LCFC v Sunderland

Thinking about Weale, it's a truism but goalkeepers look good when they've got a solid back line in front of them. Last season Weale had his weakest games at times when the back four was unsettled, and it shouldn't be a surprise that he's charging out from the goal a little too often when he doesn't have full confidence in his defensive unit - he'd presumably not met one of them until yesterday, and we've gone through quite a few defensive permutations in the pre-season games. But Weale hasn't suddenly become a poor player. Once the four in front of him are settled and confident that will leave him being able to concentrate on his own job.

Good game, worth going to IMO.

We looked better in the first half, and at times Sunderland couldnt get that ball off us, creating good moves and we should probably have gone 2-1 up before HT.

Second half was a bit flat, didnt look so dangerous, but again made chances. Not sure what to make of Weale today, looked a bit dodgy before the goals but looke like he should have done better with the second.

He was given some pretty heavy back-passes which he dealt well with.

I'm not overly worried by it, I'd rather he made mistakes now and learnt from it in the next week, but he didn't look the solid presence we've come to know.

Anyone see Bruno's massive smile when everyone started to chant. Bruno, Bruno, Bruno?

I thought it was, overall, a fairly decent performance today. We looked particularly threatening in the first half, creating numerous chances.

DJ showed some flair but felt he is getting some very strong ratings on the back of these few magic moments. A few times he tussled through players and seemed to keep the ball through luck more than anything else. He was probably our most threatening player but I thought the semi-standing ovation was a little much: did he even applaud the crowd back?

Thought the new RB had a decent game, and I was also impressed with Kennedy in the short time he was on. Not sure about Howard though. Looked a bit out of place in that team. He may well have his role at some points in the season but I expect him to be used sparingly.

Sousa says he'll need two seasons and he's not kidding on this performance.

Yes, his footballing approach offers some hope, not just of making progress towards becoming a Premiership club, but of sustaining that level should we ever get there.

But he'll not succeed with pass-and-move football if he continues to field so many ponderous, slow-thinking players who seemed to have as much ball control as blocks of concrete.

Let me cite one glaring example. DJ - by far our best player - works the space to cross from the right, delivers a perfect ball across the goal and no-one was hitting the box to apply the finishing touch. Nor even trying.

There should have been three or four people thirsting for a goalscoring freebee but they didn't show the energy or alertness.

Just like last year, this isn't a team that attacks and defends as a unit at all. It has individual compartments which are occasionally linked.

Several of our players looked less than fit for a start and what a condemnation that is with a week to go til the season starts. Cos, again, you don't play pass-and-move til you get the ball and that means closing down quickly, consistently and with a bit of tenacity. In fact our closing down was casual and our commitment to moving forward and backwards as a group disappointing.

There's some have given our defenders decent marks but I fail to see why. Berner and Morrison in particular looked so sluggish at times with Sunderland getting goal-side far too easily and on far too many occasions. Fast closing down would have prevented both their goals.

The pluses were that Sousa has clearly got his message across about passing - that much is obvious throughout the team. DJ looked by far our most dangerous strike option and Steve Howard, for all his look of being an oil-tanker on the turn, linked play quite well and so nearly scored a wonder goal with a snap shot on the turn of immense power.

At least I found the football watchable, which is heartening, but there's a long, long way to go with this squad and the need for at least four good signings, perhaps as many as six or seven.

For once I am really not sure about the point of your post...:dunno:

Sousa has barely been in the job for a month and we are still in pre-season so yes there are a few players a little bit short of match fitness, Berner in particular missed some days and yes, it showed. However there was a sharpness to our play that we rarely saw under Pearson and to me that is more than just "heartening".

As for needing new players, I think we are all aware of that, but quality players, good enough to make a real difference, do not come cheap and we really do not have the funds to bring in the half dozen or so you suggest we need.

With that in mind it appears that Sousa is at least trying to change things and get the best out of the players we do have, something that did not really happen last season. DJ, for the moment at least seems to have dumped his baggage and seems determined to give it a go, King looks like he has been unshackled and N'Guessan and Oakley in particular look revitalised.

I don't want to get carried away before the season even starts but one thing that really pleases me is the innovation and flexibility something we rarely saw last season, trying out Adams as an attacking fullback may or may not work, but at least it is being tried, for me a very positive sign.

Sure there are issues, Weale and Morrison seem way off the pace, central midfield lacks defensive steel, we have no right back and a very small squad but for the first time in some years I get the impression that these problems are being worked on and that they will be solved.

Can't wait for sarurday...:scarf: :scarf:

My over-riding point is that, not for the first time, we're a week away from the start of an important season and our preparation is nowhere near complete. Either in terms of the team itself or the way that team functions. Two months hence we could be so far off the pace the rest of the season will be academic apart from providing the chance to build properly for next season. It's like we've given ourselves a handicap.

Anyone else find that the booing of Neilson when he came on was unneccesary? He's our player ffs, not his fault he's shit.

Agree, proper daft.

Only other disappointment about yesterday was seeing a kid in a Man Ure shirt.

Can't stand that. I'd rather have a Sunderland fan in the home end than see that.

I thought we started pre-season at pretty much the same time as the rest of the sides in the Championship, if that is the case why do you think we are so far behind fitness wise? Genuine question.

I see what you are getting at regarding the team and our style of play but with a new manager, determined to change the way we play, I really can not see what else could have been done. From what I have heard and seen, it looks like we are making progress, for once I am feeling quite positive.

Money is clearly an issue and the squad is short in a number of areas, Sousa seems to be concentrating in getting the best from what we have at the moment, correctly in my view.

The start of the season will be important and it will be difficult without the 'bounce' we got from our promotion season. It will be an immediate challenge for our new manager to keep us competitive whilst continuing to change and restructure, possibly with some new players.

Still looking forward to it...:scarf::chant:

I saw a Sunderland fan in the home end, thankfully no one complained or anything which was good as it was only a friendly.

Saw a Chelsea fan too, I think anyone who wears another club badge on any clothing should be instantly thrown out or not let into the ground. Esepcially if it is a big game, or an away game in which a real Leicester fan could be missing out to some glory hunting idiot.

Maybe they were with Leicester fans. It was only a friendly, people are acting like they came in and told all Leicester fans to fook off.

Maybe they shouldnt have been there, but it was only a friendly, and it was Sunderland, not exactly Cov fans which are going to cause trouble.

So the lad from Cheltenham and his mates shouldn't have been allowed to come to our games then? I don't think you've thought this plan through.

I was really referring to a big 4 team or a Premier team, should have made that clear.
