Father Ted Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 Why is he being played on the right wing? Something in his contract saying he has to play? That's all I can think of. Especially if Gradel is fit, even then put Adams on the wing instead if Gradel is not fit, Dickov is NOT a winger, he IS a striker. He scores goals, he doesn't create them! Thoughts?
Uncle Albert Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 As long as we are winning then I am not to fussed.

Thoughts? Gradel was more effective coming off the bench at Fulham? It didn't make sense to me and the only time he was effective was when he was playing off Howard and dropping in the whole, nothing to note from him playing wide. I think it'll take a lot to break Howard and Fryatt up at the moment, with Mandaric at the helm I feel Pearson is obliged to keep Dickov around the team.
20mj08 Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 i agree with ched , its got to be otherwise maxi would be on from the start the only other thought in my head was fitness ... testing him on the wing to pick his fitness up but i havent seen much of late what shows he needs to improve his fitness
maddog Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 With us playing so well id play 4-3-3 for the home games. Gradel Dyer Oakley in midfield with Dickov, Howard and Fryatt up front. A bit more defensive for away games though, we don't really need to win them as long as we win at home King has been pretty poor so far, now he's got his new contract with more cash he probably taken his foot off the pedal. But i dint go Fulham so he may have played well there. Stick Kish in there in the johnstone's paint. Infact rest a lot of players for JPT.

Ross-Kemp Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 I think there's a rule stating that 70% of the starting line-up have to be first teamers

If you're a team wanting to win promotion, you need to win the majority of your away games. Anyway, I don't think we'll win every one of our home games. We're winning games and playing better football than we're used to so at the moment, I'm not prepared to question Big Nige's team selection. In the last few games, Gradel has been more effective to come off the bench. He's still young and his temperament is questionable (Particularly at Stockport), he needs to be kept fresh.

As for Gradel though, he's one of those players we need all game, we can't have a player of his ability bench-warming...
Matt Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 I'm glad others, not just me are thinking something is fishy, looking for a reason to why Dickov is playing where he is. Everyone knows my thoughts on Dickov, and I thought it was just me being picky, looking for something else to slag Dickov for, looking for a conspiracy theory behind Dickov, but when Dickov first signed i'm sure I wasn't the only person to think - "This is a Milan signing", I then put that worry to the back of my mind and got on with it there was nothing I could do to change it. But now it is getting pathetic, playing Dickov where he has been playing is keeping Gradel out, and I can't say Dickov has set the world alight playing on the wing and deserves to play there, If we don't want to play Gradel from the start play Adams or atleast someone who plays in that position, If we have to play Dickov play him in his correct position, he is wasted anywhere else, As it stands you couldn't afford to drop Howard or Fryatt so that points to Dickov on the bench, but it is almost like we are looking for a position to play Dickov in, which leads me to an assumption and conclusion Dickov is a Milan signing and there is a clause in the contract saying Dickov must play a part in most/all matches.

Rocky Dennis Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 All about getting him match fit innit!! As for Pearson being obliged to play him, what a loada bollox. Conspiracy theories should be confined to JFK,The lunar landings and 9/11!! For the record Dickov had a very good game IMO, too many whingers on here!!

He's had the same pre-season training as everyone else (Barr friendlies, but still if that's the case the reserves have friendlies throw him in some of those games). Paul Dickov spent the pre-season training with Man City and apparently Mark Hughes is quite strict throughout pre-season and like's his players super fit.
Tilley Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 In my opinion, unless were playing 4-3-3, If Dickov isn't playing aswell as Howard or Fryatt then he should be on the bench, simple as.
Ross-Kemp Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 He is in the side because of mad mandy We have 4 very good wing players ( adams, dyer, porter and maxi ), and he isn't good enough to start up front. People are too fickle, yes he may score a few goals, but he will also be remembered for la manga I Hate him
Fez of Mahrez Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 As long as we're playing like we did yesterday and winning games, I don't care who plays.
Simi Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 He's had the same pre-season training as everyone else (Barr friendlies.. So to conclude he's not had the same pre-season as everyone else has he? He's probably still short of his full match fitness.

You may be correct what you're saying about Hughes and Man City but the fact is Paul Dickov is NOT fit, the reasons for that are irrelevant, playing games will get him fit and when its possible to play him up front we'll need him as sharp as possible.

Ross-Kemp Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 Ironic post!!No club needs fans like you!! Everyone has their own opinions. I'm simply saying, I remember when he left, how many people gave him stick ? I'll admit I did, thats why i'm not back on the bandwagon

I could just imagine Pearson explaining his need to get Dickov fit to Gradel and Adams before announcing the team. As for Dickov's "very good game" I don't see much evidence of that judging by the fans' player ratings. I think you'll find his average to be just over 6 which might put him close to this week's booby prize. "Very good game!" You're not talking about his poker on the coach back are you?
