Jackirius Posted 15 October 2010 Posted 15 October 2010 Couldn't see it posted before... http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/3180964/Sven-Goran-Eriksson-openly-questions-Fabio-Capello.html SVEN GORAN ERIKSSON last night openly questioned the way Fabio Capello manages England. The former Three Lions boss is concerned the Italian's reign is too strict, stern and aloof. Eriksson has been told how Capello sometimes blanks his players completely. And he said: "I always treated my players like men. "I would certainly never walk past a player in the corridor and not speak. Why should I do that? They have to play for you so of course I would speak to them. "If you want them to do everything they can for you, then you have to treat them with respect. "Yes, they should always know who is the boss - but they do know that. So treat them as grown-up people." Eriksson, 62, was axed as England coach in 2006 after five years in charge. The Swede, now in the hotseat at Leicester, was voted the country's best boss since Sir Alf Ramsey. There were stories of a boot-camp regime at the World Cup in South Africa. And Eriksson said: "The big question for me is - are the players happy? "Because in my mind it is all about building the right relationship with your players and creating the right atmosphere. "Is that the case with England? I don't know. "It is difficult for me to say yes or no because, to know for sure, you have to be close to the situation and I'm on the outside. "But I believe it is so important that you trust your players and believe they will trust you." Kent Posted 15 October 2010 Posted 15 October 2010 Seems to know how to keep players happy. Something it would seem Mr Sousa struggled with? Although that seems like a distant memory now.

cc_star Posted 15 October 2010 Posted 15 October 2010 Took me ages to find how to spell criticize. criticise I thought Sven blew hot & cold for England He did wonders when he came, had great qualifying campaigns and did OK in tournaments, however McClaren & Capello have showed that Sven was an absolute genius to get the group of perpetual underachievers to do as well as they did. However towards the end of Sven's reign I wasn't too chuffed, he formed a clique of players and always picked them no matter how disappointing they were, he never dropped key players in the hope of spurring them on to greater things (something Capello isn't doing with Rooney either) But I'm chuffed with Sven he's done great work at every club he's been at, looking back he did good work with England - and he's certainly done great work for us so far, all we need now is a result tomorrow. Although I'm starting to feel our collective optimism may be a bit too soon against an organised manager who knows us inside out, players who aren't as fit as our rivals, and essentially playing a team of premiership players, whom there manager will be as motivated as fook to beat us, the weight of expectation could turn to disappointment - but then again I've always been a pessimistic bastard
dandannieldanok Posted 15 October 2010 Posted 15 October 2010 Sven's spot on regarding his comments and sentiment about Capello, of course Sven didn't manage England perfectly but I'd much rather have him as England manager than the Italian Hitler we've got.............Actually scrap that now we've got Sven, no-one can have him
purpleronnie Posted 15 October 2010 Posted 15 October 2010 Its strange that when capello took over everyone (well the vast majority) thought it was exactly what we needed, a no nonesense manager who wouldn't allow the wags, late night partying which the players had be criticised previously and given as one of the reasons the england team had failed. Now we seem to have flipped that opinion on its head and we want the manger to open up and let the players have some space, it seems no matter what manager we have we still fail, maybe just maybe one day the players will be criticised for the lack of success.

It's not the fact he's strict, it's the fact he's an arrogant prick. Someone like Pearson can be stern, but ultimately he has respect for the players and the players have respect for him
Guest BlueBrett Posted 15 October 2010 Posted 15 October 2010 I'd rather have Sven manage my football team but I'd rather Capello had my back in a fight.

Someone like Pearson can be stern, but ultimately he has respect for the players and the players have respect for him I don't know enough about him to say whether he's arrogant or not, sometimes with such a little grasp of the english language I think he may find it hard to express himself as he would like. And if he is indeed arrogant then theres nothing essentially wrong with that, plenty of great managers are arrogant, and capello has had great success in his managerial career, I just think too much emphasis is put on the managers failings rather than the players.

Certainly agree that the players have gotten off too lightly for too long! I can only go on what I read (obviously) but if Capello does blank his own players then it's never going to be a great team that want to do well for each other. My point about Pearson was that although he was strict, he managed to create a great spirit in the club and our team of average players achieved so much because they all wanted to do well for each other. Somehow we need that in England

Nail on head. Most managers are good until they manage England(Abit like at Leicester!) all of a sudden they turn crap. God forbid anyone who would berate the por ikkle cherub players!!! tossers!
Matt Posted 15 October 2010 Posted 15 October 2010 I joked on Wednesday about saying Sven for England but I'd rather have him than Capello, I think it was around the time Sven went I lost my interest with the England football team, purely coincidental not just because Sven went think it was more I saw the players for what they were and then McClaren was the replacement but I honestly would say Sven has been the best manager for England over the last few certainly, that's not too hard though.
lildave3 Posted 15 October 2010 Posted 15 October 2010 Made great reading over my break at work! I'm falling in love with Svennis big style.
