If we're playing one of them at left-back, I hope it isn't Chambers. We've messed him about enough already.

Yup. Reckon Chambers would be the best RB in this division, but my worry is concerning whether or not he'll be played. Have to admire his patience having been punted around.

A young lad with potential and something to prove.

As much as I'd agree with that 99 times out of 100, considering we'll almost certainly lose him again at the end of the season, especially if he does start to realise his potential, i don't see it as particularly important. So long as he's good enough already and not creaking and immobile like, say, Clapham, I'm fine.

bang on, unless we have a fee agreed with Arsenal in advance this could be another Fulop situation, we want the player, the player wants to stay but his club decide to be pricks about the fee

Tbh, competition for place in the first 11 will do all the players good. If they don't have the attitude to fight for a place, they'll have to sit on the bench, simple as. End of the day, whats best for the club is more important than whats best for a single player. If Gilbert can perform better than Chambers on the right, then why start Chambers?

I do hope we have learned from that actually. If we go up this season and he likes it here there's no reason we couldn't/wouldn't sign him.
