David Guiza Posted 11 August 2008 Posted 11 August 2008 Has anyone else seen this story ? Former Manchester United player Ben Collet has recieved 4.5m in compensation for a career ending tackle http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7553678.stm
Simi Posted 11 August 2008 Posted 11 August 2008 Don't fully understand this. How can you judge the amount of money given? That seems a ridiculous amount for an unproven footballer who was surely only on a scholars contract.

Why would a judge argue with Sir Alex Ferguson when he says they would have offered the lad a 3 year contract. it is not unreasonable to think he might have earned £5k a week till he was 35 given his standing in the Man U Reserves.

Thats what i was thinking , apparently Sir Alex Ferguson described him as an " outstanding tallent " but it was 5 years ago making him 18 as i think it said he's 23 now so how can you judge what is the right amount of compensation for that

I'm sure there are many, many more that have been in his posistion and are now second fiddle at somewhere like Oldham. Although I'm not begruding him the money, just seems a lot. Who pays the compo? The compensation will be paid by Middlesbrough's insurers.

BoneHead. Posted 11 August 2008 Posted 11 August 2008 Alot of money when at 18 he could still have gone to college and then university and make a new career for himself. Now after this payout he never has to work again, seems like he got it easy for me.
Bryn Posted 11 August 2008 Posted 11 August 2008 Past loss of earnings set to about £450k would have done, IMO.
Guest Posted 11 August 2008 Posted 11 August 2008 I am so disgusted by this decision. I know that the other guy has accepted responsibility and he should pay in some way for his negligence. But the laws are there to compensate for losses. I can understand if the guy was not able to work ever again, or if he needed to pay for care or whatever. This is acceptable. I do find the fact that someone has gone from the potential of earning a lot of money to having to go out and do what the rest of us muppets do week in, week out, nowhere near the requirement for such a huge compensatory pay out. FFS, the guy is about to go off to Uni, so it's not like he doesn't have alternative means of sustaining himself. The really sad thing for me is that it is the insurers who will pay out. This means ultimately it will be you, me and every other bugger who sees their insurance policies increase every year as the compensation culture of this country slowly gets out of hand. Ben Collett - you really do make me sick.

TBH, I think around £500k should have been handed out. He could pay off his house any debts and still have money left over and he can get a job like most of us!
Tevez Posted 11 August 2008 Posted 11 August 2008 Why has this taken 5 years? Recieving Compenstation can normally take this long.
Head Honcho Posted 11 August 2008 Posted 11 August 2008 £4.5 million is the least amount he will recieve. Ironically Gary Smith has been struggling with injuries big time and may well be out of professional football by 2010

The Reverend Posted 12 August 2008 Posted 12 August 2008 It's bollocks really, i mean you can say a player will turn out to be a decent player, just like we did with people like Fran Jeffers, but it doesnt mean they will turn out to be brilliant players (like Jeffers didnt), and earn all this money. Its rubbish. And as others have said, hes not dumb, hes got on a university course, i bet his parents are filthy rich, its just rubbish really.
