Brown's Britain. They'll either tax it or nick it.

Or it could be that more people are reporting burglaries in the first place? This would then show greater confidence in the police? Or the fact that more people are insuring their belongings?

What about the way that crime figures are recorded? Haven't they changed from recording all offences by one offender as the same to recording all offences separately, which would lead to an increase?

Crimes dealt with by magistrates are not recordable; maybe there is a shift from dealing with offenders in the lower courts, hence the increase?

BCS, if I remember correctly, has a sample size of 40,000. Or is it 20,000? This is without looking at other problems with the BCS.

Just out of interest, what kind of figures were there for burglaries 15, 20, even 25 years ago?

Statistics can mean whatever you want, but I would rather look at why there is an increase in a more objective and analytical manner before spouting off some knee-jerk reaction against the current establishment.

Kneejerk? Why would people suddenly start reporting burlaries because of greater faith in the ability of our police to detect them?

People don't always go to the police when they are a victim of crime. There are many reasons for this.

But as you are always so keen to knock everything about this country, I selected a few arguments that were going to hook you.

As I said, you can report all the figures you like, I personally am more interested in how and why they came about.

Your link isn't working.

Ah, "Sorry but we haven't been able to serve the page you requested - please try again". A compelling argument...

I agree with the point Lisa is making. This is mainly because I'm a statistician and analyst and it winds me up no end when statistics are mis-used to create a sensationalist headline. Especially with reports of things linked to cancer

I'm not saying that's definitely the case with this, but its always worth looking more into these kinds of things. This is probably going to be my last contribution to this thread, I just wanted to make a point about stats :)

I know. It wasn't hard to find another that made the same point.

It says that burglars don't fear getting caught, yet it also says that the risk of being burgled is at its lowest for years. A bit contradictory in some ways.

How convenient it is. Use an argument without stats and there's an indignant demand for evidence. Use an argument with stats and people dismiss them. Basically an idealist will ignore anything that counters their beliefs or manipulate the information.

This country is in the worst peacetime mess it has been in for decades yet there are still swatches of socialists on here who refuse to accept it, believe it or condemn the godforsaken government they helped to elect.

Increase in burglaries? No. Everyone is lying. It must be from the Daily Mail.

I must admit, my parents say the same, this nation has gone downhill. Worst still is the fact that no matter who gets elected next, it isn't gonna change................

If you didn't want your story questioned, why did you post it? Or did you expect everyone to read it, and say, "actually, this country is a shithole. It must be Brown and Bliar's fault, as it wasn't like this before 1997. I could leave my doors open without the fear of everything being nicked, and illegal immigrants coming in and taking my home, wife and job. All this, and not a penny taxed. Thems was the days......"

It's those bloody Mexicans. That's what it is.

Bloody Mexicans.

Who do they think they are with their tequila, funny (but impressive) moustaches, yummy food and ridiculous hats...

Actually.. lay off the Mexicans. They are part of the solution. Not the problem.

Pah.

Jingoistic nincompoops.

Worry not my friend, one day they will all learn.

Having lived through several eras of Conservative, Labour, New Labour I frankly can't tell the difference except they seem to get more and more corrupt and self serving.

If you're colour blind they're all, quite appropriately a shitty brown colour.

Years ago they were totally different but nowadays their policies seem to be pretty much the same :giggle:

On the face of it maybe but the effect they had on me has always been fairly constant - they just change the ways they take the money off you.

If you're at the top or the bottom you notice the difference more but stuck in the lower mid earnings level it's pretty much the same except it gets greater with each year as they find more and more things to waste it on or different people to give it to.

I do like the Bliar touch. So appropriate.

And you are right. This country has become a shithole and it will get a lot worse unless the lunacy that's causing it comes to an end.

Let's see:

======

Britain's estimated debt in five years is £1,400,000,000,000. That's £1.4 trillion. Or £23,200 for every person in the country (legally).

Britain's tax bill, already the highest ever, even before the budget, will grow another £5 billion over the next two years.

Government debt will be 79% of GDP by 2013/14 way above WMF safety guidelines.

Worse still, a World Economic Outlook Survey says the UK economy will shrink 4.1% this year and only grow by 0.4% next. Very reassuring. I'm glad my business isn't run on those lines cos I'd have been bankrupt.

Unemployment, now 2.1m officially is generally expcted to reach 3m in a year's time. You can bet that burglaries will increase even more!

Lying Labour has "pledged" not to increase taxation every year since 1997. But taxation is higher than ever and will go on increasing dramatically for a long time and probably for decades.

As so aptly put in the national press, Labour always runs out of money. But it's always our money it runs out of. Never theirs. And while our so-caring socialist politicians will always see that they're alright, they will now seek to plunder the pockets of those who drive what industry and entrepreneurial enterprise we have left.

As it has not worked in the past is there any reason to believe Lying Labour now? I can't find one.
