easilee Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 Well performed and everything but a bit morose sounding for me. It's like he's trying to go down the epic anthem route like 'you'll never walk alone' but with the wrong tune. Should've done it Ska stylee.

The one they played last night is a new version that he's done for this season The next person who says use a youtube convertor is going to get a virtual kick up the backside. The only ways to get it ATM are to either download it off itunes, or use an audio program to record it off the moan in last night.
Larry_LCFC Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 Jersey Budd: I'll be performing "When You're Smiling" live on BBC Radio Leicester today at 3pm. Tune in at 104.9FM if you're local or listen online http://www.bbc.co.uk/leicester

If you want to you can play them simultaneously on the iplayer and YouTube to see for your self.
hebangsthedrums Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 Sorry but this song just reminds me of this; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbMe270kIyY 'Get the guitar'

Stringer said last night he'd recorded a new version, and thats why they played it, all the one's on youtube were posted over a year ago so unless somebodys gone back in time a year and posted it on youtube...

Well he hasn't recorded a 'new' version. It's the same version as a year ago.
moseeds Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 apart from the fact that JB has got the rhythm and tune all wrong making it almost impossible to sing along to. oh well especially when there are some absolutely beautiful versions of this song been recorded over the years. Louis Armstrong, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Louis Prima and probs my favourite (although i'm not sure we can get the fosse boys to sound quite as good as her) Billie Holiday. would much rather hear any of those versions ring out around the king power to be honest. Totally disagree. The earlier recordings would never work because they're either the wrong tempo or the recordings are too "tinny" to be played on the tannoys - otherwise at least one of these versions would have caught on. They are all great versions but work best heard on the radio sat in an armchair or bopping gently on the living room floor. I don't think the JB version is intended to have the stadium singing each word, just the chorus (i.e. in the official recording when the squad joined in). JBs version works as a brit-pop style sing-a-long anthem which he deserves credit for. I've noticed when it is played people join in usually on the second or later choruses - mostly because they feel too uncomfortable/embarrassed to raise their voice amongst the quiet. I was sat in kop last season one day and experimented - i stayed quiet at the 1st chorus and so did everyone else, then belted out the second - people around me joined in with the second. I imagine if 20% of the crowd belted out the chorus the JB version would become the club's official anthem amongst all fans very quickly.
davieG Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 Whatever he tried to do hasn't worked it's more akin to a dirge than anthem, probably more suitable for a fan's funeral than a song to uplift a sporting crowd.
Larry_LCFC Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 He just did an acoustic version on the radio - wasnt great. Nice guy though. Will be performing at 2.30pm on "the stage" in the rear of the carpark on saturday. Also some RL presenter will be the match announcer rather than the normal guy. And no there isnt a new version. He said they have released it now because we didnt make the playoffs last season so didnt bother releasing it back then. Its the same version. However he did say he has been asked to make a faster version of it more like a dance anthem
dave the caveman Posted 27 July 2011 Posted 27 July 2011 Quite a cheesy song to begin with imho. It doesn't have the right atmosphere to fit in at a football ground. I mean, "when you're smiling, the whole world smiles with you", is something that would fit in better at a church gathering for children, or maybe as a motto beneath a buddha statue or something, but at a football ground? As fans we're supposed to aggressively support our team, but this song makes us sound limp wristed and whimsical, as if losing 4 - 0 every game is fine as long as we all smile and pat each other on the bum on the way out of the ground. Please ditch this and move on before my cringe becomes permanent.

You could say most of that about You'll Never Walk Alone, many football songs are totally illogical, Delilah but they are effective if and when you can get the majority to join in. I think 20K people singing and then waving their hands at the climax would have a massive impact and look impressive in spite of the song, mind you it wont happen.

Darkon84 Posted 27 July 2011 Posted 27 July 2011 I think it would actually sound pretty darn good if we got a good number of people singing it. Previous versions like Franks SInatra's are too swingy for a whole crowd to sing, wheres Jerse's would be a great 'anthem'. Look at Celtic/Liverpool with 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. You could say its a boring slow dreary song, because it pretty much is, but when belted out by a whole stadium, or at least a whole stand, it sounds bloody great!

I think 20K people singing and then waving their hands at the climax would have a massive impact and look impressive in spite of the song, mind you it wont happen. You'll never walk alone translates perfectly into a football song though. The supporters are supporting the team, telling them and each other that they'll never walk alone; that they'll be strong, together. That's the essence of a team sport - everybody pulling in the same direction. Whereas we seem to be singing from a cheap self help book, as if our philosophy on team sports is to just smile and everything will be fine. But that's not really the problem. Many football songs are illogical and most don't attempt to convey any obvious message, they're just good sing-a-long songs. I'd be in favour of any old catchy nonsense so long as it doesn't make me cringe while singing it like WYS does. If you can't come up with something truly stirring like YNWA, then it's much better to attempt to convey no message at all than get it completely wrong.

So until we have a bonafide stirring song that carries a good, solid and meaningful message, we should all sit arms crossed and not do anything?
ozleicester Posted 27 July 2011 Posted 27 July 2011 Here to download it.... http://bigsong.in/song/Jersey_Budd_-_When_Your0558Hn7kQ3reqwc.html I think this is still last years version.. which to me.. is still a little too DIRGE Edit, however i would still prefer this to be played before the game... than nothing at all. It is our song
dave the caveman Posted 27 July 2011 Posted 27 July 2011 So until we have a bonafide stirring song that carries a good, solid and meaningful message, we should all sit arms crossed and not do anything? No what I meant was it's better to have a good sing-a-long song that's pretty much meaningless rather than try and sound stirring and fail badly.
Darkon84 Posted 27 July 2011 Posted 27 July 2011 No what I meant was it's better to have a good sing-a-long song that's pretty much meaningless rather than try and sound stirring and fail badly. Ah, I get what you mean now, sorry. I'll still be singing along though
Jimbo Posted 27 July 2011 Posted 27 July 2011 Why can't people just accept the fact that, cheesy or not, when you're smiling is the club anthem and has been for many years. Why try to change the history? Having this version of the song, wrongly or rightly, gives us something to sing along to at a controlled pace and gives others a chance to join in rather than have the same handful of people singing it at warp speed every game. It's not a particularly good song, it would be even worse to have a Louis Armstrong or Frank Sinatra version playing, but it's our song and we should embrace it
