Finnegan Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 Computer infected with Trojans and a "Trojan Downloader." AVG reports them, allegedly fixes them and then they keep on trucking. Full system scan revealed them all, stuck them in the "Virus Vault" from where I've tried both leaving them and deleting them - still no better. All it seems to be doing is bringing up a fucktonne of pop ups (even through Firefox) but whether it's doing more is another question. Any ideas on getting rid?
DB11 Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 I can fix it. Obviously your PC isn't in front of me though Urm, in this order, Add/Remove Programs* CCleaner, HijackThis (you gotta know what you're doing with this though), MalwareBytes Quick, Malware Bytes Full, AVG. Try all of that. If that doesn't work then use ComboFix and SmitFraudFix. CCleaner (Tick all of the 'Advanced' boxes as well as what is ticked as default) : http://download.piriform.com/ccsetup214.exe HijackThis : http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-Hijack...4-10227353.html MalwareBytes (remember to update before running and to actually remove the malware once found) : http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-...&tag=button AVG : Obviously you say you already have it. ComboFix : http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe SmitFraudFix : http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/resources/link243.html *Go into Add/Remove Programs and remove all of the junk. If you don't know what something is, type it into Google before trying to remove it as it could be a codec or something that you need. However, if one program says 'AntiVirus 2009' then DO NOT remove it as it is a virus and removing it this way will fcuk up your PC. Let the anti virus programs remove this!
Ryanside Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 When avg pops up with the name of the virus, google it. There is usually dozens of pages on how to get rid of it
Finnegan Posted 4 December 2008 Author Posted 4 December 2008 Might be quicker just to trust DB11 with my laptop.
Vardinhio Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 I had it last week. Tried pretty much everything but the computer slowed down so much was unbearable. I just re-formatted in the end.

I'm tempted. The only stuff I'd be bothered about losing is small enough to transfer onto my old man's PC before doing so. Only takes about an hour, if that, with HP's recovery tool.

Finnegan Posted 4 December 2008 Author Posted 4 December 2008 You could also do a format & reload as well In all honesty, is all that stuff you just linked me likely to get rid of the problem? I'd hate to download it all, spend about an hour with each one scanning, only to find I'd still be better off reformatting? I can't really be bothered clearing my hard drive AGAIN, but it'll only take me a couple of hours to get everything back.

Yes. I work at a computer shop and so have to deal with removing viruses all the time. What I just told you is the most common way (And I hope my boss isn't reading this ) of removing the viruses. However, obviously you have the awkward ones that you have to go into the registry to fix as they can fook it up. But each time you turn your computer off / on it makes the virus worse (This is what my boss says anyway. Whether this is just for one virus he is on about or most I don't know...) Tbh though, I'd just go straight for MalwareBytes and run that and see if it makes it better. If it makes it mostly better then chances are it is a common easy virus to remove and so you can go ahead with the other tools. Or just run MalwareBytes once and then AVG. However, to make the MalwareBytes scan quicker then run CCleaner otherwise MalwareBytes will be scanning your cookies and temporary internet files etc. which does take a long time and is pointless so running CCleaner first removes all the cookies and temporary internet files etc.
Vardinhio Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 I'd just re-format. I took everything off except for my uni work and now my PC is suppperrrfastt
DB11 Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 I'd just re-format. I took everything off except for my uni work and now my PC is suppperrrfastt You can make it fast by upgrading the processor and RAM too.
Finnegan Posted 4 December 2008 Author Posted 4 December 2008 You can make it fast by upgrading the processor and RAM too. Yeah but reformatting is free. Thanks for the advice, Danny, I'll look into some of that software in future incidents but I think for now I might just wait til my next day off (please, God, Sunday) and reformat. It was starting to slow down and wind me up anyway and it'll give me something to do. I don't think I've too much I'll be bothered about losing.

Durnerz Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 Personally i'd just stop downloading porn, Finners
Finnegan Posted 4 December 2008 Author Posted 4 December 2008 Personally i'd just stop downloading porn, Finners A man has his rights! How do you reformat? Depends on your machine. With HP laptops they have an inbuilt recovery program that you just run to return it to factory settings.
DB11 Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 How do you reformat? If your computer has a recovery partition then you can use that when booting up. Or you would need to have your Operating System disc (eg. Windows XP Home) and then boot from disc. From there you can choose to format the drive and then you'd re-install the OS and that is all that would be on it. I prefer this as when you use a recovery partition you get all of the crap programs that comes with the PC, such as Norton Trial etc.
Alexikokopops Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 How do you reformat? I think you have to push something when your computer's starting up. I've done it once. I say that, I mean my housemate did it for me.

Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 If you've ever seen Office Space, just do an Office Space on it.

For any sort of PC issue, be it spyware, viruses or trojans, better buy yourself Kaspersky. That's the shit. You can get yourself a demo at CNET. Oh, and one more word of advice: DON'T BUY NORTON, IT'LL fook UP YOUR SYSTEM!!!
