AoWW Posted 22 February 2010 Posted 22 February 2010 I've not got a clue about curling but I've been vaguely watching the British women's match (whatever it's called?!) (think it's live at the mo). Thing is, how long does it go on for? I'm falling asleep and really want to go to bed.

They take breaks though sometimes, like in the Superbowl, because some of the ice melts due to the vigorous sweeping.

Players have been commenting on the very loud cheering in the stadium, which means they have to scream much louder than they usually do. The viewers hear them because of their microphones, but they don't hear eachother Having said that, I too cringe when Danes speak English
Jordan Posted 23 February 2010 Posted 23 February 2010 I think it's a little funny that the Danes seem to be alternating between skirts and tracksuit pants for superstitious reasons. I'm rooting for the USA men, who have no chance to qualify for the medal round, to save some face tonight against China... but they're down 2 after the 5th end + China has the hammer, and I'm a little too tired to watch the rest of this gam... err, bonspiel . Our women currently sit in last place, but they're technically still alive with a slim chance to reach the semifinals: I'm pretty sure that if the USA win both of their games tomorrow, several teams lose their remaining game(s), Leicester City beat Donacaster Rovers by at least two goals but score less than five, and they beat a randomly-selected group of four spectators in a closest-to-the-button competition, they're in the medal round.
MC Prussian Posted 23 February 2010 Posted 23 February 2010 Our hockey girls beat Russia after penalties to snatch 5th place overall. Just seen the penalty shootout. Impressed. They're all amateurs.

Switzerland does have a storied hockey history--a history that goes back much further than most other European nations--and that seems to be forgotten by North American pundits in their ongoing narrative of international hockey. Good job to the Swiss ladies; now, are your men going to beat Belarus today and set up a rematch with us?

I did, despite the fact it was obvious that the GB women's team were slowly emploding and were clearly going to lose. For 'experts' in their chosen sport, then certainly played like amaeturs, and the moody skip should be given an ASBO on her return. I suppose she's fairly fit in a chavey shoutey sort of way!

The Swiss have now gone OT/SO in their last three games and now have about 22 hours to rest before their date with the Yanks in the quarterfinals. This is now the second time in a row that the Swiss have reached the quarterfinals in the Olympics and will most likely be joined by the "Big Seven" (as it was in 2006). The NHL has expressed interest in bringing back the World Cup of Hockey (with reports last year saying they were looking at holding the tournament in 2011); however, the NHL's collective bargaining agreement expires in September 2011, and for the new CBA, the NHL and the NHL Players Association are going to have to come to an agreement on a variety of issues--including a format for a future WC and whether NHL players will participate in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi. (because of that, if the WC does happen, I think 2012 is a more likely date) As it stands, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman (and, I'm sure, many fanchise owners) seem to be steadfast against allowing NHL players to play in Sochi. While the NHLPA hasn;'t commented, some NHL players--particularly Russian players and most notably Alex Ovechkin--have declared their intent to play in Sochi. IIHF president René Fasel--who is Swiss--is pretty much begging the NHL to allow its players to play at the next Olympics, and the IOC could really use the cash boost from that. I'm sure the NHL would rather do the World Cup and keep the money for itself, but if the new CBA allows for both the WC and NHL players in Sochi 2014, when Bettman & Co. have a chat with the boys at the IIHF, I wouldn't be surprised if Switzerland (who also hosted the 2008 and 2009 Victoria Cup games, featuring NHL teams) are included in the WC this time.

Not really - I stayed up and promptly fell asleep on the sofa missing most of it. Heard the result today so I gathered it had all gone pear-shaped for us. An ASBO for the skip... why, what did she do?

The curling from the different womens teams has been quite inconsistent. And the moodyness doesn't just apply to the UK girls, I've noticed it with other teams too when things are not going right. Apparently the Danish skip and the captain had a spat in that same match in the 6th end calling eachother names. They skip has also been crying on TV a couple of times after they've lost matches, it's ridiculous..
