davieG Posted 19 January 2010 Posted 19 January 2010 From the Merc Leicester City owner Milan Mandaric wants to turn the club into an international brand. Mandaric is looking to attract investment into the club through business links with foreign companies and has targeted markets in America and in Asia. Earlier this season, an American consultancy firm was hired to advise the club to identify new revenue streams and Mandaric believes the club has to raise its profile overseas. Several English clubs have shown what is possible and Birmingham City yesterday announced a new five-year kit deal with Xtep, the biggest sportswear firm in China. Mandaric said City are now in a good financial condition and he believes the club could be an attractive investment option for foreign companies, and he plans to use his business contacts in the United States. He warned that may only be possible if City win promotion back to the Premier League. Mandaric also insisted that the failed bid to sign Dutch legend Edgar Davids earlier this season was not an attempt to make a high-profile signing just to help attract investment. "We need to build a bigger brand internationally and be recognised as a club, because this club is as good as Aston Villa and other clubs," he said. "This is not a smaller club by any means. "We need to get some partnerships and some stronger international marketing allies in countries such as America and in Asia. We need to bring some international sponsors in. "You can accomplish that when you are in the Premier League, because you can provide exposure for those people. "Edgar Davids is a global player, but it isn't one player that will make the difference, it is more in the business world we need to build up. "Of course, when you are in the Premier League you have exposure from the television. Sky TV has done a tremendous job and they are good allies. The exciting thing for us is that we are building now and we are not just fighting for survival like we used to be. "We are not patching things up with a bandage now. We are healthy and we are trying to keep improving."

If we do get promoted by the time any investment reaches the club we'll probably have been relegated!
Bellend Sebastian Posted 19 January 2010 Posted 19 January 2010 I find it depressing that it's even necessary to consider doing such a thing. It's times like this that I think football has become a steaming pile of shite
ACF Posted 19 January 2010 Posted 19 January 2010 Interesting... I'm sensing links with American and Asian companies.

There will come a time believe me, when the top league England will be a closed shop and if you are not in the top 20 when this happens then forget it!
MC Prussian Posted 19 January 2010 Posted 19 January 2010 Sounds like we're about to turn into Manchester City Mark II. As long as the finances are done properly, I have no problem with foreign investors and expansion. However, most examples in the past (as well as current ones) have shown the flipside of the coin.
skinnydipper Posted 19 January 2010 Posted 19 January 2010 My first thought was that he'd sold The Walkers to developers to build a Tesco
Leicfox Posted 19 January 2010 Posted 19 January 2010 Same old bollox coming out of Milan's mouth. Heard it all before. He want's to make us a international brand but that is only possible through promotion to the top flight. Why does he bother with shit like this ? It makes me angry tbh as he has all these plans to make us "MASSIVE" yet he needs to splash the cash on some quality signings for that to happen.

It is from the merc after all.
MPH Posted 19 January 2010 Posted 19 January 2010 So its pretty much what some people have been saying all along...... as soon as we are promoted, he'll sell the club and he is off.

Or he welcomes extra finance to work with him and is trying to do what is best for the club in the current football climate...Oh sorry forget what I said. It is not negative enough so I must be a disabled that believes everything he reads. All negative posters do not actually know one way or the other though do they? Perhaps having a little faith in the man that saved our club may be a good thing for a change.
Tony Pine Posted 19 January 2010 Posted 19 January 2010 about time the commercial director etc got their arse in gear

Guest Basildon Fox Posted 19 January 2010 Posted 19 January 2010 Any more than you know for certain that he 'saved' the club and from what - relegation . We were due to go into administration. It is known that Chris O'Grady was sold just to keep the club going and we were signing people like Josh Low and Andy Johnson who was five years past his best. We were not relegated through lack of finance. :dunno:

We were not relegated through lack of finance. That's not a fact it was speculation. I doubt whether the £65k we got for O'Grady would have had any influence on whether we went into admin, even if we had gone into administration it would have resulted in points deduction and relegation which is where we ended up anyway. I'd be amazed if we no longer existed as a club without Mandaric's involvement. Sure we might now be better off positionally but there is no way of knowing the real finances of the club and how secure we are. So hardly classed as 'saved'.

Tim Davies who was the then Chief Exec has said how messed up the finance at Leicester was in an interview about Craig Levein if I remember rightly so it was not actually speculation. That to me tells it's own story. People might not like MM but that should not cloud the fact we have signed better players (and spent more money on some shite too) then we did for the previous 5 years. Again what is wrong with having positivity and having some faith. You are starting to sound like Victor Meldrew. You saying could have, still being here is a nonsense. Do you think going back in to admin as well as getting relegated woould have been better?

I'm just questioning your use of the word 'saved' in the same way I questioned the £25mill he was buying/putting into the club. I don't know the facts just like 99% of the fans but I'll stick to my scepticism until someone proves otherwise. I'm certainly not taking anything written in the Mercury or proclaimed by Mandaric as gospel. If that makes me sound like victor Meldrew then you can blame it on the misdirecting, secretive, double-talking Mandaric so I'm happy to live with that reputation, sooner that than a Mandaric sycophant which the Mercury and many fans are.

There is no way, if we got promoted, we should expect Milan to fork anymore dosh to keep us there. Yes he has money but its not a bottomless pot. Not only do you need athe TV money to stand a good chance of survival in the Prem but also someone willing to put cash in. If that means the introduction of other investers then it can be the only way forward. To me its only good business.

It wouldn't surprise me if MM was actually in the black since buying us. His initial bankrolling of us we don't doubt. But in spite of the debt, this club has had a decent turnover since his arrival and your not telling me some of that hasn't made it's way into his own personal coffers.

No you weren't. You also said we were relegated anyway so what was the difference which is why I asked you if it would have been better or worse to have gone down in administration or as we did not through lack of finance. Leeds and Southampton both went down in admin. It cost leeds an automatic promotion spot and may well do the same to Southampton. As I said Tim Davies has already commented on the financial mess Leicester were in at the time and we have certainly signed better players under MM. Do you think with the financial commitment he has with the club he would just walk away and leave us in the crapper? Also what double talking is there when he says he wants to hopefully bring further resources into the club from America, Asia etc? Do you think he really means he is going to sell on any debt to the Taliban or something? I am confused as to what double meaning you can take from what he said. :dunno:
