WTF - why bother to print most of these couldn't they have found a few more Fans that actually care and go to the games?

High Hopes for Leicester City? Your views on the play-offs and the Premier League

Celebrations

After six years in the lower leagues, Leicester City are just three games from finding themselves in the heady heights of the Premiership.

Saturday's win against Preston means they are one of four teams through to the Championship play-off finals.

Depending on results in the final games in the league next Sunday, City will play either Cardiff or local rivals Nottingham Forest in the play-off semi-final.

If they beat them, thousands of City fans will be heading down to Wembley for the play-off finals on Saturday, May 22.

People from the county have told the Mercury what they think of their team's performance.

Liz Jose, 37 Leicester

I've got a season ticket and really didn't expect them to do so well so I'm thrilled. I'm really happy that we're in the play-offs and I'm looking forward to getting to Wembley. I hope we get Cardiff in the first two legs. I'm optimistic.

Rod Green, 60 Leicester

I hate football. But I welcome the fact that they've done well even if I don't care who they beat.

Francis Essien, 23 Loughborough

With the right players, they deserve to be in the Premiership. I hope they get Forest in the first legs of the play-offs so they can get the local derby out of the way.

Keith Horsepool, 84 Braunstone

I'm not interested in football at all – I've never liked it. I couldn't care what league they were in. I'm not a bit excited about them going up and playing teams such as Manchester United. I don't like rugby either.

Kerry-Lee Howard, 17 Newfoundpool

I used to go and see them all the time when I was younger and it's going to be good for everybody – the whole of the city – if they get promoted. I reckon Cardiff are pretty poor so we should beat them if we get them.

Max Musson, 19 Welford Road, Leicester

I don't watch football – I watch rugby. But this is definitely good for the city and I would like to go and see them in the Premiership. It would be a proper laugh. In the play-offs I hope we get Cardiff first then beat Forest in the final.

Joe Hubbard, 18 Kirby Muxloe

I like rugby more than football, but it's about time Leicester City started catching up. City used to be a good team. I hope we end up playing Forest in the play-off final at Wembley – we'll beat them 3-1.

Sanjeev Singh, 20 Rushey Mead

I support Aston Villa, but I am a bit excited that they've got through to the play-offs. I hope they get Cardiff in the first round. Hopefully, City will be playing Villa next season in the top division – and hopefully Villa will beat them.

Ben Booth, 20 Wigston

I saw them in the Premiership, then going down two leagues, then going back up again. If they go up again, it will get us back on the map. I hope we see Forest straight away in the play-offs, so that we can get them out of the way.

Lisa McNairn, 25 Beaumont Leys

I'm an Aston Villa supporter. It is good that Leicester has a chance of going up – as long as my 14-week-old son doesn't grow up to support them!

Travis Barr, 17 Stocking Farm

I'm a Liverpool fan, but used to go and watch Leicester City with my dad when I was a kid. I keep meaning to go and see them and hopefully will next season.

Maureen Deacon, 57 Anstey Heights

I go about four or five times a season and I'm really looking forward to the Middlesbrough match at the end of the season. I really didn't expect them to do so well, to be honest. I hope we get Forest in the play-off final at Wembley and beat them in extra time.

Mark Johnson, 18 Wigston

This season has been brilliant – well above expectations. I thought they would finish mid-table, but Pearson's been a brilliant manager and I think they will get through to the play-off final. I hope we get Cardiff in the first legs and then have the big game with Forest at Wembley.

Ian Johnson, 21 Wigston

This year has just been excellent. I'm looking forward to the party atmosphere at the last home game of the season against Middlesbrough, then the play-offs. I hope we get Forest first because that will be a good away fixture. If they get up I think they should be able to stay up.

Mark Marriott, 47 Wigston

I've got a season ticket and the last few months have been very good. There was a lot of doubt from a lot of people at the start but they've done really well and, hopefully, it will be the same next season. I don't think it matters who they get in the play-offs – they've still got to beat them.

Alan Palmer, 78 Saffron Lane, Leicester

I went to one football match once when I was 15 and when I came out thought 'if that's it, I'll never go again'. I would rather watch rugby, or boxing, or wrestling or Formula One . I couldn't care less how Leicester do, or who they play.

What is the point in any of these? lol

Even given the Mercury's standards, I'm aghast at the fact that some of these have actually been printed in an attempt to reflect the feelings of "fans" about the club's achievement.

An absolute joke. May even be worth, god forbid, a letter of complaint...

Some of these comments are an absolute disgrace. If people don't care about football or Leicester City, what is the point in the Mercury selecting so many of their comments saying that they're 'not bothered', in an article supposedly celebrating Leicester getting into the play-offs. :dunno:

Agree with what DavieG said, they should have interviewed more 'real' fans, and not just got the opinions of random people around the street.

I can only think that this was done by the news desk rather than anyone to do with the sports section. It is a bit bizarre, but I suppose they would say they're capturing the full scope of opinion. Personally, not impressed.

The sports desk at the Mercury are superb, in my view. The coverage this year, regardless and outside of my involvement, has been better than previous years I think. They've gone through a difficult time when it was clear Pearson wanted nothing to do with them but they've still plugged away and come up with some decent content.

The Mercury sports desk are doing a 16-page pullout on us reaching the play-offs, think it's possibly going to be put out with Saturday's paper but don't quote me on that.

To be honest, I'm not even surprised.

These lot will probably be at Wembley should we get there. :D

I agree they've been superb in many respects, this article is so disappointingly bad the comments barely reflect the title of the article.

Did anyone else notice last night's bit in the Mercury "5 games to get in the premiership" We'll acording to mt calculations we've only got a possible 4 left, and oneof those doesn't really matter. :dunno:

Fair comment. I don't think this article was anything to do with the sports desk though as I say. Think this must have been front pages people rather than back pages people. Still a very odd article to run.

What do people think of the football coverage generally this season, apart from my bits and pieces? Do you think there's anything they've done particularly well or particularly badly?

Precisely! I chuckled reading that as it's a pointless POINTLESS article.

It's just lazy journalism. They'll have been told to go out and get 16 people's opinion (yes I did count :P ) and they've obviously just asked the first people they see, got a response and gone fook it that'll do! But at the end of the day it don't matter cause we know how real city fans are feeling. Play offs here we come!! :D

Two of the people interviewed have got links to articles in This Is Leicestershire. Articles written by people with their names.

So it seems some of the people interviewed were the the Mockery's own staff. Lazy, lazy, journalism.

Oh, and Travis Barr of Stocking Farm, how dare you sully my name with your glory-boy supporting of Liverpool!

It's better since they got rid of the Spur's supporting Jock! :yesyes:

Am I allowed to say Jock?

It would have been more honest if they'd headed it " Do you care that they've reached the play-offs"

Oh and this sentence alone sums up how crap it is -

People from the county have told the Mercury what they think of their team's performance.

Cock would have perhaps been more appropriate.

Its disgusting , there are city fans who go week in week out who could have been asked their opinions . The people asked are not interested , tiger following big club fans who will jump on the bandwagon for wembley tickets (maybe not the two old boys) . Mercury get your act together and ask real fans , they could have got opinions on here and chosen the best ones , UP THE CITY

Yes i saw that and thought it was just one typo, but they wrote 5 games in the article a few times.

So stupid. It was on the front page aswell.

What a sack of shit that article is.

It's probably not lazy journalism. It's most likely under-staffed, under-resourced journalism.

Someone will have argued against it because they only have a work experience bod who can't write shorthand available.

But the editor will probably have insisted on it because it's expected - that's the lazy journalism bit.

That's how these things usually work anyway.
