acooling08 Posted 27 July 2011 Posted 27 July 2011 I don't like the song. At all. However I would sing it as an anthem if it caught on. So long as it is sung slowly and soulfully, not the silly quick version with the waving hands Also, when was it introduced as our anthem? I have no recollection of it being played or sung in the late years at Filbo and early years at the KP.
artursteppe Posted 27 July 2011 Posted 27 July 2011 I prefer to sing 'when you're smiling' etc - makes more sense.

People need to learn to respect this fact and join in with the 'silly waving hands' (which FYI, looks incredible with hundreds doing it).

People can't seem to imagine what it would look and sound like if 1000s joined in, even the most mundane song would sound good.

Narborough_fox Posted 27 July 2011 Posted 27 July 2011 The problem is that WYS isn't played loud enough it always seems to be so quiet when its being played. If the club are really serious to get this played they should play it louder and prouder and too make aure everyone knows the words put the lyrics on the website/ big screen and really make it catch on because it's a great idea for an athem in principle.
Burmesefox Posted 27 July 2011 Posted 27 July 2011 Quite a cheesy song to begin with imho. It doesn't have the right atmosphere to fit in at a football ground. I mean, "when you're smiling, the whole world smiles with you", is something that would fit in better at a church gathering for children, or maybe as a motto beneath a buddha statue or something, but at a football ground? As fans we're supposed to aggressively support our team, but this song makes us sound limp wristed and whimsical, as if losing 4 - 0 every game is fine as long as we all smile and pat each other on the bum on the way out of the ground. Please ditch this and move on before my cringe becomes permanent. Mate, you have no idea at all have you? WYS is Leicester's anthem. When I started supporting in the early 80's it was sung all of the time - every single match by the whole of teh kop and teh main stand enclosure. We are talking 10 times the amount that sing nowadays. It is still sung away a lot but truth is most kids dont know the words and sing it too quickly and rush through the (ahem) "hand job". The song is amazing when it's sung by a few hundred and is very powerful. Here goes: When you're smiling When you're smiling The whole world smiles with you When you're laughing When you're laughing The sun comes shining through But when you're crying You bring on the rain So stop your sighing Be happy again So when your smiling When you're smiling The whole world smiles with you (hands wobbling in the air and come down quickly) The whole (hands go up and wobble a bit and come down quickly) World (hands go up and wobble a bit and come down quickly ) Smiles (hands go up and wobble a bit and come down quickly) with yoooooooooooooooooooooooo (hands go up and wobble for longer)Followed very quickly by The Leicester (clap clap clap clap clap) The Leicester (clap clap clap clap clap) The Leicester (clap clap clap clap clap) etc The hand wobbling bit now is done by L1/K1 far too quickly and the kids there dont even know the words properly. Learn them boys this is our anthem just as YNWA by Liverpool or IFBB by The Hammers!
irememberwellerstights Posted 27 July 2011 Posted 27 July 2011 I have it on my web site... When You're Smiling It's half way down the page.

themotivator Posted 27 July 2011 Posted 27 July 2011 Totally disagree. The earlier recordings would never work because they're either the wrong tempo or the recordings are too "tinny" to be played on the tannoys - otherwise at least one of these versions would have caught on. They are all great versions but work best heard on the radio sat in an armchair or bopping gently on the living room floor. I don't think the JB version is intended to have the stadium singing each word, just the chorus (i.e. in the official recording when the squad joined in). JBs version works as a brit-pop style sing-a-long anthem which he deserves credit for. I've noticed when it is played people join in usually on the second or later choruses - mostly because they feel too uncomfortable/embarrassed to raise their voice amongst the quiet. I was sat in kop last season one day and experimented - i stayed quiet at the 1st chorus and so did everyone else, then belted out the second - people around me joined in with the second. I imagine if 20% of the crowd belted out the chorus the JB version would become the club's official anthem amongst all fans very quickly. I see what you are saying about the old recordings. there are slicker "remastered" ones out there i'm sure and i don't want to suggest that the king power bowl become one giant tinny gramophone. I suppose what i am trying to say that a version of the song which is closer to the true tune and rhythm of the original would be better because the tune that Jersey Budd sings is 100 percent pants. His voice strains and drags out the wrong notes and it bears little resemblance to the chants that have been sung in the terraces for years. It always makes me laugh (with a hint of disappointment) when the song us mumbled at a million miles an hour. even though i do like to join in and it feels good at the time there are a fair few blokes who could do with lessons on how to make it sound better. I totally agree with Davie G that it would be immense if we had larger segments of the crowd singing it together at a steady pace. It would be amazing. Its cheesy but i love it, because its ours.

All that budd has done is taken a good song and taken a massive steaming dump on it. The one we sung before this one was recorded was more than adequate when sang at the right tempo - i.e. slowly rather than the 1000 wpm tempo the kop went with.

The Budd version reeks of someone jumping on a bandwagon. It isn't even the same tune. I reckon the proper version, sung at a reasonable pace and with some adherance to the melody, would get countless fans joining in at the stadium.
