a face you want to slap, mind.
Darkzzz_ Posted 22 June 2008 Posted 22 June 2008 Arshavin really does have a face you want to slap, mind. There has got to be a downside, he can't have it all!! He looks cheeky doesn't he!
