I don't care about students anymore. Scum, the lot of you.

Ouch. Just keep paying your taxes so I can fritter them away and thus boost the economy.

(On a lighter note, we deliberately sat near the kitchen door in 'Spoons the other day but Fabio was nowhere to be seen)

Under age drinkers will drink no matter what the price is and what the age limit is!!

Unfortunately, people on low income will be punished, they will drink out less and drink ever crappier alcohol from supermarkets!!!! :(

Anyone doubting the reasons behind this law should try to walk through some of the tastier Glasgow estates after dark (I've lived in two of them).

There are gangs of 14/15/16 year olds (and younger) drinking themselves stooooopid (alcohol's not all they're on, admittedly), fighting each other, mostly carrying knives, frightening the shite out of any law abiding folk who are unfortunate enough to live nearby and being largely left to it by the police.

Of course, if they policed and sentenced crime properly, they wouldn't need to touch alcohol laws, but it's a start.

BTW, Someone on weed is a LOT less likely to chiv you for looking at them funny than someone who has been at the Tesco Voddy all day...

Dont you think its a token gesture, putting the price up. Its not going to solve anything.

I'd rather them put the legal age limit up (on certain drinks), I mean bloody hell I was asked for ID a couple of weeks ago because you needed to be 30, and that was just 4 cans of Stella...

If they put the legal age limit up to 21 (in shops) on drinks like Alco-pops and such like, it is going to be a big deterrent.

No it won't.

Retailers, whether greedy or desperate, will still sell to underage customers and take the chance on not being caught.

Even if they are, more often than not they're let off with a small fine and told not to do it again (until the next time..)

Then the fine they get needs to be more severe...maybe revoking their liquor selling license for a month. Putting alcohol up by a small amount isn't going to resolve the issue, the onus needs to be more focused on the licensee selling the alcohol.

They come out with sob stories about how a heavy fine and/or removal of their licence would wreck their business and put their staff on the dole.

So local councils are ridiculously soft on them - Leicester being one of the worst examples..

We all used to drink MD 20/20 or Special Red/White Lightening/Diamond White drain cleaner on the Park Friday nights.

20/20 or QC cream sherry i used to take round the park. Good Times. lol

lol What a joke, so the government go on about how much it costs tax payers on NHS costs, but not worried about a few redundancies...

Is Leicester a worse example because of the racism card being played?

He may be thinking that a high proportion of off licence owners are Asian and it's mostly off licences that are guilty of under age selling. Certainly this is my impression from reading the merc, not the race card but the proportion of Asian off licences holders.

I know exactly what he was trying to get at, your right a large proportion of off licences maybe run by asian, I wanted him to justify the race card thing, breaking the law is breaking the law, I find it would be difficult to justify racism!!!

I have to agree in this case, if i remember correctly there was a case last year of an Asian shopkeeper being fined £3k for selling something, not alcohol outside his permitted hours which I thought was outrageous.

Nobody is saying that asains are whatever don't sell to underage etc, infact my local off licence sold alcohol to anyone, he was a asain bloke but my question was where's the evidence of 'race card' and any justifaction and it's success!!

Was the race card played and did it get him off????

I don't know I'm agreeing with you I don't see the evidence.

I'm expecting Thracian to come with a link from yahoo that states asian off licences have had less liquor licences revoked then there white counterparts!!! :P:D

In my experience, as a teenager the asian stores more likely to sell to the under age, and I know a couple of stores had got caught by the law and rightfully so!!

I hate people assuming OR using the 'racism card', it's not fair on either the public or the race!!

Unfortuantely there seems to be very little faith in our council, the pc brigade and it's sympathisers have made very small and trivial issues into massive ones and the general public are beggining to assume a wider preferential treatment for ethnic minorities when there probably in many cases there isn't any evidence for it!! Then there's the ignorants, who just make blatant assumptions and have jumped on this bandwagon!!

What Davie G said plus, I wasn't just talking about Asian. A large number of liquor selling shops popping up aren't actually Asian they are Polish, though I am not going to get into a race related debate. A lot of 'Polish' are supplying 'Polish' People with behind the counter cheap, Alcohol and booze brought in from Poland. They have got away with a minimal fine because they said 'We is Polish people we bring in people to boost in economy' (Or something along those lines)- That's coming from a Polish girl I used to work with.

That's not what I asked to be explained, this is what you said:

Is Leicester a worse example because of the racism card being played?

So, who's playing the racism card, for what, where and how, and the evidence????????

Your the one making the 'racial' remark mate, so what do you expect!!!

Your making this far bigger than what it is, because what - your Asian? Where did I mention an Asian In my initial post? Get of your bloody high horse and stop looking for an argument. [/End of]

In every area of business you'll find someone flouting the law in order to make a bigger profit and race doesn't come into it, it just so happens that at this point in time in our history most shopkeepers are of non-English descent.

I'd sooner deal with someone flouting the law than someone trying to get one over their customers in order to increase profits.

You could have said black, or white, I would still ask the same thing, as stated I hate people using race as a tool, whether in a there own benefit or not!! You made the point, and if your not willing to explain then that's upto you, but your silence says a thousand words!!

There's no arguement, you could easily say 'in my experience i've known people to use the race card before', and I would have said 'that's terrible but to assume all ethnics is wrong'.....................END OF!!!! A simple and sensible discussion!!!
