lcfc_jme Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 This, shamefully, is the solitary reason I want to learn BSL. It isn't to help people at all, it's to feel good about myself when I get to communicate with somebody deaf that's struggling. I got it numerous times over Christmas working in the shop and imagined how much easier it'd be for them if I could actually communicate properly.I'm honest enough to admit this is for my own good, not theirs. Heh. Learning sign language would also be cool I guess. I feel deeply sorry for deaf people and I really can't imagine how horrible it would be to never hear again. I'd like to think learning sign language would help deaf people to communicate with me more easily - which it probably would do - but it'd be mainly selfish reasons as it'd make me feel good knowing I could communicate with them properly and they wouldn't feel uncomfortable. (yeah, I pretty much repeated your post I suppose , but meh). Go South America and converse, they'll adore you. Seriously - the continent was built for someone like you buddyboy. Always have wanted to go to South America, Brazil especially - the main reason I wish to learn Portuguese in all honesty. Being able to mingle with the locals at the Rio carnival and hold a decent level of conversation with them would be great. Anywhere in particular you'd recommend me to visit, or is it generally accepted across the continent that they like people who want to fit in?
Thracian Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 Learning sign language would also be cool I guess. Millwall's the place!
Thracian Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 Nice babu.Rich dem baldhead Béké drebble. Buh wait nah - don't they talk a language indigenous to the island which you aren't learning before you go there to oppress them with your "English"? **** me, what does this mean to the educational system of the island? To the people who lived there before you landed on the shore? Still - who cares huh? Us imperialists can dictate as we please. ‘Chou poule!’ If you can learn the language of every country you visit on holiday I congratulate you. As for the imperialism - I'm surprised the word is still in the English dictionary. And I don't know what it's got to do with me any more than slavery or the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
Thracian Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 I'm not as intellectual as you fine gentlemen, but I fail to understand Thracian's points? Is it not a positive thing to be bi-lingual? I will use myself as an example - and last time I checked myself & most of my mates spoke reasonably good English, and we were all born to immigrants. English will never ever be under threat. When have I ever criticised the idea of being bi-lingual? Quite the contrary.

Guest Posted 17 April 2009 Posted 17 April 2009 I am currently putting the finishing touches to an essay on how the spread of English has affected the Welsh, Cornish and Manx languages over the ages. I bet that's quite an interesting read. Good luck with it!
