They were phenomenal against the Swedes. true, and despite some amazing shot accuracy, norway looked less than convincing in finishing off the swisss... but finals can be funny things, so fingers crossed. i'm still pissed at the USA getting a double in the nordic combined - they were rubbish on the practice jump, but seem to always come good when it matters, i guess that is the difference with americans and sports, that wining attitude. which is probably why the moan and whine so much if they don't win
Jordan Posted 26 February 2010 Posted 26 February 2010 I'm begging for work to be closed today due to the heavy snow we've received since early Thursday morning (and the light snow we're receiving now) so I can watch the USA-Finland hockey game live and in peace this afternoon. Several of the highways here are closed, but I'm the only one that lives walking distance away, so there's a pretty good chance I'll be the only one there... please, bosses, have mercy on me... let me watch the hockey game... Oh, and curling, too!

All credit to the US flying out of the traps again, though I've never seen a game gifted and capitulated so early and easily. I'm enjoyed watching that arrogant **** Kiprusoff falter though. Canada - USA final it is then! On a sidenote, this is probably the last time well see such legendary stars as Forsberg, Jagr, Selänne, Koivu and Fedorov at the Olympics

In ski jumping, the top jumpers tend to be small. In XC, the top skiiers tend to be tall, with long legs and poweful strides. A little guy is more likely not going to be a star XC skiier, just as a big dude won't travel very far in the air off the jump. Here, small guys tend to be overlooked in sports, and big guys are often encouraged to play other, more popular sports. I'd guess we've got lots of very athletic average-sized men here, in a country of over 300 million with a great sporting history. Ski jumping is very hard and very dangerous, but it's easier for us to take decent XC skiiers who are good--but not nearly good enough to ski with the Norwegians--and teach them to jump. We had some great jumping times in the combined races, but really, our boys were gangsta on the XC half--straight-up gangsta. What a romp that was!! Canada - USA final it is then! Next time Kipper goes back to Finland, he ought to be hanged in the Helsinki Market Square (figuratively, of course). How dare he hold the grace of his presence hostage for the #1 goalie job, and then go and turn in perhaps the worst performance in his career in the semifinals? This is the same douchebag that backed out on Finland in '06 because of a "knee injury" yet didn't miss any playing time for the Calgary Flames before and after the Olympics. Finland, of course, went on to the gold medal game that year (losing in the Nordic "old firm") and Kiprusoff's "replacement," Antero Niitymäki, was named the tournament's MVP. Kipper is a better goalie than Niitymäki, but Niitymäki is still good (and streaky, for better or worse). Also, Niklas Bäckström of the Minnesota Wild (this year's backup for Finland) is easily capable of starting (he gave up two goals on his first four shots but let's be fair, I don't think he expected to come in halfway through the 1st period!). I don't know what Kipper did to make nice with his teammates, GM Jari Kurri and coach Juka Jalonen, but the Finnish program is going to come under serious fire from the folks back home for this game and this "performance" by Kiprusoff. On a sidenote, this is probably the last time well see such legendary stars as Forsberg, Jagr, Selänne, Koivu and Fedorov at the Olympics 'tis sad, indeed. I grew up watching all of those guys. Forsberg was a hell of a player but very unlucky in the latter end of his career with injuries. It really says something when NHL teams had his phone ringing off the hook the past year and a half despite his age and his ankle problems. Jagr, what more can I say? One of the game's truly great big forwards. Some people built up a reputation for him as being aloof and selfish, but that was horribly undeserved. He had a few years with the Rangers before heading over to play in Russia's KHL, and he was awesome. Shattered team single-season scoring records, was the captain, a great team player and funny as fook with the press. I really wanted him to do well. Selänne, the best Finn since Kurri. Playing out in Winnipeg and the lean years in Anaheim made him one of the most underappreciated stars in the NHL in the '90s. I'm glad he got his Cup and is still going strong. Saku Koivu is the second-longest-serving captains in Montréal Canadiens history, which says a lot on its own, but also overcame a ridiculous array of medical setbacks, from lymphoma to cataracts. Tough guy. Oh, but Fedorov can fook off, as one of the last things he did in his NHL career was score the game-winning goal for the Capitals against the Rangers with five minutes left in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal Game 7 ...but out with the old, in with the new... especially with the USA, who slumped to a miserable performance with the old guard in '06 but are one win away from gold now with their younger squad I didn't consider our boys to be gold medal-contenders this year, but they're doing all of the things good teams do: aggressive forechecking, solid defense, strong power play and outstanding goaltending. I knew they were going to be faster than most of the teams in this tournament, but it looks like the other pieces are falling into place now, too. Canada vs. Slovakia later... Canada is certainly the favorite, but Slovakia has shown Russia and now Sweden that they are not a team to overlook. Marian Gaborik is a legitimate superstar, and now that they finally have a good goalie (in Jaroslav Halák), they're finally making some noise on the international scene.

Lillehamring Posted 27 February 2010 Posted 27 February 2010 just woke up as a result of staying up for the women's curling final - i have to admit i was pleased for sweden, whether they deserved it or not, also very interesting to, er, listen to the reaction of the partisan crowd - pin dropping, anyone. i was having a look at canada's massive medal haul, and what a load of crap it is, like 75% of their medals came in speedskating and 20% in freestyle. flattering much. i was in the pub for the biathlon final, earlier, which was pretty special, a room full of people going nuts - and bjørndalen moving to within one medal of being the greatest winter olympian ever. can't wait for the curling tonight, shut those canadians up again

YES.

YES. well, that was a massive anticlimax - norway were poor, morris for canada had the game of his life, but canada were well beatable, ulsrud gifted them 3 points - shame, after so many games to end with such a damp squib as that. pleased for morris, as i thought he was excellent, but otherwise pretty low quality based on the other games i've seen...

Feel for the guy., he would have beent the first paralympian to compete in both Olympics and paralymics. He's been replaced by what the coach considers fasters skiers. From what I've heard they are unlikely to win medals, so it would have been nice to let this inspiring guy compete. They've been labeling him as the first person to compete in both in the same year so I'm sure he would have been able to compete. Anyway it's something he wanted to do, to compete with in the actual Olympics, and he qualified for the team on merit.
Jordan Posted 28 February 2010 Posted 28 February 2010 I was reading about that yesterday on TSN.ca; I feel bad, but the best interests of the team come first. --- There are just six hours left until the men's ice hockey gold medal game... Now, this tournament can already be considered a smashing success for the United States. They'll win at least the silver and they've already upset Canada, who are boasting one of the most talented rosters in hockey history--and in Canada, too. This was a team picked by exactly nobody to win gold, yet here they are, just one win away from being crowned the best hockey team in the world. ...yet I'm still nervous as fvck. There's enough on the line when the USA meet Canada, anyway, but with the gold medal at stake, the tension is almost unbearable for the whole of Canada and hockey-obsessed Americans like myself. The 2002 gold medal game was a huge deal--Canada beat us on our soil (and in the wake of 9/11, too, when the whole country was still looking for a pick-me-up, even if hockey isn't most Americans' thing)... but this game seems much, much bigger. You can attribue the vengeance-factor from 2002 (and the 2004 World Cup) for the Americans and vengeance for the game two Fridays ago for Canada for a lot of this. But the immense expectations heaped upon this Canadian team, plus having the Olympics in hockey-crazed Vancouver instead of Mormon-filled Salt Lake City, just adds so much more to the atmosphere. As such, this is expected to be the highest-rated hockey game in both American and Canadian television history despite the shitty media coverage the NHL has received in the U.S. over the past few years.
