Weird computing problems

[Mods: I didn't include this in the other complaining thread because I am hoping someone will shed some light on some of this. Hope that's ok]

Just a bit of complaining before going to bed. But perhaps you can help with some of these?

How come:

- my computer beeps and temporarily stops responding (for say a second or two) when I switch my lamp off? My lamp is plugged into a power extension, my PC is plugged into a UPS that is plugged into the mains. Though the KVM switch IS plugged into the same power extension hub as the lamp... hmm...

- my computer (same one, running XP) sometimes refuses to shutdown, even after ending all possible processes under task manager? Earlier today, it confirmed that it was shutting down, so I left it for one hour or so, came back to find... it was still on! So had to switch it off. ARGH!

- my PC sometimes stops seeing the Buffalo TurboUSB drive (a 1Tb external USB drive). Why? Who knows... it seems to happen out of the blue. The USB disconnect utility does not see it, so I cannot disconnect it safely, and even if I just unplugged it and plugged it back in, it generally would not see it anyway. So the next thing is rebooting right? Well, see next item for next problem on the list...

- the Buffalo TurboUSB drive *sometimes* causes my PC to fail to boot. It simply gets stuck at hardware checking time, does not even get to Windows. If I want to be able to boot, there you go, unplug Buffalo drive and Windows will boot happily. Methinks the drive (and perhaps the annoying Memeo backup software) may be causing some trouble...

So many wasted hours...

Have to tried updating your USB drivers?

Faulty motherboard? :dunno:

i had problems number 2 and 3, and i cured them by throwing out the motherboard and upgrading to a better one.

the trouble with harware is that it can last for years or months, luck of the draw, i guess

They are up to date....

Have you tried turning it off and turning it on again?

:giggle:

Of course, when the PC allows me to!!!

Sorry, forgot to mention that the other external drive (Freecom 500Gb USB drive) continues to be happily detected and has worked fine (with absolutely NO problem) for over a year. The Buffalo one, instead, is a recent purchase.

do you have a lot of water in the computer?

if so, maybe you have mistaken your buffalo for a....bison

no, it doesn't really work when you write it out, sorry....i'll get me coat.

I would normally agree that this is a Hardware problem. However i have had problems with my USB drives just latly and i found that i had a Virus. After deleting such virus from my directory then my USB drives seem ok again. This could also explain the non shutting down which also occured before the virus was deleted on my PC.

Scan your computer with Malware scanning software.

The reason your lamp effects your PC- Sounds to me like your mains/power adapter is dodgy and is turning all objects off temporarily whenever you turn one object off. Your computer will stay on for a minute or so due to the charged capicitors that it holds inside, which are designed to prevent a sudden switch off which would cause damage to the circuit boards. Get the power adaptor checked.

wow, that's so much a better answer than mine.

might still be wrong tho.

Computing is all about trail and error. You find a solution that works. There is usually more then one way of fixing things. Of course what i said maybe wrong it is impossible to diagnose a computing problem without actually seeing and having the computer at your finger tips.

Sure but that would not explain why one USB drive is fine and the other isn't.

Scan your computer with Malware scanning software.

Running several things all the time.

Spybot

Spyware Blaster

Avast anti-virus

Also, my Windows machine is behind a linux firewall/internet gateway.

The computer stays on because it is connected to the UPS which holds charge for 20-30 minutes or so, plus it is plugged into the mains (not the SurgeMaster extension lead).

We had electrical problems in November (ie the UPS beeping, other PC rebooting - its UPS turned out to require replacing). I kept asking the company supplying electricity if there was a problem witht he supply. They said "categorically no", hire an electrician to investigate. Yeah right.

One day it got so bad I could see the kitchen light going on and off on its own

Next day, power cut for three hours in our block. Vans parked outside fixing a major fault in the cabling.

Fair shout on the usb's on a normal occasion. However mine did the same as i stated. However it seems you are pretty well protected so maybe on this occasion i am wrong.

In which case i would agree that infact the drivers for certain ports are not installed correctly.

Fair enough about the computer staying on using the UPS charge. Interesting problem, i still think that may be slight surges in your electronics that cut things off for a moment. which would explain the bleep and the delay for the computer to run again. How you fix this is an electronics problem i know nothing about that.

Motherboard problems could also be the case. it is impossible to diagnose there are so many things it COULD be.

How many times does it beep, this is important.

- my computer (same one, running XP) sometimes refuses to shutdown, even after ending all possible processes under task manager? Earlier today, it confirmed that it was shutting down, so I left it for one hour or so, came back to find... it was still on! So had to switch it off. ARGH!

This sounds like something is preventing this, I reccomend virus scanning your computer.

- my PC sometimes stops seeing the Buffalo TurboUSB drive (a 1Tb external USB drive). Why? Who knows... it seems to happen out of the blue. I had this problem before of hardware not being detected but only resolved it by reinstalling Windows.

I also had this on my old PC where hardware fails to boot and resolved it as above.

So many wasted hours...

How old is the computer? Do you often virus scan?

Theres nothing wrong with Windows. Mine runs perfectly.

Beeps usually mean memory problems i think. I had beeps and had to change me memory sticks. There is another thing that beeps could mean but I can't remember what.

Hmm possibly 3 years?. It was my backup PC (my main PC was pretty much the same).

Just to give you an idea, it is an AMD Athlon 2500+ 1.83 GHz, 1GB of RAM

The specs were pretty much the best you could get without bankrupting when I built it!

I am planning to upgrade when I complete a certain project that is coming to an end now.

Don't want to be computer-less during the very final stages of the project.

I have a virus scanner constantly running in the background.
