UK woman arrested for holding on cricket ball

London, July 9 (IANS):

A British woman was detained at a police station for five hours after she refused to return a cricket ball and 'teach a lesson' to the neighbour's kids who had damaged her car.

Lorretta Cole, 47, wanted to teach her neighbour's children a lesson after the ball repeatedly landed on her property and even damaged her car. She retrieved the ball from in front of her home in Baddesley Close, Hampshire, and refused to give it back when asked by the father of the children, the Telegraph reported.

Cole was then persuaded by police, on three occasions, to return the ball. When she refused, police detained and interviewed her at Lyndhurst police station.

Cole later said that at the police station she was detained for five hours while they questioned her, clicked her photographs and took DNA swabs and fingerprints. She was later released on bail.

"I couldn't believe it. I asked the police if I give the ball back, could I be given a reassurance that they speak to the parents. I wasn't given an assurance and it was left at that," Cole told the Southern Daily Echo newspaper.

A police spokesperson said police officers visited Cole three times to get the ball returned but on each occasion she was "obstructive" and refused. "The suspect was obstructive towards police and refused to return the ball."

Cole had to spend five hours at the police station because she could not arrange for a solicitor to be present, the spokesperson said, adding that the DNA swabs, fingerprints and photographs were part of police policy whenever someone is arrested.

The ball was seized by police as evidence.

I dont know who I'm more mad about the police for not telling the parents its the kids fault or the parents themselves for phoning the police.

Apparantly 3 cop cars turned up.

Beggars belief.

lol

When I was younger their used to be an old guy who lived opposite my old man's house and their was a little green in front of his house loads of balls used to fly over his hedge and if he was in we'd never get the balls back, until one night we managed to gain entrance to his shed and reclaim them.

Was she 47 0r 89?

As for being standard procedure to take fingerprints and DNA swabs no wonder we can't afford a police force!

So... a woman is arrested for keeping a ball off rowdy kids who have damaged her car and are annoying her, the parents of the kids go overboard to try and get the ball back by calling the police, the police arrest the woman, release her on bail 5 hours later and keep the ball... nobody wins.

Pathetic.

Obviously a slow crime day on the streets of Hampshire. Pathetic over-reaction from the police here, treating her like someone accused of a far worse by taking DNA swabs and fingerprints. Was forensic evidence really necessary? I despair.

Happened to me once, we hit a neighbour's garage. They called the police and THEY got an official police warning and the police man just told us to ignore them. Legend Police man.

But they complained to the council and about 3 of my mates and 2 dad's got ASBO's it was pathetic.

If three of your mates and their Dad's got ASBOs, they must previously had a stack of other offences to their name.

An ASBO is a last resort, issued by the courts, and is a legal binding document., following on from an initial voluntary agreement, that must have been broken. If you're right, and they did get one, then they are obviously all trouble making scumbags. The council must have taken them all to court, in order for them to be issued.
