The Padster Posted 8 June 2010 Posted 8 June 2010 Beeb STEVE'S CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM OF THE SEASON: GK: Camp (Nott'm Forest) D: Rangel (Swansea) D: Williams (Swansea) D: Monk (Swansea) D: Bertrand (Reading) M: Sigurdsson (Reading) M: Adam (Blackpool) M: Whittingham (Cardiff) F: Chopra (Cardiff) F: Maynard (Bristol C) F: Hooper (S****horpe) The reason I haven't included any players from Newcastle or West Brom in my Championship selection is because their squads were so much stronger than everybody else so it was far easier to play in those teams than it was in anyone else's. You look at their squads and their budgets and they were far, far stronger. Only Nottingham Forest's squad came remotely close in terms of strengths in depth, and that was a massive advantage to their players. Out of the players I've chosen, I was particularly impressed by Garry Monk at Swansea, who did a great job at the back for them and was very under-rated. In midfield Gylfi Sigurdsson came on leaps and bounds for Reading and scored lots of goals too. And, up front, Nicky Maynard and Gary Hooper were prolific despite playing for teams that had difficult seasons. Not really a Championship team of the season in my opinion considering 7 out of 11 play for only 3 teams.
CosbehFox Posted 8 June 2010 Posted 8 June 2010 The inclusion of two players who played in a team who were relegation fodder for 60% of the season.
Bryn Posted 8 June 2010 Posted 8 June 2010 In fairness that's a strong team. Ashley Williams is better than Hobbs, might put Hobbs in over Monk and Berner over Bertrand.
Rich Fox Posted 8 June 2010 Posted 8 June 2010 It seems steve claridge has a chip on his shoulder about Leicester and seems to think the team he played in was the only decent team weve ever had. He was a great player for us but got lucky in the play offs. There are plenty of players who he has missed out who were better than him. You would think he would have put one of our players in hes a bit of a knob head.
Corky Posted 8 June 2010 Posted 8 June 2010 Agree with a lot of that, but can't understand why there are two Reading players in there from a team who only started doing well from February. We were in the top ten all season, mostly in the top seven, with a solid defence. Surely one defender should be in this team?
Dan Posted 8 June 2010 Posted 8 June 2010 Hobbs > Wlliams Hobbs > Monk And honestly, would you lot have swapped Waghorn for Hooper? Not saying Hooper's bad, but I'd honestly rather have Waghorn in our system. Sigurdsson's over-rated as well, only ever scores penalties.
JimmyB Posted 8 June 2010 Posted 8 June 2010 Hobbs > WlliamsHobbs > Monk Agree. Seems to me like Claridge picked 3 Swansea defenders solely because they as a team conceded so few goals, rather than picking them based on their individual perfomance. Having 8 or 9 men behind the ball all game, and playing so negatively, your not gonna concede many goals. Definately wasn't down to their defence being outstanding. I'd say apart from Coloccini, Hobbs must have been the most consistent CB in the league. Sigurdsson's over-rated as well, only ever scores penalties. Disagree, have to say apart from against us, he's looked a class above the rest everytime i've seen him, didnt he pretty much take them on that cup run all by himself?
Guest ttfn Posted 8 June 2010 Posted 8 June 2010 Hobbs > than any other centre back in the division. Surely?
JimmyB Posted 8 June 2010 Posted 8 June 2010 Hobbs > than any other centre back in the division. Surely? I don't remember seeing anyone else that even came close to him to be honest, should be in there, without doubt. Claridge is an awful pundit Remember him saying that Gallagher was relishing the central striker role with Fryatt out injured, the man really is an idiot!
poopbutt Posted 9 June 2010 Posted 9 June 2010 he seems to have a cob on maybe he doesn't want to be seen as biased
Ford Super Sunday Posted 9 June 2010 Posted 9 June 2010 The PFA Team of the year GK England Lee Camp Nottingham Forest DF Wales Chris Gunter Nottingham Forest DF Argentina Fabricio Coloccini Newcastle United DF Wales Ashley Williams Swansea City DF Spain Jose Enrique Newcastle United MF Scotland Graham Dorrans West Bromwich Albion MF England Peter Whittingham Cardiff City MF England Kevin Nolan Newcastle United MF Scotland Charlie Adam Blackpool FW England Andy Carroll Newcastle United FW England Michael Chopra Cardiff City I see no Leicester player in there. Maybe the PFA, and all the footballers and people associated with it have a chip on their shoulder, a cob on and something against Leicester. Must be, how dare they exclude any of our players. Seriously, why does it matter?
FoxyPV Posted 9 June 2010 Posted 9 June 2010 Hobbs for Williams is the only one I can see as the rest are pretty much spot on.
morris1234 Posted 9 June 2010 Posted 9 June 2010 this would be my selection but to be fair its been such a brilliant league this season that you could make three or four teams. GK: Camp (Nott'm Forest) D: Coleman (Blackpool) D: Williams (Swansea) D: Hobbs (Leicester) D: Enrique (Newcastle) M: Nolan (Newcastle) M: Adam (Blackpool) M: Whittingham (Cardiff) M: Dorrans (WBA) F: Maynard (Bristol C) F: Hooper (S****horpe)
The Padster Posted 9 June 2010 Author Posted 9 June 2010 Seriously, why does it matter? Ain't bothered if no Leicester players make it but it is a Claridge's was a piss poor attempt at a team of the season. How did he miss out Dorrans for example ? Who should stroll into any team of the season after his effort in the campaign.
Criggers Posted 9 June 2010 Posted 9 June 2010 I'm pretty sure this is his second team of the season anyway. He did one on the last football league show (or the last one before play offs). Pretty sure he had 4-4-2 in that as well.

Maybe you should read the quote from him in the post you started this thread with: "The reason I haven't included any players from Newcastle or West Brom in my Championship selection is because their squads were so much stronger than everybody else so it was far easier to play in those teams than it was in anyone else's. The Padster Posted 9 June 2010 Author Posted 9 June 2010 He did say he wasn't picking WBA or Newcastle players. Oooops ! Most embarrasing. Still a crap selection.
Dom_Harborough Fox Posted 9 June 2010 Posted 9 June 2010 To be fair, having watched us all year I find it hard to believe that Hobbs didn't get into Claridge's, the PFA's or anyone elses team of the year. Having said that, I think there must be a thread like this on every club's forums. Most club's fans will think their top performers should be somewhere near the team of the year because they get to watch their team week in/week out & can quickly suss out who is playing well and who isn't. While I would say Hobbs should have been in the PFA and any other team of the year, I haven't had the luxury of watching the players who actually made the team often enough to say that Hobbs had a better season than any of them.

Seriously, why does it matter? maybe because, when a person has worked hard all year and played well it's nice to see them get recognition. pretty revolutionary concept, i know.
