Webbo Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 My soon to be 16 year old daughter will be going to six form next year but doesn't want to stay on at Wreak Valley. What's the best six form in the city or county?
Mee Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 My soon to be 16 year old daughter will be going to six form next year but doesn't want to stay on at Wreak Valley. What's the best six form in the city or county? I'm leaving Long Field in Melton this year, looking to go Loughborough College, my brother (Leicester944) is there at the moment and says he loves it. There is a massive selection out there though, so just go around the open days when they are on offer
The Doctor Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 wyggeston and queen elizabeth 1 college is pretty good IMO
Webbo Posted 21 October 2010 Author Posted 21 October 2010 Are there any sites out there that tell you when the open days are?

Mee Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 Leicester College - Thursday 25th November QE (in Leicester) - Saturday 20th November
Mee Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 The thing which i found annoying is that some college option blocks are situated awkwardly, therefore you have to go where your courses are on offer.
FoxyPV Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 How does this work? Do you not stay in school for your A levels?
Webbo Posted 21 October 2010 Author Posted 21 October 2010 How does this work? Do you not stay in school for your A levels? She could stay on at her school to do her A levels but she doesn't have a very high opinion of it.
Mee Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 How does this work? Do you not stay in school for your A levels? When you reach 16 you either chose to stay on or leave for work. Some schools go up to the age of 19, therefore meaning he/she can do their A levels. But some schools only go up to 16, meaning you have to find another college / six form to go to study your A levels.
The Doctor Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 How does this work? Do you not stay in school for your A levels? you can stay in school, or go to a specialist six form college or quit school and start working but i don't think many people actually do that now.

Are the sixth form colleges like techs (further education colleges)? Excuse the ignorance
Webbo Posted 21 October 2010 Author Posted 21 October 2010 I take it these are secondary and the others are grammar? Are the sixth form colleges like techs (further education colleges)? Excuse the ignorance There are hardly any Grammar schools in England now unless you pay for them.
Mee Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 I take it these are secondary and the others are grammar? Are the sixth form colleges like techs (further education colleges)? Excuse the ignorance My school was previously only a Year 7-9 school (11-14 i believe) but it has been extended last year meaning i could stay on and take my GCSE's. Some schools let you stay on, but some don't.
Haylz Lou Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 I had trouble finding out information through their websites but you could talk to Connexions I think there is still one in town, they have info on all the colleges and apprenticeships etc...
FoxyPV Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 Oh right - you go to either a secondary school here or a grammar and generally stay on to do your A levels in school unless you are in a secondary that doesn't do A levels then you either go to another sceondary that does, or get into a grammar. The Technical colleges are places were you can go do A levels if you get fooked out of school (or it is not the place for you) or decide to go back to education at a later date. We've no concept of sixth form colleges over here. Thanks for the info.
Alexikokopops Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 There are hardly any Grammar schools in England now unless you pay for them. I'm pretty sure Grammar schools are free, you just usually have to pass the 11+ to get in. I went to a Grammar school and it cost nowt.

Yeah, I'm at sixth form at a grammar and all I needed was the 11+. They seemed to keep it down here and cut it out further up the country.
Alexikokopops Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 Yeah, I'm at sixth form at a grammar and all I needed was the 11+. They seemed to keep it down here and cut it out further up the country. They've kept it up in Lincolnshire
Finnegan Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 I don't know how much things have changed but QE used to be streets ahead. I had a friend in school that went from QE to Cambridge to do Maths. He's a walking calculator and he got ushered straight in by his family. That said I'd imagine the best results will likely come from sending your kids wherever the mainstay of the friends are going if that's what'll make them happy. I went to Longslade and plenty of my year wound up in good universities doing good courses. The place has a shocking reputation but they've always taken pride in their sixth form results but at the end of the day I just found myself most willing to learn when I was surrounded by the people I liked. I mean that's a big part of being sixteen really isn't it?
Wymsey Posted 21 October 2010 Posted 21 October 2010 Loughborough College has good reputation of good teaching and high achievable grades. Just watch out for Mrs.Shearer from the applied business class x0.
Jimothy Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 My soon to be 16 year old daughter will be going to six form next year but doesn't want to stay on at Wreak Valley. What's the best six form in the city or county? No idea which the decent ones are now, but she's making the right choice leaving Wreake, bloody shithole.
Zingari Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 Webbo Whilst I admire your paternal concern , re your daughters education , should you not be more concerned about your own prospects of becoming an FT mod ? Surely she would understand that you are now on the very brink of elevation , and that should you achieve this , then all sorts of doors will magically open up for you. ( and , by association , to her also ) ( you never know , you could be kitting her out for Rodean this time next year ) ps Has anyone contacted you yet ? Should I arrange for a relevant someone to wake up with a horses head on the pillow ? ( it usually focusses their attention )
