Koke Posted 10 November 2008 Posted 10 November 2008 Why can't we go 4-3-3, Villa style, with Berner as some sort of a holding midfielder. And that would then release Oakley, and more importantly Andy King. Henderson Edworthy - Tunchev - Hobbs - MattockOakley - Berner - KingFryatt - Howard - Dyer I don't know, it's an option I suppose. Otherwise we can just go back to our normal 4-4-2.

It's quite an interesting idea but I could see us losing some pace and penetration down the right, particularly with Edworthy not being a raiding wing-back and I've yet to be convinced about Berner. Against that King and Oakley would surely benefit from some help on the defensive side and I'm sure there would be benefits from their having more freedom to support our strikers.

Or is he just shite? 'Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today' Kishishev is a pre-season footballer. A bit like a pacemaker in athletics. He turns out in the warm summer months rather like the Chelsea Pensioners appear at Remembrance Day and once the season starts he quietly disappears until the next pre-season. It's quite a good arrangement all round. By his presence, City demonstrate their support for government directives about not outing veteran players just because of their age. Kish meanwhile enjoys a decent standard of living, doesn't wear himself out and develops an alternative career as a translator for Tunchev.

C-man Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 Henderson Edworthy - Tunchev - Hobbs - MattockOakley - Berner - KingFryatt - Howard - Dyer When we kicked off on Saturday, I'm sure this is how we started, and it resulted in us not having the ball for 20 minutes. When Oakley swapped with King, we went back to 4-4-2, which clearly worked a lot better! We'd definitely need a lot of work to play 4-3-3, and a much better holding player than Berner.

I can see Berner going the same way as James Chambers at this rate. Too versatile for his own good.

Agree completely. But now Mattock and Edworthy seem to be established as the full-backs the problem of work overload for the central midfielders should be eased. Even though not operating as real wing backs these two move forward willingly enough and, more important, are comfortable receiving the ball and are well able to pass to feet in continuing the moves. Indeed it was a feature of our game how well and how many times we passed the ball along the ground once the team had reorganised and settled.

Keeping the ball on the floor and building attacks through midfield is definitely the way forward. Not totally happy with the personel and formation on saturday but it was better than the predictable, rigid 4-4-2 we have been playing recently. Maybe play Oakley holding, King and Adams further forward and the same front 3 as saturday? BTW I was impressed with Howard, seems to be a better player with the ball on the ground! (And I am NOT his biggest fan)

(And I am NOT his biggest fan) Not sure but I think Pearson likes Kingy in the holding role not just because he's a tidy and generally reliable passer, but because he's uite strong in the air, something that's not regarded as a strength of either Oakley or Weso. You'd have thought Berner would fit that bill too but nothing I've yet seen suggests he has the distributive presence of King whch is a pity because that would open up some options when we need them.

The lack of a genuine, quality holding player requires that both our centre mid players, whatever the pairing, are sound defensively which is one possible reason why a more attacking option such as Adams or Porter has not been tried. One answer is to play a 3 man midfield, yet we really have few options in this area. King, Oakley and Adams would seem to be our best bet with either King or Oakley holding but I really do not think that either of them are sufficiently strong defensively to do the job on their own. (The horror of the Brighton game keeps coming back to me, with King being overwhelmed when Berners went missing in the second half.) Personally I think the King / Oakley pairing is sound defensively, providing, of course, we continue to play the ball out of defence and do not resort to the long ball. The 3 players supporting Howard really need to loosen up and get more involved, they need to move about and show for the ball, this will give our midfield options when it comes to playing the ball into attacking positions.
