Koke Posted 27 June 2009 Posted 27 June 2009 Russia's energy giant Gazprom has signed a $2.5bn (£1.53bn) deal with Nigeria's state operated NNPC, to invest in a new joint venture. The new firm, to be called Nigaz, is set to build refineries, pipelines and gas power stations in Nigeria. (emphasis added.)Analysts say the move could further strengthen Russia's role in supplying natural gas to Europe. The agreement comes during a four-day African tour by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. As well as forming Nigaz, Russia is keen on developing a trans-African pipeline to transport Nigerian gas to Europe. Adams Oshiomhole, leader of the Nigeria Labour Congress has opposed the newly formed joint venture between the state operated NNPC and Russia's energy giant Gazprom. Following the announcement of the $2.5bn (£1.53bn) deal, Oshiomhole -- who last year ran a successful campaign to force Shell to withdraw from the Niger delta -- strongly objected to the plans. "We went through the same thing with Shell. Foreign companies coming to our country to get rich from our natural resources, while the local population suffers the consequences and is left with polluted fishing waters. We don't want Nigaz in this country and we'll do whatever we can to keep them out". That is absolute gold, like.
