Lillehamring Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 your city council allowed this to happen - what is the point of having planning consent, if the architectural plan is abandoned
hairy Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 They must have re applied for planning. It does look shite
Babylon Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 They were too busy making Curve look nice, even though nobody can actually see it. ahem...
Lillehamring Posted 29 April 2009 Author Posted 29 April 2009 They were too busy making Curve look nice, even though nobody can actually see it.ahem... surely the blue is just an undercoat, surely
davieG Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 surely the blue is just an undercoat, surely Sounds about right - an undercoat used as a top coat. When you get closer you can see it's just painted concrete.
Lillehamring Posted 29 April 2009 Author Posted 29 April 2009 I have no idea what this thread is about. but your contribution is valued, none-the-less
Lillehamring Posted 29 April 2009 Author Posted 29 April 2009 They were too busy making Curve look nice, even though nobody can actually see it.ahem... just looking at this again and i've noticed how awful those white window frames are
Babylon Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 surely the blue is just an undercoat, surely That's what we thought... Oh no. An absolute disgrace.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 Sounds about right - an undercoat used as a top coat. When you get closer you can see it's just painted concrete. I wrote to the Mercury, in my capacity as local busybody, to casually enquire when the developers were going to get the second coat done, and to helpfully point out that you can still see where some jolly fellow painted the words 'Wonder World' in big white letters on the top level. I don't see why they bothered to paint over that, it didn't make it look any naffer than it did anyway
Alexikokopops Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 but your contribution is valued, none-the-less What's this thread all about anyway? Has someone painted a tower block? Or is it meant to look pretty and they've only painted the one coat because they're lazy?
Dr The Singh Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 There's so many high rise buildings in leicester that look just horrid, and the make-overs are just as bad!!
Lillehamring Posted 29 April 2009 Author Posted 29 April 2009 What's this thread all about anyway? Has someone painted a tower block? Or is it meant to look pretty and they've only painted the one coat because they're lazy? the thread is about how the council approve planning consent, wowed by beautiful drawings of excellent looking buildings - the building firms them come in and do the cheapest nastiest job possible, and the council just sit back and do nothing (so far) so the pictures show what we were supposed to get and the realities - kinda like plastic surgery gone wrong... i'm sure there are others, the one near west bridge was never what it should have been either...
lou Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 I work a lot with developers in Leicester and have been told that the guy who developed the "Blue Building" had a disagreement with Leicester Regeneration - which I understand is part of the City Council (someone may correct me on this) - he applied for funding for this project and was rejected... had a big bust up with them and has done this to stick 2 fingers up to the council. It could be totall bollocks but thats what I was told.

lou Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 hah - but, equally, its the worst possible advert for his company! Some developers are not the sharpest crayons in the box
hairy Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 the building firms them come in and do the cheapest nastiest job possible No building firms build to order. Its the building firm's client who decide what is put up, usually decided on by how much things cost. He then instructs his architect who instructs the builder.

It could be totall bollocks but thats what I was told. Its partly true. Leicester Regeneration had the building down for demolition and an office 'park' being constructed. They made an offer to the owner of the who said it wasn't enough. Various bids went back and forth but the owner always wanted more. He then decided to develope the existing site himself and was refused any grant to assist. He then went about it using his own limited funding and refused to pay every builder involved with the project their final payment when the work was done. Pettifer Construction went bust, with this non payment being a major factor, the loss of 270 jobs. Last time I heard of the developer he was trying to sell the flats himself and had not sold one.

stez Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 it's always been like this in leicester (and most probably most other towns/cities) there were some great post war plans, which i believe the council asked for) with a monorail and roads that worked, nice (non-coventry) looking buildings, but they were all scrapped so it could be done on the cheap. the (disgraceful) mercury had the plans in a few months ago, but i can't be arsed to find a picture.

Ahh thanks for that.... you never know if what you get told is the truth I do remember seeing big signs on the building during construction saying "built with no assistance from Leicester Regeneration" or something along those lines... seemed a bit childish to me at the time Not surprised they havent sold them... whod want to live in that monstrosity? Bloody shame about the job losses etc... construction companies are having enough problems without that shit going on!!

The Mercury can take a lot blame for the awful situation around the station - plans were in place to take Waterloo Way (Tigers Way) around the back of the station up a widened Conduit St and over a new Swain St bridge in order to draw the station into the City. The Merc campaigned long and hard against it so we now have the inner ring road cutting the station off.

Premier Inns have moved into part of it.
