davieG Posted 21 April 2009 Posted 21 April 2009 1926 Leicester’s Arthur Rowley, record career goalscorer, is born. No-one in the history of English League football would hit the back of the net more times than Arthur. In a playing career spanning four clubs, 19 years and 619 matches spread over all four divisions, he plundered 434 goals, and it is a mark of his staggering pre-eminence that the next most prolific marksman in the League is the pre-war icon William ‘Dixie’ Dean, who accumulated 379. Outshone by his brother Jack, of Manchester United and England fame, Arthur nevertheless helped both Fulham and Leicester City to Second Division championships in the 1950s and made one appearance for England ‘B’ against Switzerland in March 1956 – scoring once in a 4-1 victory. He then led Shrewsbury Town to promotion from the newly formed Fourth Division in 1959, netting 38 goals in the process. Arthur died in Shrewsbury in December 2002. 1930 Arsenal and Leicester record the highest ever draw - 6-6 - in English first class football history just five days before Arsenal’s 1930 FA Cup Final appearance. David Halliday scores four for the Gunners but is dropped for the Wembley game!
SamL Posted 21 April 2009 Posted 21 April 2009 Exactly two years since our famous trip to Preston. Very good memories of that day.

We might well have, although the 6-6 scoreline is relevant to April 21st as it's the highest ever scoring draw, not highest scoring win.
