Fosse Boy Posted 12 November 2008 Posted 12 November 2008 Something for undeserving celebrities to put on their CV?
Daggers Posted 12 November 2008 Posted 12 November 2008 What purpose do they serve? Thick and/or lazy people can use them to validate a life spent doing something vapid.
Benji Posted 12 November 2008 Posted 12 November 2008 Thick and/or lazy people can use them to validate a life spent doing something vapid. cynic
Zingari Posted 12 November 2008 Posted 12 November 2008 look out for the new channel 4 reality tv series , "I’m a celebrity, get me an honorary degree"
Stuliasz Posted 12 November 2008 Posted 12 November 2008 I find it quite insulting to see the honorary degrees awarded after the effort I put in to earn mine.
stez Posted 12 November 2008 Posted 12 November 2008 of course a life spent working hard, pales into insignificance when compared to the holy grail of a degree...... i'm unlikely to gain a 'real' degree, due to my not being that way inclined, (i'm one of those thick non-academic types (see non-academics don't even deserve their own word!)) but if i were to gain one from a lifetimes work and furthering understanding in that field of work, i'd be happy to receive a plastic degree. all i need to do now is keep ploughing on for another 60 years, and gain more respect, than i already have, from my peers.

I think the point is that doctorates are awarded to celebrities as PR stunts to raise the profile of the institution rather than reflect serious advances or achievements that have benefited society. Respect, I fear, is the last thing you should be aiming for if you wish to collect a piece of paper to frame in the downstairs toilet - try reading the weather with a low-cut top instead

Daggers Posted 13 November 2008 Posted 13 November 2008 Charlie Dimmock - now there was a gardener worthy of an honorary degree.

Don't worry, you're appreciated round my way
Bellend Sebastian Posted 13 November 2008 Posted 13 November 2008 I've got a real degree from a so called red brick university and I can say with hand-on-heart cast iron certainty that it was perhaps the biggest waste of my time of my entire life. I would much rather have not bothered and been given an honorary degree for my distinguished work talking shit on the internet

Guest Posted 13 November 2008 Posted 13 November 2008 I wish someone would give me a degree. My essay writing is garbage.

Zingari Posted 13 November 2008 Posted 13 November 2008 it's quite fascinating how present day students are usually telling everyone about the good times they are having at uni , but ex uni students constantly bemoan that they feel as though they altruistically martyred themselves for an ungrateful society ah well , back down t' pit

That, and being almost completely dysfunctional and a miserable sod. I'm just bitter because I didn't make more of what should have been a wonderful opportunity
