Escaping Speeding Charges

Countless celebs are escaping speeding charges by finding loopholes in the process of being fined. The fact that a certain lawyer, Mr Freeman, is encouraging this doesn't help the matter.

Celebs including Jeremy Clarkson, Alex Ferguson, Jimmy Carr, Jordan and Colin Montgomerie have all escaped fines/bans for speeding.

Although I like some of these celebrities, I don't condone the fact they should escape bans while the general public face the consequences as usual.

One instance, Ferguson's, is particularly something which I believe that members of public wouldn't get away with.

Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager, was cleared of driving his BMW on the hard shoulder of the M602 in Eccles, Greater Manchester in October 1999. His lawyer argued that it was due to an emergency as Sir Alex had an upset stomach and needed to use the toilet. Later that same month, Sir Alex was cleared of speeding due to there being no proof that he was driving at the time.

Your thoughts?

Can you blame them? If you have the money to deter you from getting a driving ban yet being able to drive like a nutter then fairplay.

If they have that kind of money, they should be made to pay up. It's kind of annoying how celebrities are able to get away with 'crimes' just because of their higher status in society.

From what I read of the article a lot of them got away with it through legal loopholes, not status. Anyone can exploit these legal loopholes, you just need a good lawyer.

True but I don't think money is the issue. Your forgetting theres points attached to the fines and after nine or so that can mean off the road. If there was no points I doubt they would waste there time in court etc and just speed all the time and pay the fine because they can. Im not saying what they are doing is right but if I was in that position I would do the same thing.

Yeah, it's gonna cost you more money with obviously a celebrity has. I'm just making the point that it's not a direct relationship. It's not the judge going "they're a celebrity, I'm going to let them off", it's the fact they can afford a better lawyer who knows the loopholes and can then exploit them so the judge has no option but to let them off.

I'm saying now that I haven't read them all, but the ones I read all seemed like that.

 Wasn't Phil Mitchell aquited of drink driving because his top notch lawyer (same one Beckham and other celibrities use) proved to the courts how 2 units of alcohol were too low to effect him?????

two things bother me here...

1. how come administrative mistakes like this happen to 'celebs', i'm sure they happen elsewhere, but it seems odd that so many of these cases conveniently fall apart due to schoolboy errors.

2. that these people can live with themselves, knowing that they have not only recklessly broken the law but will exploit the system to avoid paying the penalty... what ever happened to 'if you can't do the time, don't do the crime.'

...it's like people who complain about getting parking tickets - you break the rules, you get caught, take it like a man and pay the penalty!

Maybe it's just that cases where it happens with non-celebs aren't reported as much because that wouldn't satiate the public's thirst for celebrity news?

Unfortunately for most number 2 is quite an easy one, pal!!!

If that is true, that lawyer is a Legend

Depends from case to case. Being snapped going 5mph over the limit is hardly crime of the century. In fact speed cameras cause more accidents than prevent.

probably, but still seems to be quite a few of them that 'get lucky' :dunno:

It's hardly a big secret either as I seen the lawyer mentioned earlier on watchdog and he was actually showing people how to get out of parking tickets.

I think their status does play a part.

It's not related, but Jade Goody's husband was given special release for their wedding.

If it had been an ordinary member of the public, would they have been granted the same? I'm not so sure.

Good point.

As well as this, there are loads of people that have cancer. But because it's Jade Goody, the story is so much bigger.

If she hadn't been in Big Brother, and just an ordinary member of public, would she have got the same coverage? Doubt it.

The media play a part too.

Not having a go but if you don't like jade goody or what she is doing at presnet why waste your time complaining about her? All these people who say she is grabbing all the attention are the ones giving her the attention.

Anyway back on topic

I have ways to reply to that, but I'll keep them in me - I can't be bothered to strike up a Goody debate lol.

There are celebrities who are much more famous than Jade with the same disease, but they get no coverage. That's what I don't understand. Summat aint right somewhere, it seems a bit weird to me. No celebrity ever has had this much coverage :dunno: I'm not complaining about it cos I don't even read none of it, just saying that it seems strange

As for all them dodgy lawyers, celebrities and loopholes, I hate em all. They design these laws with loopholes specifically for the rich or someone who in the 'club'. F#ck em

Just to chip in my two penneth...

I can think of 4 friends/relatives/people I actually know (Ie, not a 'friend of a friend of a friend') who have exploited legal loopholes in a bid to avoid paying a hefty fine.

I am not endorsing the behaviour, I am of the opinion "If you can't do the crime...yada yada"

I just don't think this is exclusively for celebs. Anyone with a half decent lawyer or who researches enough can find a way of getting out of alot of things.

I used to have a friend who processed parking tickets, he got me off about 5. Poor bastard was fired.
