Alexikokopops Posted 7 April 2009 Posted 7 April 2009 Five charged with betting on game My favourite thing is that they're all putting thousands on, except for Peter Cavanagh who had it as one of his matches in a £5 accumulator
GLC Posted 7 April 2009 Posted 7 April 2009 Five charged with betting on gameMy favourite thing is that they're all putting thousands on, except for Peter Cavanagh who had it as one of his matches in a £5 accumulator Hey big spender
Koke Posted 7 April 2009 Posted 7 April 2009 So they all bet on Bury to win the game, which they did, whilst they were still playing for Accrington. They'll all get lengthy bans.

Koke Posted 7 April 2009 Posted 7 April 2009 Except for one. He played for Bury and put a bet on bury to win. Just checked it, and it seems like Andrew Mangan was on loan at Accrington from Bury at the time.
Hitesh Posted 7 April 2009 Posted 7 April 2009 Disgraceful for football if this is true and I have a feeling the problem may be a little more widespread that what is public! I'm sure its quite easy for players to get relatives or friends to put money on for them! As much as it saddening to think, this probably won't be the last we here of cases like this.
CosbehFox Posted 7 April 2009 Posted 7 April 2009 I think some of our players must have been involved in spread betting when we opened up that massive lead of 15 points.
Darkzzz_ Posted 7 April 2009 Posted 7 April 2009 Surprised the FA haven't swept this under the carpet like they usually try to do. Surely it doesn't happen in squeaky clean England.
Alexikokopops Posted 7 April 2009 Author Posted 7 April 2009 Just checked it, and it seems like Andrew Mangan was on loan at Accrington from Bury at the time. His last game for Accrington last season was the 24th of March and the article says he was "at Bury" so I'm assuming he'd returned by the 3rd May (when the game in question happened).

Yeah you're right. I just don't get why players would bet on games they are involved in. I guess with their low salaries, they just wanted to hit it big time once.

So that explains Carlisle's late equaliser on saturday. On a serious note, I agree it could be carried out by anyone, if they wanted to get someone else to place the bet for them. I would expect this is only confined to the lower leagues as the players think they have more chance of getting away with it. Surely players in the higher tiers have more to lose and don't need the extra money with the wages there on.
Webbo Posted 7 April 2009 Posted 7 April 2009 I just show how thick some footballers are. Did they seriously think somebody putting £4k on a 4th tier football match wouldn't be noticed?
Maybes Posted 7 April 2009 Posted 7 April 2009 They obviously thought they wouldn't be caught.
Part Of The Crowd Posted 7 April 2009 Posted 7 April 2009 Cavanagh shouldn't get done too badly, it looks like he just bets his fair prediction on games and puts a fiver on it. The report says he's been betting on games before. The other Accy Stanley players though is disgraceful
stez Posted 7 April 2009 Posted 7 April 2009 Accrington Stanley?! Who are they? it's what ian rush drinks
Tevez Posted 7 April 2009 Posted 7 April 2009 I didn't know Accrington paid such a bloody good wage. They must of saved up a while!
fox123 Posted 8 April 2009 Posted 8 April 2009 There used to be a company called Betbrokers based at Canary Wharf, who used to take bets from sports stars to protect their identity with in the betting circles... what they would do was take the bet from them...then ring around every book maker going & bet online to get what they would call 'guaranteed bets' They only dealt with bets of £500 or more. There was only particular occasion they rang me up wanting to place £18,000 (Eighteen thousand pounds) on Wycombe to win the league at 10/1, we took £2k off it because of the liability, but within two hours of Wycombe being 10/1 they went to 6/1... they would then lay at 8/1 on exchanges guaranteeing profit what ever outcome...betting is corrupt full stop, it shouldn't be a surprise.
