Warning – heavy snow on the way in Leicestershire

Just when you thought it was safe to get back on the roads – more heavy snow is predicted.

The Met Office issued a severe weather warning and said between two and four inches of snow was due to fall this afternoon.

Police advised drivers to be alert and take conditions into account before setting off.

Heavy snowfall could mean delays for motorists – many returning to work for the first time since the Christmas break.

"The forecast follows a spell of snow, sleet and ice which has gripped the UK for more than a week but relented in most parts over recent days."

Mr Knightley said the expected deluge would be "quite a big snowfall, probably the biggest fall of this cold spell."

He said: "It's particularly badly timed because people will going back to work."

Gritters have been out for the past 14 nights. Leicestershire County Council has 17 vehicles, which can spread roughly 150 tonnes of salt a night, covering 1,200 miles of road.

Director of highways Matthew Lugg said: "We went out last nightbecause temperatures of -4C were forecast.

"We've had a bit of respite compared with the rest of the country in terms of snow but our guys have been out for the past 14 nights.

"They've been doing a great job over the Christmas period to make sure the roads are safe.

"The roads are going to be tricky for the rest of the week, so I would urge people to take longer to complete their journeys."

Snow, sleet and ice has left hundreds of drivers counting the cost of shunts and accidents as cars slid on treacherous black ice.

On Wednesday alone, Leicestershire police were alerted to 56 road accidents – more than double the average daily workload for the force's roads policing team.

Inspector Mark Newcombe, from Leicestershire's traffic unit, urged drivers to take extra care.

He said: "The best advice when severe weather hits is to stay off the road. If you must drive, make sure you are prepared for the conditions.

"If you do hit ice and feel the car start to slide take your foot off the accelerator immediately. Don't be tempted to brake as this will increase your risk of spinning and steer gently into the slide.

"The best way to avoid sliding in the first place is to make sure your speed is right. It may need to be slower than you think."

The Met Office said Leicestershire was likely to be one of the worst-affected areas of the country today.

It also warned New Year's Eve temperatures could fall to -3C.

Weatherman Paul Knightley, a forecaster with national weather centre MeteoGroup, said: "We can expect to see falls of five to 10 centimetres (two to four inches) in parts of Leicestershire

For fecks sake. If it does snow, I doubt we'll have a football game on Sunday! Our last game was on the 29th of November!

I hope it snows either loads or not at all.

Most likely that.

 - honestly, i'm trying not to laugh...

beautiful clear blue skies here today, thus -15 degrees and frozen nostrils this morning... expect to get a bit of snow late new years eve which will be nice, but probably a drop in the ocean as the snow from the weekend hasn't budged

Looks like the snow that gridlocked Basingstoke is coming up to most of you then, have fun!

Though my mum just went up to Leicestershire with my sister this morning, so they get the worst of the snow in both places .

An inch of snow in Canada is two feet in England.

Oi - enjoy that bloody white powder for once!!! :santa: Ours has gone again and I doubt we'll see more of it in the days to come. Would you rather have a white or wet New Year's, eh? You choose.
