I'm shocked he didn't get POTM tbh.

Stupid thing about the Football League POTMs is that it's always the goalscorers that get top three. Only time you ever see a defender in the top three is if they've scored a couple. I know football is about scoring goals, but you also have to stop them, and create them, it's a team game. I pay no attention to those awards anymore, they're shite. :@

Berner's performances in the past few months and his rise with Leicester City have now caught the eye of the Swiss newspapers.

Here's a translation of a snippet from today's Tages-Anzeiger, a Zurich-based daily:

Flirting with the Premier League

Tomorrow Saturday, the Swiss National football squad can already qualify for the World Championship 2010 in South Africa, with a win against Luxembourg. No longer in the inner circle of the best Swiss footballers, that's Bruno Berner. The 31-year old played his last of his 16 international games on the 6th of June 2004, when Switzerland won 1-0 against Liechtenstein.

Even though he's disappeared from the radar, the Glattbrugg-born is again on the rise. Berner is playing a vital role as a first-team regular at the Championship club Leicester City. The left-back performed over the full distance in all eleven games so far and has even scored once. "I'm in good shape", he confirms. His good performances now earned him credits with the league. After the 1-0 win against Premier-League relegated Middlesbrough and the 1-1 against Coventry, Berner got nominated to the Team of the Round in the Championship. "The success in Middlesbrough was particularely sweet", he adds. "It was our first away win in this current campaign".

It didn't always work out so well for Berner in England. After an unsuccessful year and a half with Blackburn Rovers, by Summer 2008 no one was counting on him any longer. He only played three league games for the English Premier League club and his contract was not renewed. At the time, recently relegated Leicester City, signalled some interest. During a medical however, a knee injury was detected. Berner had to undergo an arthroscopy. The transfer was in danger of going bust. But Berner got lucky. After a six-week build-up training, he was able to sign a three-year deal in September 2008 with the "Foxes". Looking back, to Berner it was a difficult Summer that year. "I had to coach myself in order to remain in shape. That wasn't mentally easy, either".

To play in England had always been his dream, he says. That's why he focused on finding a new club on the Island and even considered accepting the offer from a third-division club. "Relegation to League One was an accident", he adds. "Leicester City is a big club". Thus was declared the immediate promotion as first priority under new manager Nigel Pearson and a completely changed team was formed. "If possible, we want to march through divisions back to the highest level in consecutive seasons", adds Berner before his first start.

The first step has been passed with flying colours this June. Leicester reached first place by a large margin. And after the first fourth this season, Berner's vision of a return to the Premier League, which Leicester had to say goodbye to in 2004, seems to be realistic. Leicester, currently in 7th spot, are classified right behind the playoff places, ranging from 3rd to 6th. Besides the first two directly promoted teams, the four following teams do fight for the qualification for the third and final promotion spot. Berner emphasizes the ambition of a direct walk-through to the highest league in England: "We're on a good way".

But in order to classify as one of the best six teams after 46 rounds, the team has to get smarter according to Berner. "We create a lot of chances, yet still are not consistent enough". In particular the game away at Watford (3-3), where the team squandered a 2-0 halftime lead, will last in his memory for longer. The clear favourites for promotion are the previously demoted Premier League teams Newcastle, West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough. Tomorrow Saturday though, an assumingly easy challenge awaits with the currently 17th-ranked Derby County.

I just noticed that the newspaper was wrong about the kick-off for the Derby game. lol

Good question. Last night, Eintracht Frankfurt's Christoph Spycher played left-back, and he's the same age than Berner.

Second choice is Sampdoria's Reto Ziegler, who's having quite a tremendous season so far.

Berner's probably just too much under the radar these days or still suffering from an injury-prone image. Or it's simply because he's only playing for a second-division club in England.
