I have just seen he is currently on loan to Monaco from Benfica?!

I remember when we made his debut at 14 in the MLS & was touted as being bigger than big!!

Never a good buy on Footy Man.

Hang on, what? He's getting insane scout reports for me even in FM09 even though I thought he was pretty much washed up now.

Yeah but he's a known quantity meaning you'll never get him for good value.

Jozy Altidore, he is the man !

:)

He became the youngest person to score a hat trick for the USA the other night, it was against T&T though.

Is he the guy who plays for Vilarreal? First Yank to score in La Liga or something like that?

I've always heard about him, I have always read he has been rated and the next big thing, I never seen anything of him to back this up and if he really was that good - I'd have thought I would have seen something to back it up.

That's him, on loan at Xerez in Segunda now, which I didn't know about until I just read it. Wondered where he had gone.

I saw the U.S. U-17s play against Canada's U-17s back when Adu was 14 and while I didn't think I was watching the second coming of Maradona, Freddy was definitely the best player out there even if he shied away from using his right foot at times. His career has gone a bit off track, but he's still only 19 and playing for some fairly big clubs, so there's still hope yet that he'll still become a pretty damn good player. For a young fellow that may have had too much too soon, maybe he needs to be humbled a bit.

This is what happens when you listen to the Americans telling you they have the best young player in the world.

Or when you see that Inter Milan is trying to buy him when he's just 10 years old. Or when you find out he scored 4 goals at the U-17 World Cup when he was 14. Or, as a 17-year-old, when he scored a hattrick against Poland in the '07 U-20 World Cup and then made Brazil look silly in the next game. But never mind all of that.

As for Jozy Altidore, I'm really happy for him as he was the RBNY hometown hero, breaking in with the team at 16. It was sad to see him go after such a promising start, but everybody who at least knew of his play also knew he needed to go somewhere that can offer a lot more than what MLS can do at this time.

I was thrilled to see him score the hattrick on Wednesday night (the third goal was a bit of a gift, though--Bradley and Donovan passed up on shots to set him up for the hattrick, and good ol' Clayton Ince got into the giving mode with some comical goalkeeping). What was makes the hattrick more impressive? Jozy hasn't played a minute of first team football since December. Villareal bought Jozy for $10 million during the '08 MLS season but loaned him to Xerez in January after a lot of teams were interested in buying him... the problem is that Xerez won't play Altidore. The rumor is that Xerez, battling for promotion, put in a last-minute loan offer for Altidore because didn't want one of their rivals to buy or loan him.

It's not especially uncommon for big international clubs to poach young talent, what is uncommon is for someone - anyone - to be able to protect exactly how a player will grow, hence the word 'potential.'

Being well developed at 14 isn't especially grounds for pre-emptively expecting him to be The Next Big Thing either, really.

Look at Gio Dos Santos - part of a glorious generation of Mexican youngsters that achieved fantastic things, alongside Carlos Vela as one of the true stars of tomorrow! What's he done for Tottenham so far?

:dunno:

All I'm saying is that Freddy Adu was billed, as a kid, as being of the ability and effectiveness we're seeing in the likes of Messi or Torres or Villa and that I highly doubt he would have had anywhere near the same degree of hype if he'd been brought up in Europe.

I thought Adu was pants but then at the U20's WC, I watched a game where he scored a hat-trick and set up two against Poland in a 6-1 thrashing. He was breathtaking.

Be interested to see if he does make a good career.

I bet nobody's ever made that joke before.

Ever.

Someone had to make that joke and as always, that someone was me.

I don't claim to be original i just claim to have ridiculously good hair.

Yeah but he's been good on every football manager since about CM03-04.

CASE CLOSED.

Always a good buy on FM agreed but not worth the coin

Bit flat though your hair, ain't it? I mean there's no body to it. It's just limp like a damp squid.

I mean... this is a barnet:

Fake age.

I know Africans, believe me. He'll reach his prime when he's 23 (real life 28).

Kanu, Martins, Yakubu etc all in the same boat.

Isn't Martins like a 35 year old proclaiming to always be 21?
During discussion surrounding Obafemi's transfer to Newcastle, rumours started to surface that instead of Obafemi being only 21 that he was actually 27. However, this rumour was confirmed as untrue by the Nigerian FA, who were the root of the rumours originally when they had a clerical error on his birth date (which stated he was born in 1978) when they first called him up to the national team even though his passport and Birth Certificate stated he was born in 1984. There are also rumours that Martins played with Celestine Babayaro (27) in the Nigerian youth team, this was deemed untrue though as Martins never played for the Nigerian youth team and only ever played for his hometown club FC Ebedei while in Nigeria at the age of 15.

Nigerian FA trying to sweep it under the carpet.

Blatantly guilty.
