Benji Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 So they keep him post relegation but he's gone after beating Derby 2-0 and being just off top spot. OK Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has been sacked - with the club fourth in the table and bidding for promotion. His dismissal came in the early hours of Wednesday, just after Boro had secured a 2-0 home win over Derby. The 39-year-old Southgate was appointed Boro boss in June 2006, but last season presided over the club's relegation from the Premier League. Boro chairman Steve Gibson said: "This has been the most difficult decision I've ever had to make in football." Former Crystal Palace boss Alan Smith, described by Boro as a "football consultant", has also left the club. Southgate, who won 57 caps for England, joined Boro as a player from Aston Villa in a £6.5m deal in summer 2001, and made more than 200 appearances for the club. "Gareth has given Boro magnificent service as a skipper and, in very difficult circumstances, as manager," added Gibson. "However the time is right for change and that change has had to be made." Prior to Tuesday's win, Boro had lost three successive home games, but their victory over Derby left them just one point behind leaders West Brom.
Finnegan Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 I don't disagree with his going, he isn't good enough and if they do get back up to the Premiership you're hardly going to rely on him to keep you there. Gibson's a sensible, patient and considerate man who has given Southgate all the time in the world. You'd have to imagine he's on the way out now because they've got a considerable replacement?

Benji Posted 20 October 2009 Author Posted 20 October 2009 Where does it say he's gone? BBC and their OS, there's no story to quote though tonight it's just a headline
AjcW Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 Should of done it before Derby really. But as mentioned above, that man is one of the most patient and intelligent chairman around. So intelligent infact the NP wont even cross his mind (Crosses Fingers).
Joe. Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 They're 4th and just a point off top spot, hardly a poor return so far. Ok things could have been better but it's hardly a crisis situation here.
Nick Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 So they keep him post relegation but he's gone after beating Derby 2-0 and being just off top spot. OK That seems a little mad. You have a big name at a club which can not attract players due to being in one of the most impoverished, run-down areas of the north east and you have a Championship table of 0-0's, which you are at the top of and a stadium you can't fill. What were Middlesbrough hoping for out of Championship life? I hope Southgate get's a better job elsewhere. Middlesbrough are likely to rot without him. And lose the big players remaining... like Wheater.
Finnegan Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 Actually I'd be genuinely a little bit worried right now to be honest. :\

lildave3 Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 BBC and their OS, there's no story to quote though tonight it's just a headline Fair enough. I'm not too surprised, although when you look they aren't actually doing too bad. Adam Johnson seems to be carrying them though. His dealings in the transfer market have been absolutely woeful.

Not a hundred percent sure but I think they may have been done with this football consultant who has also been relieved of his duties... especially the Alves deal.

Anyone that agrees to selling Lee Cattermole deserves to be slapped heavily with a huge catty hand.
AjcW Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 Anyone that agrees to selling Lee Cattermole deserves to be slapped heavily with a huge catty hand. I love lee cattermole. But could they really of kept him in the Championship?
Fox You Forest Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 His dealings in the transfer market have been absolutely woeful. Alves and Emnes would strike fear into most defences.

lildave3 Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 I love lee cattermole. But could they really of kept him in the Championship? You do realise he left a while back? Alves and Emnes would strike fear into most defences. ! I can understand Alves, he scored goals in the Eredivisie. But Emnes scored less than double figures in about 60 games! What on earth possessed him to sign him.
StanSP Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 Surprised about this. Thought they may have kept him on having got the win tonight. Ah well, hopefully Nige has the right mind and sticks with us for the foreseeable future, and doesn't get tempted by Boro. Not that you ever could get tempted by that shithole up north.
AjcW Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 You do realise he left a while back? Yes, I just think Boro had been planning for the drop since shipping players like that out.
Benji Posted 20 October 2009 Author Posted 20 October 2009 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...ugh/8317621.stm cheers
Ultra Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 We're a bigger club than Boro. Our gate last night was nearly FIVE THOUSAND above theirs. I'd be shocked and very disappointed if Pearson left us for them.

So if Steve Walsh was a top manager at a club only very debatably senior to Leicester, that he had no emotional attachment to, you'd be surprised if he was interested in the City job should it be open?
Jimothy Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 Looking at the Boro fans talk on BBC 606 they are saying, even before his sacking was annouced, that Gordon Strachan will be the new boss tomorrow. Obviously rumours but they seem pretty sure.
