filbertuk Posted 26 May 2009 Posted 26 May 2009 There was talk a few weeks ago speculating that if Boro sacked Southgate they may come calling for NP (given his Boro past) Living on Teesside I've been listening tonight to their chairman Steve Gibson on the local radio....he says Southgate is definately staying as manager.
Darkzzz_ Posted 26 May 2009 Posted 26 May 2009 Katy will be happy. I actually don't mind him to be honest.
Finnegan Posted 26 May 2009 Posted 26 May 2009 He seems a decent enough bloke, just doesn't really come across as having the spine to succeed as a manager. The best managers are all either horrible wankers or having a stint of tactical genius about them. Southgate falls under neither catergory and generally seems to be a little too inept for Premier League management. He's one of a few that would never be where they were today if it weren't for their reputation as a player. Sad, like I said, he seems nice enough and I'd not wish ill of a honest bloke but I just don't think he cuts it. The same can be said of Gibbo, really, you don't want a Mandaric or Flav' in charge that's going to go through a million-and-one managers but I think you need to be a little bit ruthless as a chairman, too. I may end up eating my words but if Southgate struggles in the Championship then Gibbo's going to have wasted a hell of a lot of time just for the sakes of loyalty.
Hitesh Posted 26 May 2009 Posted 26 May 2009 Can't believe they are keeping him on! Their loss I guess!
lildave3 Posted 26 May 2009 Posted 26 May 2009 Tbh I think I would have done the same, then if he doesn't get them into playoffs at least this season, get rid.
Webbo Posted 26 May 2009 Posted 26 May 2009 It's not a huge surprise. He kept on Brian Robson after they'd been relegated before..

Does this mean my nose is brown?
Koke Posted 26 May 2009 Posted 26 May 2009 Nice man and everything and I wouldn't wish anything bad on him - but I just don't rate him, for the reasons Finners mentioned. I hope he & Middlesbrough does well though [for Katy's happiness]
dandannieldanok Posted 26 May 2009 Posted 26 May 2009 I personally think this is the correct decision and, as long as it's not to the detriment of us, I hope Southgate proves the doubters wrong and Boro do well next season.
Granno Posted 26 May 2009 Posted 26 May 2009 Good decision, I think Southgate can turn it around up there.
Ultra Posted 26 May 2009 Posted 26 May 2009 I don't see why not. Robson did it when they last went down. It may take Southgate longer, though..
Guest Mickyblueeyes Posted 26 May 2009 Posted 26 May 2009 Biggest mistake Southgate made was allowing Catermole to go and replacing him with duds. Poor decisions that esculated into this seasons debacle. He has got some potential and a chairman who's ready to bankroll his mistakes. Time will tell, so far it looks like another ridiculous decision by a chairman who backed Bryan Robson long past his sell by date.
