Patriotic pranksters spray red crosses on Leicestershire town's roundabouts

1613930.jpg he Cross of St George painted on the roundabout in Melton Road, Syston For God, for England, for St George – for turning right down Barkby Lane.

Drivers through Syston are following the red cross code after patriotic pranksters sprayed their support for Rooney and co across the town's roundabouts.

The Cross of St George has been painted over at least six roundabouts in Melton Road – and most motorists seem delighted to be taking corners for England.

"Everybody thinks it's great," said Chris Hollis, of Gamble and Hollis Butchers, in Syston.

1x1.GIF "Our customers have been talking about it. People think it's good to show a bit of a support for the lads.

"Other towns have got banners and flags on their cars. Someone here has thought a bit bigger. Good on them."

Syston got its World Cup show on the road sometime on Friday.

No-one seems to know who painted the red crosses on the white traffic islands, or exactly when they did it.

"It is intriguing how it was done," said Ken Pacey, a Charnwood borough councillor for the town.

"They just sort of appeared. How they did it on a busy road like that I don't know. It's surprising we didn't get them on CCTV."

The novel display of support is being cheered by almost everyone in the town.

"They have made us smile," said Claire Ball, who works in Male's Hairdressers.

"All of our customers seem to be quite positive about it. Everybody seems to like them."

Barber Steve Wigg, who runs Razors, in Melton Road, reckoned his customers were just as tickled.

"I think it's great myself," he said. "It has got people talking and put smiles on faces."

Councillor Pacey has mixed feelings.

"Everybody, including my sons and daughters, has had a laugh and a smile about it," he said.

"It is a bit of fun, but perhaps people haven't thought about how much it will cost in the long run.

"At the end of the day, it is vandalism."

The white bullseyes in the middle of the raised roundabouts are there for a reason, added Coun Pacey.

"Drivers need to be able to see them, so they can slow down.

"It's going to cost us a lot of money to put them right."

"They will need to get a lorry, a crew of four or five blokes, and all the kit down there," he said.

Police have also failed to see the funny side.

"We are aware that damage has been caused to roundabouts in the Charnwood area," said a spokeswoman. "These thoughtless incidents make the area look very untidy and end up costing hundreds of pounds to put right.

"If anyone knows anything about these incidents we would urge them to contact the police or Crimestoppers."

Personally I think it's a great idea and would love to seem some elsewhere. Don't see why it'd take "a lorry, a crew of four or five blokes, and all the kit down there" when it was probably done by one bloke and a spray can in the first place ?!

People have done this in Ratby every summer since 2002 I think, nobody seems that bothered about it, and a couple of red lines doesn't negate the big white blob in the road that people just drive over anyway. I'm pretty sure the police and councillor are just following official line to condemn it.

Typical council "They will need to get a lorry, a crew of four or five blokes, and all the kit down there,".

Yep one to do the work the other 4 to watch.
