tbf Posted 7 August 2008 Posted 7 August 2008 Saturday morning, I get up early, put on my lucky Leicester socks, and watch kid's TV until football focus comes on. Mum's done our lunch early so Dad and I can get off to the game, so having got that down us we get into the car and drive to Leicester. It's not far down the motorway but already the excitement is getting to you. My scarf waves out the window as we bomb along the road. We try to spot as many teams' scarves as we can, going along the M1. We park at the Holiday Inn and walk the rest of the way to the ground. At first there are only a couple of other supporters wearing blue, but as we get closer, there are more and more of them. You've never seen them before but you already feel like you know them. Dad gives me money to go and get a programme. We walk round the street trying to find the right turnstile, then hike up the steps to our seat, and what a seat it is!! Top of the double-decker, "corporates" to the left in the Carling stand, away fans to the right in the shed. People smoking all round before kick-off, the smell of pies fills the air. The stand fills up as the team sheet is read out over the tannoy. Lulu sings, "You know you make me wanna shout!" and you know kick-off can't be far away. The Foxy Ladies do their little show while Filbert entertains the little 'uns. Post-horn gallop comes on, and I stand on my seat to see over everyone's heads. As the players come out I throw up a finely torn copy of last week's Mercury, my fingers are still black from ripping it up this morning. The teams take their positions on the field, the whistle goes and they're off!! "Come on Leicester!" flashes up on the dot-matrix score board, and the crowd roars behind the team. I miss those days…
JoeyB Posted 7 August 2008 Posted 7 August 2008 Dont we all dont we all I miss the days when we used to have thrilling 3-3 draws with arsenal

I miss those days… Ah nostalgia, I miss those days too! Wish it was still like that now, always felt so much more sanitised since we moved - hasn't helped that the football's generally been shocking too.

Ultra Posted 7 August 2008 Posted 7 August 2008 filbert street. now there was a ground with atmosphere in the right places, a real kop too!! Yeah, too bad most fans nowadays prefer to watch their games from stands rather than sheds..
Corky Posted 7 August 2008 Posted 7 August 2008 They were great days, but we have to move on. I'm sure at some point we will grow to love Filbert Way just as much.
Ilkeston_Fox Posted 7 August 2008 Posted 7 August 2008 Yep, i work in Nottingham with lots of forest and derby fans and both group of fans agree that Filbert Street was their favourite away day, the atmosphere was intense and the banter was something else - a proper football game. Hope they come back soon.

Hope they come back soon. ... whilst I too loved the old Fibert Street ground, having grown up living next to it as kid and teeneager, I have to agree with Corky, we had to choose a time to move on and expand and the Walkers is a truly excellent stadium ... but it's us the bawling and screaming fans that can make it a great 'buzzing' atmospheric experience, and my lad (not really knowing the old ground as he was too young) has already taken to the Walkers with the passion that I had for Filbert Street all those years ago Now I'm sure we're all going to finally start enjoying the football experience again this season (winning helps a lot) after years of disappointments and frustration ... and the atmosphere will be great once more ... C'mon City ...
Corky Posted 8 August 2008 Posted 8 August 2008 One thing I would like to return is the Birch going round the pitch at the home match before Christmas And the PA man from Filbert St. Miles better than the idiot we have now.
Sooper Steve's shin Posted 8 August 2008 Posted 8 August 2008 Ah, I miss the tight squeeze of the seats in the old Members Stand... the restricted views... the people standing on the top deck of the Double Decker stand when the ball came close to the goal... not being able to see... the embarassment of seeing our stadium on TV... the envy of other clubs moving into new stadia... the thoughts that one day we might get that new stadium... even our manager joking about leading new players out of the main stand backwards so they didn't see the East Stand... Let's face it, Filbo was getting to be a bit of a joke. The facilities were terrible for a modern-day Premiership club (as we were then) and I don't think at the time that anyone would have turned down a new stadium given the choice. Don't get me wrong, I have fantastic memories of the old place and of course we should remember those. But anyone who wishes we were still in the old dump should get a grip. There were some nights with good atmosphere, but they happened to coincide with some good times. We've not had a lot to cheer about since moving to the Walkers (especially over the last few seasons) but at least we have a decent place to call home and (hopefully) the prospect of brighter times ahead.

Quite right.

Aye. spot on I used to love sitting in the old east stand, block right next to the away fans, was fooking wicked. But, growing as a club means growing the stadium, which just couldn't be done there.
ASH17LCFC Posted 8 August 2008 Posted 8 August 2008 I miss walking to the kop and climbing what seemed a over last amount of stairs and coming up into just a prue amount of noise. Was also great with the away fans sitting in the east stand. The best thing was being so near the pitch though, i remember when some Red Star player dived and my dad lobbed his chewie and hit him smack bang in the face

UrbanFox Posted 8 August 2008 Posted 8 August 2008 I think the way we have played at the Walkers has something to do with us not likeing it as much as the old ground. the atmosphere at filbo in the kop was great, but i think that first season at the Walkers when we went up was a crackin atmosphere at times like after that Tommy Wright goal that near enough sent us up againt forest and i will never forget the brighton game were we went up, chanting were going up in 8 mins in between the mexican wave. hopefully them good times will return!!!
